Rivalry Week Applesauce
Now that crap sandwich part of this week's meal is done, we can move onto the dessert, some Subway Series candy.
Meet the Mets
More injuries! This time it's John Maine going on the DL. No official word on who will replace him in the rotation, but the Daily News mentions Fernando Nieve and Nelson Figueroa.
I think Eric pretty much summed up last night's game perfectly. James is angry that David Wright is batting 5th, robbing the Mets' best hitter of 50+ at bats. Ted Berg defends Jerry, kind of.
Remember Lance Broadway? That guy who we got for Ramon Castro? Well he walked 6 batters in 4 innings last night.
Johan Santana will not be fined by Jerry Manuel for ignoring the bunt sign. I can't believe that was even an issue.
Mets Geek analyzes Met fastballs. Some surprising results in the top end.
I guess I have to give this story a link, but I'm not happy about it. Some joker is claiming to have buried a Phillies jersey in Citi Field.
Around the NL East
Priced out of the Citi is tired of getting angry. The Phillies are just better. Phillies Nation says that they always have the will to win.
Scott Eyre has a calf injury and might be out for a while for Philadelphia.
Rob Neyer argues that the Nationals might not have to sign Stephen Strasburg. Meanwhile, the Nats actually win a game, 3-2, against the Reds, helped along by a Brandon Philips error.
Cody Ross's 8th inning error opened the door for the Cardinals to beat the Marlins 6-5.
Javier Vazquez struck out 12 Pirates over 8 innings, but Rafael Soriano gave up 2 runs in the 9th to allow the Pirates to beat the Braves, 3-1.
Around MLB
Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez has signed with the Rangers.
The Cardinals are interested in Miguel Tejada to play third base.
Whose fastball is the most effective in the bigs? Tim Wakefield. I know, who'd have thunk it?
Kate Hudson and Alex Rodriguez were set up by their real estate agent, just in case you cared.
The Rays are this year's Rockies. That and they're interested in Pedro Martinez.
Bobby Valentine's Chiba Lotte Marines scored 15 runs in one inning, beating the Hiroshima Carp 23-2.
First the Red Sox picked Carlos Beltran's cousin, now they get Carl Yastrzemski's grandson. Oh yeah, they also swept the Yankees again.
The Royals beat the Indians last night in 10 innings with the help of an injured gull.

If he wants to
Johan should be allowed to swing the bat. Heck, if he wants, Johan should be allowed to wear a cape, as long as it’s blue and orange.
yep Phillies are better
They know how to win. of course without say Howard and Utley, they wouldn’t have a chance. Bu somehow us losing Reyes and Delgado doesn’t prevent people from talking about grit as the reason we lose ballgames
In a way
They’ve been without Rollins this year but I agree.

Rollins just isn't really as good as people say, though.
Seriously, Utley’s the only player on the Phillies more valuable than Jose.

Yeah, it does seem like the Mets "core" is better
But that difference is also made up in Jayson Werth>Ryan Church and Shane Victorino>Luis Castillo.

The Mets don't have the will to win.
That’s the problem. It has nothing to do with two of their four best hitters, two of their projected starters, and two of their best three relievers all being on the DL at the same time.
How about Jerry's postgame comments:
Jerry Manuel: "I didn’t really have any other choices at that point, it was late, Robert Parnell was out… We half way escaped but the last guy was able to put a good swing on it.
Question: Were there any other options… since Takahashi has been so ineffective against lefties?
Jerry Manuel: Not from the way that we’re built, not from the way that we’re built. He had some success against them in Philadelphia. We were just trying to get by at that particular point.
Um, okie, assuming actually wasn’t available, contrary to the pregame implication, how about maybe Stokes? His arm was probably so well rested that he was throwing quadruple digits by now. I mean, seriously, did Jerry not watch Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez look like fools swinging at high fastballs the whole series? Say, you know who I think I remember throwing a pretty decent high fastball once some time: STOCKS! Ah well, at least everyone in the clubhouse has extra shiney shoes.

I thought these comments were pretty bold
specifically the “no other options from the way we’re built” passage. Sounds like a manager throwing his GM under the bus to the press. That is not, I repeat, NOT, a good idea, so long as that GM is responsible for his employment.
Agreed

Off topic
but the SB Nation Fan Shop advertisement on the front page has a Phillies jersey and a Yankees hat. Why not just kick us in our collective crotch and get it over with, SBN?
Hmn
For what I am paying my real estate agent, he ought to set me up with Kate Hudson.
