What logic is this?

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

I have no idea

Jerry is showing no confidence in him. First by pinch hitting for him and now this.

He should have never been second to begin with

but this just shows Jerry’s lack of confidence for what ever reason, and you knew Jerry would have to go with the hot bat in Murphy.

But still, the biggest question of logic is: Why is Omir Santos in the major leagues?

David Wright is so strange. I really can’t ever remember seeing a guy more hot and cold as David has been in 2009. He goes from making the most elite pitchers in the sport look like easy work, lining base hits with ease all over the field, but then when he is going cold there is no worse hitter in the league. He has gotten into some terrible habits and every time (seemingly) that we go into a small park he starts trying to launch balls. Sometime in the last two days he got into the whole I’m going to pull everything you throw me over the LF fence approach that I hate so much. Uehara blew three 86 mph fastballs right past David, crappy located fastballs right down the middle of the plate, you would have thought it he was throwing 100. I wish somebody would just tell David he is not a home run hitter. When he starts getting that pull happy upper cut swing, he is an easy out. This isn’t meant to be a David Wright sucks rant, far from it. I just find it so curious that the kid can go 3 weeks of hitting .700 and then all the sudden he just looks absolutely lost, unable to hit mid 80’s fastballs with plate. I can’t be the only one who sees this right?

I've been seeing it for 4 years

He’s a streaky player but the hot streaks far outweight the cold streaks and that’s what makes him great. Consistency is nice, but I’ll take 8 more of him if I can get them.

by aparkermarshall on Jun 18, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

But that's not what it means

“Livan can field his position” = “Livan is a good fielder”

So why don’t you just say that he’s a good fielder? Or say something more precise like say he has good range, or that he has soft hands, or that he charges bunts well, or something like that?

I guess maybe I’m curious about the etymology of the saying more than anything else.

Yep

And they mentioned that he was likely to strike out less, but also that the average on balls put in play would certainly decrease. All in the context of what a weird season he’s having.

Man Livan is ridiculous

He gives up ropes, then he’ll get a double play, work out of a bases loaded jam by striking out their best hitter and getting lucky on a high line drive to our smallest and worst defensive infielder. He’ll nimbly field his position by snagging line drives and making aggressive put out attempts. He’ll get good hitters fooled on trick cutters and eephus pitches. Oh and he’ll give up home runs to the other team’s worst hitter.

Jerry Manuel...stop being....stupid...

by MetsGeek on Jun 18, 2009 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

The regression may be inevitable

but I think your claims are in error. His LD% is def a career low but his HR/FB was higher for several seasons in the middle of his career and is not that much higher than his career avg. Also his BABIP is in line w/career norms but perhaps should be a shade lower. The strength of his game right now is plate discipline and that seems totally sustainable.

Murph too. Need to start putting up crooked numbers.

I sense a big second half. Bye bye Phils.

Not to be a negative Nancy but

not sure how much more of this I can take. I’ve always been a die hard but i’m losing patience. I’m tired of using the injuries as excuses. Good teams find ways around injuries and don’t give away games that they’ve set themselves up to win. There’s been a rotting stink embedded in this team for 2+ years and I don’t see things changing anytime soon.

Good teams do overcome injuries

but not to this many players. The majority of the “big-name” players on this team have missed time. And frankly, Delgado is the linchpin of the lineup. I do think this team was poorly assembled in that there’s no sufficient depth, but these injuries have been ridiculous. That being said, there are a good handful of games that were winnable this year that got away. And Frank’s been perfect until tonight. There was no getting around tonight.

agreed-I can live with the fact that our starting pitching is thin, or set up guys are shaky, or even that we are missing a big power bat

but they’ve thrown too many games in the trash that this current 25 man roster was in a position to win. They’re not taking this division this year, that is for sure. The Phillies had a rare hiccup this week and the Mets got a whole stinking game on them.

by Rigsay on Jun 18, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The standings aren't what I worry about

I haven't had a problem with Redding as most have

he’s been what you’d expect: 5th starter like. He was solid against LA, Wash and Philly, ok against Baltimore and pretty bad against Boston and Florida. If we had a normal 1,2,3, and 4 starter he’d be just fine

by Rigsay on Jun 18, 2009 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering we don't

I’d rather give someone else a shot. But if we did have the normal rotation, I’d still rather see Niese, Nieve, or Figgy as the 5.

by Preach19 on Jun 18, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

For what it's worth

tRA+ of Mets starters:
Johan – 127
Redding – 98
Livan – 89
Ollie – 87
Pelf – 85
Maine – 72

I’m not implying that Redding is an All-Star, but he’s been better than the ERA suggests. The hate directed his way is unwarranted, thus far.

by James Kannengieser on Jun 18, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Nieve is intriguing

In the minors he’s had a K/9 of about 8, BB/9 of 3.5 and his GB/FB is close to 1. Looks like he’s been a little lucky throughout his career with his HR/FB rate of about 8.5%.

Walks killed him in 2006 with Houston in his only meaningful big league stint. If he’s able to pitch reasonably close to his minor league peripherals, there’s no reason why he can’t be at useful pitcher for this team.

by All Shook Down on Jun 18, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe this is off the subject, but

I gotta ask, what’s with people posting “at least the Yankees lost.” Who cares what they did? I don’t understand the Yankee obsession. I could care less. The Yanks can win 128 games or lose 140. I’m only concerned about the Mets and to a lesser degree the Phils and the other wild card teams like the Cards.

It’s that same mentality that has Met fans chanting “Yankees Suck” during a Mets-Pirates game. Seriously, please quit obsessing about that. It just reveals an inferiority complex.

by David G on Jun 19, 2009 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

To those that find Redding "acceptable" or "adequate" in any way...

Do you also own a vinatage Brian Lawrence ’07 jersey? Redding is Brian Lawrence reincarnate. Costing the team crucial games with brutal performance after brutal performance, masked by 1 slightly decent performance.

The bar is so low for Redding, a dwarf (it’s late, cannot think of anything smaller or more amusing than a dwarf for this metaphor…Ryan Seacrest?) could not limbo under it.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
