Tired Bullpen Applesauce: Mets' rough June, Beltran MRI, the Satchel Paige/Cy Young Award
So, is it time to reevaluate Bobby Parnell's trading value? Will the Nationals be scared away by the young right hander's latest meltdown? I kinda wish that the Mets would just meet Jerry Manuel's low expectations one of these days.
Meet the Mets
Mike Pelfrey has already decided to name his first born son Chase. Maybe Chase "Utley" Pelfrey will become the first great Met second baseman in 20 years.
Slightly old news, but, Fernando Martinez is down, Nick Evans is up.
Bobby Parnell and Sean Green faced a total of 7 batters yesterday, and got 0 outs.
The Mets, who were 19-9 in May, are now 6-12 in June.
In more good news, Carlos Beltran is worried about today's MRI.
Grission has expanded its web presence.
Hot Foot encourages us to keep up hope.
Tom Seaver sat down with teammate Pete Rose a long time ago.
Around the NL East
The Marlins placed workhorse reliever Kiko Calero on the DL.
The Yankees have formally protested the results of yesterday's loss to the Marlins due to a lineup discrepancy.
Ryan Howard was hospitalized with the flu, ending his games played streak at 343.
Paul Hagen says Rollins is the Philly engine.
Turner Field might continue to be hostile ground for the Braves in the next few series.
Marlin pitcher Scott Proctor comes clean about his alcoholism.
Around MLB
Albert Pujols homered twice and collected 6 RBI to help Tony LaRussa win his 2,500th game.
In civil rights news, Hank Aaron is disheartened about the lack of blacks in baseball, Gordon Edes says the Cy Young Award should be the Satchel Paige award, and Mike Silva asks why bother?
Joe Mauer is good. Magglio, not so much anymore.
Teams have started more rookie pitchers this year than ever before. What gives?
Harold Reynolds doesn't like numbers. Joe Posnanski lovingly chides.
In the Weaver vs. Weaver matchup, older brother Jeff wins out.
Brandon Webb might require a pretty intensive surgery on his shoulder.
Endy Chavez is out for the remainder of this season after colliding with infielder Yuniesky Betancourt.
Alex Rodriguez's date with Kate Hudson could have been responsibile for his late appearance at the ballpark over the weekend.
Dusty Baker shouts "WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"
The Moneyball film just hit a major speed bump.
Barry Zito almost no hits the Rangers.

sucks for endy
i think we can all appreciate from a fan perspective how omuch it sucks to have outfielders running into each other (and into the infielders).
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

Are you suggesting, perhaps
that June is gut check time?

Interesting article by Silva
I agree that renaming the CYA the Satchel Paige Award would be pointless. But the Howard/Kobe comparison is ridiculous. Kobe is more famous than Ryan Howard because he’s been one of the most dominant players in his sport for 10 years, winning four championships playing in America’s second-biggest media market. Ryan Howard is a good player who hits tons of homers in a tiny ballpark. I’m not sure that the way he’s marketed has that much to do with it.
Really, Jerry?

Please god
Let the Moneyball film die. Just let it die. Everyone falls into one of the three following camps:
A) Read the book, loved it and have no interest in seeing a movie
B) Read the book, hated it and have no interest in seeing the movie
C) Didn’t read the book and instinctively hate it and have no interest in seeing the movie
Please let us move on.

I disagree
I’m in the “Read the book, loved it, and want to see the movie” camp. I just want more Moneyball!
Jerry Manuel...stop being....stupid...

Really, why exactly?
Just curious. It looked like a giant turd of an idea to me.

Can you explain why you want to see the movie
besides the wanting more Moneyball? Personally, I don’t care about the movie so it really doesn’t matter to me if it’s created or not. I will youtube the scene that depicts Omar as a clueless trade partner but I’m not really compelled to watch the scene where Jeremy Brown retires from baseball at the age of 28 possibly because of the amount of pressure Lewis’ book put on him. I’m also going to go out on a limb and say that Hollywood might, for the first time ever, make a movie that doesn’t do the book justice.

I just don't see
Where this would make a good movie. What is the plot? How does it end? With The A’s losing in the playoffs again?

i would not be in any of those camps
i thought the book was dope and would defintiley see a soderberg adaptation of it, just to see what kind of movie you get with a book like that. plus why would you care if they make it or not if you dont plan on seeing it anyway? tons of crappy movies get made that i dont care about and will never see, but that doesnt bother me. why would it?
also dont get how any baseball fan cant be at least curious to see what kind of movie gets made. its not like you have to do anything. the movie people will do all ther work. at most you’ll have to see for like 2 hours in front of a screen. thats not to strenuous, i can handle that.
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

The book is brilliant
It’s an era-defining piece of literature in my opinion. Its impact on the sport has been massive and Lewis’ writing is as perfect as I’ve ever read. I’ve read the book at least five times over the last five years.
For those reasons, I can’t see how a movie could possibly do justice to the text. The book is essentially a business case study. How could a fictional adaptation of that be an entertaining movie?

Sorry, I'm slipping into hyperbole
I mean that Lewis is as technically perfect a writer as I’ve read. That comment refers to his whole body of work: Liar’s Poker, New New Thing, Losers, The Blind Side, etc., not just Moneyball.

OH OH OH
Davidoff wins:
I suggested to Manuel that for all of his desire to get Parnell back in there, it would’ve behooved him to try the youngster in a lower-leverage situation.
“You’re exactly right,” he said. “For me, it wasn’t the eighth, it was the seventh. He had a one-run lead. Bottom of the order.”
Actually, I meant more like “up eight runs” or, more probable, “down eight runs,” rather than the seventh instead of the eighth.
Repeat after me, class: Jerry Manuel does not understand the concept of “leverage”.
