Mets Roster-Palooza
Per Ed Coleman's Twitter feed (?) and MetsBlog's pregame report, roster changes are a-brewin' at Citi Field tonight.
- Carlos Beltran will be placed on the disabled list with a "bone bruise on his right knee"
- Fernando Martinez will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Beltran's spot
- LHP Ken Takahashi has been sent back to Triple-A Buffalo
- RHP Elmer Dessens has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo
- LHP Patrick Misch has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo
- INF Wilson Valdez has been designated for assignment
With all that as the backdrop, here is tonight's impossibly bad Mets starting lineup:
- Alex Cora, SS
- Daniel Murphy, 1B
- David Wright, 3B
- Fernando Tatis, LF
- Ryan Church, RF
- Omir Santos, C
- Jeremy Reed, CF
- Luis Castillo, 2B
- Tim Redding, P

Are the mets now carrying 13 pitchers?
Omar saw that the Cardinals are doing it? Tony LaRussa’s a genius? What is going on. Pelfrey had an RBI yesterday, he’s the new RH bat of the bench.

actually,
with Jerry overusing the bullpen, it does make sense to carry an extra arm — provided it is actually used

Cerrone claims Stacks is the 8th inning guy tonight.
Anyone want to wager Jerry decides to let Frankie get a 6 out save tonight?

I'm over Derek Lowe
solely b/c at this point, I think there’s a 0% chance he wouldn’t have landed on the DL. I think the Mets could clone Cal Ripken Jr. and Lou Gehrig and figure out a way to get both of them on the DL at the same time.

They need some grission
Maybe if they all start following Livan’s training plan, they will stay healthy.
Grission and Husart - that is either the non-union Mexican equivelant of "Starsky and Hutch" or the key to winning the World Series.

For what its worth
Will Carroll today implied that it was in fact Jose Reyes who was fibbing about his status, and that Omar had given the accurate info so maybe this is a further indication of good news on that front?

That is a Ghastly Lineup
I think Schneid should be playing and hitting cleanup! Doesn’t Jerry love to ride the hot hand? That’s his thing!
I see that lineup and I think of that famous Seinfeld scene where Kramer’s been smoking all night and says “Look away Jerry, I’m hideous!”
There seems to be a an empty roster spot if Oil Spill was designated. Who’s filling that last spot.

This is unreal. Maybe ticket prices will go down with the lineup they are putting out there.
Not like this matters but is Elmer Dessens still a starter?

by ljshorty89 on Jun 22, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gary Sheffield came up a SS
Fernando is not good enough to play CF in the major leagues. The scouting reports and the Total Zone numbers support my claim.
by All Shook Down on Jun 22, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand that he won’t be a gold glover, but F! is more than capable of playing a decent CF. I’ve seen him play CF in AAA, and I’ve seen him in ST, the guy has enough range to play CF, has a good glove and a good arm, and while he’ll have to adjust to the new position in Citi, I think he’d do fine given the opportunity.
Plus, F! will have to play anyway, they wouldn’t have brought him back up if he wasn’t going to start.
by ljshorty89 on Jun 23, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, to be fair
Reed’s supposed to play decent defense in CF, right? and his bat plays better there than in a corner.
of course, he’s no Voltron.

De Rosa
Plays 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF. Respectable defensively and a really good bat. The cost is something equal to or greater than 2 draft picks (he’ll probably be a Type A free agent). I honestly think he’s a logical part of the solution. Mets offer him arbitration after the season and either reap the draft picks or he accepts. Another year of Mark De Rosa would not be an altogether bad thing.
by MickS on Jun 22, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
DeRosa would be fine
He wouldn’t do much to solve the poor defense, and I bet someone pays more than the value of two draft picks. If I ever hear Jenrry Mejia’s name connected to him again, I might start shopping around for automatic weapons.

Can he play all those positions at once?
That would help.
Seriously, the more holes you have, the less you need a utility guy, whether he’s a good utility guy or not. If the Mets are about to try to fill those holes through a trade (which I don’t necessarily think is a good idea!) they should be targeting the best available hitters who can play corner outfield, 1B, or (only secondarily) middle infield, not a decent hitter who can field all those positions.

I can only wonder if Dub will try to carry the burden all by himself

He does sound that kind of person, who tries to do too much (and end up in a slump, that’s not even taking into account his BABIP regression).

Besides Voltron going to the DL
why would we release Wily Mo and Javier Valentin? Should we be expecting a trade of some sorts soon. I actually enjoyed Valdez kinda sorta.

I’d rather see him try to drive in Cora/Murphy/Castillo/F-Mart in those first innings than Tatis.
I was really excited for Tatis this year but he just doesn’t have it.

Via Cerrone:
Brian Stokes will likely be used as tonight’s the eighth-inning guy, as he looks to get Bobby Parnell and Sean Green some rest, Manuel said.

Another positive is Takahashi and Valdez are gone. We really rushed those youngsters up! Let’s put them back in the minor league stew and let that upside potential marinate.

DeRosa is an average player who really won’t help us defensively. Nick Johnson would be great for us if we were in the AL.
The Mets have actually been good offensively in runs per game. These injuries are real tough but considering we’ve had them all year and are only 2 games out of first let’s all breathe a little bit. Let’s ride the boat until the all-star break and see where we are at.
The farm system is not in shambles. I’m really impressed with how far it has come along the past year or so. Omar has also been good with the low-risk high-reward type signing (Sheffield, Tatis, Livan, Nieve (so far), Dessens (dominated Triple A). I really don’t think you can blame Minaya on the state of the Mets. It’s just bad luck. I’ve been thru it for 20 years now.. but I’m still a Met fan.
The only thing I want to see done is release Redding..or at least move him to long-man duties..if Nieve keeps it up give him that 5th spot. Maine/Perez will be back soon. I’ve been wanting Pedro since October and still have a want for him in a Mets uniform but depth in the starting rotation really isn’t an issue if we could just get the guys on the mound.
by RIPShea on Jun 22, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I don't really have TOO much criticism for Omar here
In past years the guys we’ve seen going on the DL were players who we all knew were going to get hurt… Alou, Pedro, Cliffy. Was he really supposed to see it coming that a bunch of younger guys with no serious injury history were all going to get hurt this year?
by JoshNY on Jun 22, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Heres why I think you're wrong
Omar went into the season with the following:
1. Delgado at 1B where we knew he would be a risk given his first half of last year and his age.
2. Castillo as 2B where his knees are something you wouldn’t want to rely on for 150 games
3. Church in RF coming off major concussion issues. He has really only strung together one good half in his career and that was before the injury.
4. A platoon of Murphy (who has no power) and Tatis (lightening in a bottle twice?) in LF
5. A toss up at the 5th SP spot. (Granted Santana and Pelfrey seemed to be safe however Maine was coming off surgery and dont forget how many innings Pelf threw last year. Ollie is always risky. Now it seems to me that if we had these risks in our rotation we should have signed a guy who is solid, ie Lohse or Lowe, for our 5th spot, but we didn’t. Fast forward to the current and what happened? Redding had to take Ollie’s spot and its been a merry go round trying to fill in spot starts for our other SP injuries.
Now here is my ultimate point. The risks above aren’t as bad as they have been in 2007 and 2008, however considering that Omar has $150 million to spend, you’re telling me you can’t field a complete team with that much money. That our GM has failed to put together a solid roster for 3 years. The injuries this year are worse than average but when you look at the last three years, you should have expected this possibility given the age history of the guys Omar’s brought in. He is all about signing a bunch of injured guys/veterans thinking about their “upside” rather than first putting together a roster of solid everyday players. We don’t need a superstar at every position but we should have at least MLB average at every position.
by JDizzzy on Jun 22, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with much of what you're saying
Though don’t take too much stock into Dessens. He is a fringe major league pitcher and the epitome of a fungible bullpen arm. Also, Redding hasn’t been too bad. This team would be able to withstand his uneven performance if, you know, they actually had a representative team on the field.
by All Shook Down on Jun 22, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thing with Redding is
He shouldn’t have even been signed in the first place. So what he won 10 games for the Nats last year. His numbers all across the board were below-average. I just never saw the point in him. Elmer Dessens should be a decent bullpen guy for the time being. We will see.
