That is 3 really tough losses in a row. It is taking an awful lot of restraint to keep from suggesting panic trades.

I HATE THE INJURY EXCUSE!!!!

yes we’re injured, yes we would have more wins if Delgado and Reyes were healthy, but virtually every loss in recent memory (minus that bad outing in Pitt) have been the result of stupidity both by the players and management.

I like the injury excuse.

It keeps me from inflicting pain on others.
In all seriousness, we probably would have been up more than one run with Delgado and Reyes in the lineup. So it may not have prevented mistakes, but it may have created a larger margin for error.
Obviously not an “excuse”, though.

*Reyes gets injured

*We trade Ramon Castro for a nobody and replace him with Omir Santos (!!!!!!!!)
*We decide Murphy can’t play outfield anymore
*We may permanently have destroyed Ryan Church’s psyche.
Anything else?

I'll go a bit further

Reyes SS
Beltran CF
Wright 3B
Delgado 1B
Sheffield DH
Church RF
Castro C
Murphy LF
Orlando Hudson 2B
Derek Lowe P

I didn’t watch the game because I like to enjoy baseball and it’s really hard to enjoy this team right now. I got a slew of texts and facebook updates that told me exactly what happened, of course. And I immediately started thinking that this team could’ve had Orlando Hudson, Derek Lowe, and Ramon Castro, but instead has Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez, and Omir Santos. Why do we expect a team run by abject amateurs to actually win?

I really feel bad for David Wright and Carlos Beltran sometimes. They’d probably make a team like Milwaukee into a World Series champion, and yet they have to share lineup slots with Wilson Valdez and Omir Santos on a $147 million team.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

Honestly....

I will probably get lambasted, but to me, this is the 3rd worst loss in the last 3 days. I can deal with losing to the Yankees on a fluke play, K-Rod deserved to blow a save, going 2-0 on pretty much everybody (albeit, that was a horrible way to blow a save), falling behind 3-0 on Tex and putting the winning run on base. That is why you never intentionally put the winning run on base. The real killer is the 4 game swing with the Phillies, games that matter much more, that we basically also gave away.

It sucks, but this team just looks like losers. They find ways to give games away, and they have since 2007. They are talented and all that, and yeah yeah, I get that they are beat up and have crappy players all over, but that is all the more reason why you have to close the door when you have multiple run leads three games in a row.

It annoys me, because to us as fans things like beating up on Hamels for talking smack probably matter more then it does to the players, and we had a chance to shut Cole Hamels up, but in the game that he is pitching, they prove him right, they beat him up, and then they find a way to lose it. They are proving that Cole Hamels was right, the Mets are choke artists. Call me a WFAN propaganda spewing tool, or whatever, but all they do is continue to prove that everybody is justified in laughing at the Mets and calling them losers. They just continue to choke up big games.

Oh well. I’ll be back in front of the TV tomorrow, watching them again.

just one thing

They don’t lose because they have some inability to come up big when it counts. They lose because it’s a team with 4 superstars (one injured right now) surrounded by replacement level and sub-replacement level crap. Nothing will change until the front office (and I pray the ownership) is purged.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

by Greenpoint Ian on Jun 12, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear what you are saying...

But still, everybody keeps bringing up the injuries, or the general flaws in the team, but when it comes down to it, this team blows games late, they have ever since the end of 2007. I don’t know what the hell it is, but they just give games away that they have in their pocket. I wouldn’t get so angry if they lost because of what you said, because their team has faults and they just aren’t that good. But they keep losing games that they pretty much had secured, regardless of how bad the team is and how they got there. We keep talking about how we have all these scrubs in the lineup, which is definitely fair, but think about it. If the Mets didn’t do everything in their power to blow late game leads the last 3 days, we are sitting here right now, talking about the first place NY Mets. In 3 games that the Mets played well, they went from should have been in first place, to 4 games out, and again, I don’t know how they recover from 3 losses like these. But hey, maybe they are getting their September collapse out of the way in June. Thats all I got in terms of silver lining.

You can't really say that.

This is all selective memory, guys. It really is. You could make the argument that the Phillies never start games or seasons off well, that they always need to rely on trying to win down to the wire. This isn’t true, but it’s not really much less true than “teh Mets are teh ch0kers” attitude.

by squid92 on Jun 13, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

But how can you say they aren't chokers

when all they have done for 3 years is find ways to lose excruciating games that were in their pocket? I mean, I don’t like it any more then you do, but what else can you say? They find a way to lose the most important games they play.

God, you sound like my dad.

It’s not that you’re wrong. It’s that it’s unfair to say that when a small minority of this team is really doing everything they can, and I think it’s absoultely unwarranted to ever label an entire organization that way.

by squid92 on Jun 13, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay, I see where you are coming from

I am not insinuating Wright, Beltran, or any of the actual talent this team has assembled are chokers. Just, somehow, as a team, they find ways to lose not only winnable games, but games that they already are winning, and in excruciating fashion. I get that half the roster sucks, but if they were losing games because they were just getting their asses kicked from the get go, it would be a lot easier to handle then losing games that they stand to win, despite the craptacular roster, and finding a different and more horrifying way to do it on a seemingly nightly basis. See where I’m coming from? I’m not saying Beltran and Wright aren’t winning players, but somehow, somebody on this team just find a way to fuck something up. I know Luis isn’t very good anymore, but come on, he catches that ball 999 out of 1000 times.

What makes this worse

in my case, is that because of the way my brain is wired, the Mets can win 8 in a row, and I will still be thinking back to these games and where they could have been. It is just how I am and I hate it. Honestly, how many horrible losses can we have? Do other teams lose games like this too, maybe I just need a dose of relativity. It seems like the Mets lose more games like this then any other team, but I don’t know, maybe they don’t. I wish I could just go to sleep and wake up on like June 23rd to find out the Mets reeled of 10 in a row.

The team isn't that good.

Wright, Reyes and Beltran are. Santana is spectacular, but from the end of 2007 through 2008 those four were the team. Delgado helped obviously, but everyone else on this team was replaceable, everyone.

That's excatly what the problem is.

It’s not Wright, Beltran, or Reyes’s fault we haven’t made the playoffs the last two years. It’s that Chavez and Tatis started like half the game last year each, that Castillo is the best second basemen we can get. That our managers kept throwing out the same shitty relievers day in and day out refusing to try something new. Our catcher position is a black hole, and the biggest problem is that we could have fixed every single freakin problem. Orlando could be at second, Dunn in left, Jesus Flores catching, Lowe to compliment Santana.

It’s infuriating

What do you mean actually.....

I said he intentionally walked Tex. Even though it was an unintentional intentional walk, it is stupid to do that, putting the winning runner on base. Technically it was an IBB, but he still fell behind 3-0, and whether he just couldn’t find the zone, or he was pitching around Tex, that is bad.

Pettitte and Burnett need to be crushed, and we need good Maine to show up (oh Christ, Maine in this ballpark!)

That is why this is so devastating....

we can right now very easily be discussing the first place Mets. It sucks to lose tonight, but other then wounded pride, it really doesn’t matter. The two vs Philly (to me) were much worse. Those 2 games were a 4 game swing, we don’t even lose any ground tonight. Oh well, shit happens. We’ll get’em tomorrow. Also, not that it matters, but did anybody notice while Castillo was clearly having trouble with that pop fly that was in the air FOREVER, Ryan Church was trotting over to centerfield to celebrate with Beltran? When the ball first went up, and Luis started stumbling around, my first thought was honestly, where is Ryan Church?

There were lots of other problems in this game

Just the fact that Livan and Nieve are expected to pitch to a potent Yankee lineup is bad enough. But still, 14 Mets combined to do everything possible to win this game. This despite more tactically unsound decisions by Jerry. Proper Sean Green usage aside, wtf was with bringing Switzer into a close game with two runners on? I don’t care if Hideki’s lefty, there’s absolutely no reason not to use Stokes there. You don’t put a replacement player into a spot like that in his season debut. And almost as bad, how dare you call for an intentional ball four to the winning run. I don’t care of its 3-0 and Mark Texiera. You don’t give him a free ball there. Pitch around him, fine, but at least give him a chance to get himself out. The resulting situation, once the ball left A-Rod’s bat, was that the Mets essentially had a 99.9% chance of winning the game. But the walk meant that the 0.1% longshot was a loss, not a tie.

Luis Castillo should have his contract voided and be banned from the game of baseball.

Yeah

Its just a microcosm of everything wrong with the Mets. David Wright gets what could be a high watermark type hit for the season (at least to the NY media hounds), and its wiped away by this. This is how great players get robbed of stupid awards.

I think I just don’t care anymore. I just have no expectations for this team. There’s so much I enjoy about them, but it always gets pissed away in the end. Everything’s built on itself, and though the story isn’t written yet, the September possibilities become clearer and more well defined with each passing game. From the beginning, this looked like one of those most fragile save opps Frankie has had all season. And it goes down like that. Microcosm of what the Mets are, not because of some intrinsic character flaw, but because of what they’ve accomplished and ruined over the last two years.

Well said

Though for some reason, or maybe for no reason at all, in the middle of typing out a different post, I just smiled to myself, laughed out loud and thought, we will laugh about this when we are hoisting that trophy in October. I know there is on reason to believe such a thing is possible, but I don’t know. This is way out of character for me, as I am without a doubt a glass half empty type of individual. So either this newfound sense of optimism I am currently enjoying is a sign from up above, from the baseball gods, or I am just completely losing my fucking mind.

I usually tend to react just the way you did in your post right now Meddler, I think about what could have been, how good this team can be, how good they occasionally are, and how they always seem to blow it. Then I say fuck the Mets, I don’t care, they suck, I’m not watching anymore, I don’t care what happens.

But I do care what happens, we all do. Acting like we don’t care is just that defense mechanism that every Met fan has ingrained in them. So fuck it, I love this team, probably more then anything outside of my family (pretty sad, I know), I will root for them until the end, I have faith in them no matter how bad they play and no matter how much they hurt us, I won’t ever stop loving this team.

What doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger, and the days can’t get much darker then this. I think I just set a world record for the most cliche’s ever used in one post, so I will end it with this. I love the Mets, we will come out of this.

That's certainly true

And the perspective I try to hold myself to. Saying I don’t care was an overstatement, but saying that I have no expectations, or at least that I try not to have expectations, I still think is accurate. But I think that’s pretty much how I try to approach just about everything as often as I can. Really, the worst part of what happened today is the .gif fodder its going to create for Phillies, Yankees, and Braves fans. That’s going to be seriously annoying. Its effect on the Mets season is also negative, but not nearly as negative as it feels right now. It just hurts so much because the negative aspects of it completely wiped away so much that was positive. But, such is things, and Luis Castillo’s shitty defense isn’t indicative of anything we didn’t already know.

Thats the infuriating part.

This team is decimated with injuries, has no depth, and they need to just stay in it until they get Reyes back. We are all well aware of the horrible personnel we have seen come up to provide depth for this team. But despite all that, they still put themselves in a very good situation to win a game for the last 3 days, and they just couldn’t do it. We need these wins so friggen badly, and we had them, and gave them away. The Mets are somehow getting away with having horrible players get way too many at bats, but then they find a new way to give a game away. I just don’t even know what to say. I need to go get some weed.

Between the last 3 games, the Church missing 3rd base game, the blown 5-0 lead against the Pirates game, the walk off walk game in Philly, the brutal loss to Atlanta at home where Reyes gets left on 3rd in the 12th, man, this is brutal.

You gotta fuckin believe baby

whoops...

meant that as a reply to Meddlers post up above…. way up above…. but seriously guys, imagine how the Sawx must have felt on October 16, 2004. And then imagine how they must have felt when they took that bitch down. We have to stick behind this team, we have to believe, because honestly, what else is there? I love this team so much and if I give up on them now, even for a day or a week, I will feel all dirty and cheap when they finally win one(in my life time, wasn’t around in 86). They need us now more then ever!

Rec'd

The Red Sox’s 2004 season brought me back into baseball after such bad, bad years for the Mets. You just can never give up in anything.

All we need is a big stolen base…we could be versing Mariano in this series so…
you never know. And “ya gotta believe.”

Thank you

And again, this team is actually playing some inspired baseball. They keep finding ways to lose, but I felt they really played well the last 4 games. It just sucks that they have really nothing to show for it. But you know what, Beltran and Wright are turning into the leaders we have been seeking, Reyes will be back, we will somehow shore up the rotation, and make a run at this thing. The last two years at this time Phillies fans were ready to give up on everything. Lets band together and enjoy the Mets make a run at this thing. Like I said, we win the last 3 winnable games and we are alone in first. So lets keep our fingers crossed for health, and just see what happens. If we can bring in a couple of rentals like Bedard and Nick Johnson, lets do it up. If the Mets are smart, they can recoup what they lose by getting some draft picks for these guys next year. If we can get something done for these two without losing Fernando, Flores, Holt, Mejia or Havens, I would be okay with it. We just need to deepen this lineup just a tad. We may not even need a pitcher, depending on how Maine and Perez come back. I just enjoy this hopeful feeling, regardless of whether it is appropriate. Lots of baseball left boys, lots of baseball left.

David Wright

has stepped up in every way, and you can see it in the field. Sure, the team has been missing Delgado. But Wright’s elevated his own play and his leadership. And this team has been playing fine baseball—the past 3 games have been so close, and so evenly matched. All of the wins by the Phillies always seem like they just squeaked by.

Aren’t we due for some good breaks? It’s about time for the law of averages to kick in.

Yes he has stepped it up

But I don’t know if we’re due for some breaks. Sounds like the gambler’s fallacy to me. And that’s the problem. We’ve seen this every year. David Wright had as good a month of baseball as a player can have in September 2007, and it was too little too late. Beltran, similar in 2008. Delgado did it for half a season. There’s obviously plenty of time left, but suffering a loss after having a 99.9% chance of collecting a win after the ball left A-Rod’s bat, that’s just more to make up for later. And the odds don’t tell you it will even out, just that all the possibilities that existed in the game yesterday are the same possibilities that exist in the game today. No more or less likely than they were before.

I think I’m almost going to feel worse if the Mets lose by one game again this year even if they never even take a lead in September. This team has played some really inspired baseball, this much is true, but some of the worst parts of this year are just such huge kicks in the pants. Just these brutal ironies that beg for narrative driven hype. I can’t deal with reading that crap again.

There are no words

and I still can’t get over how the Yankees actually dog piled A-Rod as someone said in the thread

The worst part of this recap

Is the stupid Fangraph, that just makes everything worse. I know terms like “heart” and “clutch” are overused but I’d really like someone to come out of the blue tomorrow and carry the team to a win on his back before Johan’s start

Some quick thoughts on Sunk Cost as I lay in my own vomit

Castillo: I’ve always hated him with a passion, since the very first week of the trade. I knew he was a slap hitter that never drove in runs, or hit extra base hits, and his range was diminishing. And I liked Easley. Now I just feel bad for him and pity him. It’s Minaya’s fault for signing him to the ludicrous contract when no one else even wanted him. It is weighing this team down like an anchor. It’s gotten to the point where he is a Sunk Cost. He cannot be their starter next year, and should really just be cut. There is no way around it. The Tigers ate 14 mil on Sheff, we can’t eat 12? Bring up Reese Havens and throw him in the fire, who cares at this point.

Manuel: You have to remove Livan sooner than that. The Yankees were peppering that warning track and almost had about 19 homers off of him. Every flyball hit I was afraid to look. It’s an indictment of the park, but you have to play in that park, you cannot just throw your hands up.

Sheff: nice homer, but please understand that the inside pitch is allowed to be a strike. You cannot be this amazed by every effin’ strike on the inside corner. Here’s a tip: Back the eff up!

Wright: Just an awesome clutch hit. It really does seem like he and Beltran are on base every single time. The only 2 reasons to watch this team when they are on offense.

the Wilpons have no idea what "sunk cost" means

So we’ll keep getting Castillo and Schneider day after day, not because they’re good, but because they’re expensive.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

I can't stand Schneider

I know he isn’t as bad as people make him out to be (and of course, neither is Omir), but for all that is good in the world, bring up Josh Thole and give him a shot. He may be a little raw defensively, but I’m so tired of the typical Schneider 0-for.

Anyone with a sub .300 OBP is terrible

At least Schneider walks… occasionally

Meant to say something along the lines of

how Omir isn’t great shakes himself, especially off that hot streak.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
