After losing 4 out of 6 to Phillies and Yankees...

A frustrating week of baseball...  We could have easily gone 5-1.  No need to rehash the two extra inning losses and Friday's debacle.  No need to discuss today's pasting; yikes 15-0!

What does Omar have to do first?  Clearly we need help in several areas; I think first and foremost we need a power bat in the lineup to play either 1B or one of the corner OF positons.  Seems like Adam Dunn would be the best bet as he can play 1B until Delgado comes back, then go to LF or RF.  I'd like to know what the platoon of Tatis and Murphy are hitting since Delgado went down.  The power numbers we know for sure are not there.  What would we have to give up for Dunn?  Who else could we realistically go after to fill this need?

Absent Omar making any moves, I'd like to see Murphy play 1B everyday, and leave Tatis on the bench.  Tatis was a nice story last year -- this year not so much.  Seems like Murphy needs to play everyday.

Regarding the outfield, I don't know...  Sheffield looks tired and can't play everyday, and I don't think Church is the answer longterm.  That leaves F-Mart, who clearly should play everyday if he's going stay in the bigs, otherwise he should go back to AAA.  Not a lot of great options...

Any thoughts?

Heh, we could have signed Adam Dunn, Derek Lowe/AJ Burnett, etc. in the offseason...

and it makes me really, really angry. Omar should be held accountable, and he won’t be.

not really

we maxed out our budget.

we should have signed someone else instead of oliver perez, but it’s tiring to hear the constant whining over how we should have signed x, y and z free agents when doing so would never have been feasible.

Well, actually...

that’s exactly what I’m saying. I don’t know about you, but I NEVER wanted Perez. So I lobbied first for Burnett, then for Lowe. Instead, we signed Ollie. And honestly, we would have been better off signing Dunn for that smaller amount that signing Ollie for the larger amount, even though we needed a SP more. And again, I thought all of these things BEFORE hand. When it was feasible. So…not really whining.

oliver sighting?

speaking of ollie perez, has anyone got an update on this guy? They said something about him on the broadcast yesterday and I think even Keith said he hasn’t heard anything. Not surprising that the Mets organization doesn’t keep updates on the injured but I was just wondering if anyone had a clue on what he’s doing with his life or if he’s doing anything remotley close to trying to come back?

Ollie Update

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/mets/notes.htm?csp=34

Scroll to the bottom under injury report. Most recent is Ollie throwing on flat ground on June 2nd. Take it for whatever its worth.

sure

but it’s not like we could have signed a SP AND a bat AND better backups, etc.

sigh

As much as everyone hopes Omar makes a move, and as obvious as it should be to him and the organization, does anyone really have faith that is going to happen? I am skeptical. Last summer it was so obvious we needed an arm, at least one, in the pen and Omar sat back and said all the right things to the camera and stuck with his guys, and what happend?
It’s a good thing they are facing AL teams so Sheff can give his body a little break, but hes wearing down quickly. I am a big fan of keeping Ryan Church in the lineup. He is a good outfielder with an excellent arm plus he has got some pop in the bat. He’s the kind of guy that needs to play everyday to get hot. I think it’s time for Fernando to go back to the farm. He’s clearly over matched in the bigs and he needs more time. Let him go down and play everyday and improve. This was the second game in as many days that he looked just plain silly at the plate.
Dunn would be a nice fit. He’s got that additional power that is lacking right now. But regardless the past week if you look, an extra hit, a better managerial move, and a caught pop up and the mets are 5-1 and we aren’t even talking about this. This is the Mets. I’m starting to come to terms with that. It’s always the woulda shoulda coulda with this club.

If we give up anything resembling top prospects

for Adam Dunn, who we could have had for nothing but money a few months ago, I will put a poster of Omar Minaya on my wall and ram my head into it full speed until I think my name is Ryan Church.

"not a lot of great options..."

understatement of the year.

Murphy was a nice find last year but honestly I would much rather have Tatis. I’m tired of watching Murphy blow games in the field.

F-Mart belongs in AAA. Thats just a fact, he’s only 20 years old for crying out loud. If you wanna just throw in the towel for this year then fine, keep him up. If he starts next year, we better have another slugging OF out there with him and Beltran.

Church is questionable but has been the least of our concerns. He can split RF with Sheff.

LF has been a problem for about 4 years. Just look at the turnover, Alou, Nixon, Clark, Murphy, Tatis, F-Mart, Pagan, Chavez, the freakin list goes on and on… Fail.

1B has a hole in the first half of this year and despite the second half dominance, Omar should have had a decent backup option for 1B in case Delgado reverted to last years first half form or in case of injury. He did not. Fail.

Rotation – This has been said. The Mets signed guys with “upside” Garcia and Perez. Just in case they penciled in Redding and Livan to ensure we had 5 starters. They didn’t want to sign more consistent options like Lohse and Lowe because they didn’t have the potential upside that Omar craved. Fail.

Squid is right when he says that people with a half a brain saw most of this coming. The real question is why didn’t Omar and Mr Wilpon see it coming? The answer is because they are inept. I truly believe the they mean well but lack the understanding to produce a true long term championship team. They have plenty of money to spend which ensures that the Mets will always be talked about when it comes to contending but in reality, if and when they actually make the post-season is due to luck.

Seriously, for a team like the Mets, fielding a complete team of at least major league average players should not be difficult, yet we have failed to do this for years. Same old story. Its not going to change until ownership changes or until Wilpon gets lucky and somehow hires a great GM who brings in a good coach. I’m not getting my hopes up though…

Some quibbles.
…tired of watching Murphy blow games in the field

Besides a couple memorable incidents, he was pretty good. His range was pretty decent, and it was absolutely improving. And regardless of what you think of his power potential at 1B, he has made some pretty plays there.
F-Mart does belong in AAA. It isn’t really an indisputable fact, though. I think his plate discipline is pretty encouraging, but as soon as we can determine Sheffield’s health and we play more NL games again, he should go down. Right now, our outfield SHOULD be Sheff, Beltran, Church, at least in NL games. Right now, we can’t platoon Church and Sheff.
What we SHOULD have done for LF/1B was sign Dunn or someone of his ilk. But nooooo…we went for Daniel Murphy. FUCK.
Dead on with rotation. We picked crappy guys with upside rather than guys without upside that were ALREADY good. Whywhywhy would you do that?
Honestly, the only things I didn’t see coming were…

  • The injuries to our middle infield. I can’t be THAT upset with the contingency plans for the middle infield, because I didn’t really expect Cora and Reyes to be out at the same time. But yeah, we should have had someone better than Ramon Martinez. Blahhhhh.
  • I didn’t expect our catching situation to be THIS bad. I expected Omar to leave Castro on the bench and make Schneider the starter for some reason, but not to trade Castro. Of course, once Everyday Omir started getting lots of playing time, I expected it.
  • Whatever the hell happened with the flu. I did not see that coming.
  • To a degree, the Putz problems. None of us knew the extent of his injury that seemed to have existed prior to the trade. However, I feel I might have been one of the few to think Putz was not going to be all he was cracked up to be.
Everything else, though, I think everyone expected.

isn't Delgado injured?

He had a nice season last year no? Wouldn’t that be as much a reason to nice sign Dunn? You put him in LF he’s as bad as Murphy or worse.

Except Dunn can hit.

And no one really could have expected Delgado to repeat last years performance and stay healthy.

Hmm

Murphy has made some decent plays at 1B but the OF experiment was botched. He still doesn’t hit enough for a 1B (or a LF) so unless he can play a decent 2B, he is a backup player. If the Mets had an abundance of other players who could slug, I could stand Murphy a little bit more. That is not the case.

My ultimate point (which I failed to explain) was that Omar wasn’t counting on FMart playing this year and hence he is not an excuse as to why our GM has failed to provide us with legit options in the OF.

Dunn is interesting and I’ve always liked him, however I am glad he didnt come here because I thought he would be boo’d out of town. The good on Dunn – works counts, walks alot, and has power. The bad – he strikes out a lot and has consistently failed to get sac-flys when needed. Considering Citifield is soo large his HR numbers would certainly drop. Now picture Dunn as a Met coming to the plate sometime in July. He HR total is around 15 and he’s batting .250. Do you think the average fan would look up his OBP and give him a pass for playing in CitiField and being on pace to only 30+ HRs? (considering he always hits 40)…I doubt it.

by JDizzzy on Jun 15, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

To be fair...

I’m not sure his HR count would be down too far. If you look at the success of left handed pull power hitters in Citi, they actually have been more successful hitting HRS in Citi than average.

also

I believe Dunn is one of only two guys to hit an opposite field homer at Citi (or at least was when he hit his oppo field homer two weeks ago), which is impressive/crazy.

I wonder how Piazza would have hit at Citi – he used to crush the ball the opposite way, but I wonder if he would have lost many homers in that silly little cut-out with the high fence under the Modell’s sign, b/c he hit a lot of rocket line drive home runs.
