Tatis still 4th, geez

If Wright gets on first, look for the immediate steal, or the hit and run. At least I hope.

Another day off for Sheff, too.

Also, what’s up with no Schneid again? Low ball hitter vs. low ball pitcher, I like that matchup (at least, as much as you can like any Scheid matchup).

by David G on Jun 23, 2009 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

Jerry Plays the hot hand

at least when that hot hand is Santos. Haven’t seen him do it for any other player.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jun 23, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Except

Santos hit a HR on the 13th and was 2-for-5 w/3 RBI. Then he didn’t play again til the 18th. I don’t think there’s any rhyme or reason to Jerry’s lineups. He picks the team out of a hat.

by Zwill on Jun 23, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

But Schneid is Hot too, and with power

Isn’t 2 HRs, 5 RBIs in 2 straight starts kind of hot? It’s a Good problem I guess. But I still miss Castro.

by David G on Jun 23, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes my point exactly

Schneider looked good his last few outings and now he’s back on the bench. No rhyme/reason.

by Zwill on Jun 23, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

the hot guy

Jerry loves to play whoever is hot. Santos is batting .414 in the last 2 weeks and he’s coming off a 4 hit game, so that’d be my guess.

Same lineup as last night excluding Fernando and they got 14 hits.

I have no issues with it tonight.

"I told him the next time he does that, I’m going to get my blade out and cut him, right on the field. Hey, I’m a gangsta now. You go gangsta on me, I’m gonna have to get you now."

If Wright gets on first . . .

With anything less than three outs, shout out to centerpede, look for Tatis to immediately inexplicably bunt.

by Delgado on Jun 23, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

The only thing I can think is that maybe

Sheff was in the lineup and Jerry had to change it and didnt want to move everyone else around.

by mets81 on Jun 23, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't Church play CF?

Or are we worried that he could potentially collide with 2nd, short, left and right? Maybe he should stay in RF.

by David G on Jun 23, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Its funny

you still have to divide that number by 2 to get to the Marlins’ payroll

2 whole players signed through 2010. Am I the only one who finds that repugnant. They have been hiding money for years down there.

by aparkermarshall on Jun 23, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Uggla is overrated

They should have traded him last off-season at the peak of his value. Coghlan will probably be a better player than him pretty soon.

Also, how much does Tatis have to suck to get dropped out of the cleanup spot? Jerry is becoming more like Willie with sticking with “his guys” it seems.

by JoshNY on Jun 23, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

what we need

is for everyone to shorten their swing to be more like Omir.

I live in LA and went back home for the Open and 2 Mets games. Did not see a shot swung at Bethpage on Thursday and sat through a nice rain delay. I actually enjoy rain since it’s so rare out here, but wtf. The people of Queens will be floating down the streets in cardboard boxes soon. think Anderson Cooper is on his way to report from Citi.

Keith would definitely gizz on a hit and run question

I want him to show us a relay throw again.

I do wish they would hit and run a little more, but I gather from posts I’ve seen here, most of you don’t like the play. Why?

by David G on Jun 23, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

I like the Hit and Run

Puts pressure on the pitcher/defense. In my opinion that’s good agression on the basepaths.

This

Yeah I’m don’t disfavor it per se, but I think Keith, in particular, is a little bit over the top in looking for the hit and run. It has a time and place, but not all the time.

I know the cliche

But Castillo did have surgery before the season and I’m assuming he wasn’t able to workout with scooped knees so he got fat and couldn’t get into shape in time especially since he kept on hurting himself. In those 16 PAs, he has made 16 outs, 13 by strikeout.
This is absurdly awful for a hitter with his approach.
I would actually suspect that Wright has junked the ’roids, except that he was a similar hitter in 2005, before LoDuca was on the team.

Amazingly, David Wright is a .675 OPS hitter after an 0-2 count

There is no sOPS for career stats, but that means that if Wright spots the pitcher 2 strikes, he’s comparable to Luis Castillo.

His best year in this regard was 2006, where after an 0-2 count, Wright batted .310/.330/.530 for an unholy 247 sOPS

It could be worse

it could be a perfect game.

Honestly, with Beltran on the DL, I"m expecting a lot more performances like tonight than like last night

Yeah, right now it's about treading water and trying to hold on...

this just isn’t a serious ML lineup.

Yep

I consider last night to be the exception.

We should have beaned Piniero in the head the last inning

when we had the chance. Another missed opportunity.

that Dave Duncan is some kind of weird super-genius who also has a deal with the devil

Look like the strike zone's been pretty wide tonight

and that’s what a sinkerballer needs; for guys to HAVE to swing at that low pitch.

and then the Mets stopped taking those pitches and just kept hammering them into the ground.

Ugh we are going to have to watch this team for at least another month

by which time several miracles would have to happen to get regulars back and playing at a productive level, or the Mets will be so far out of contention it won’t matter.

I'm surprised that's only our 3rd shutout of the year

meh. when a guy is on his game like that i don’t know that we beat piniero even at full strength with the control he had tonight. as steve stone once said, “if I’m spotting my pitches the batter is irrelevant.”

i think the “true” output even for this crappy lineup is somewhere between last night’s 4 for 4 from santos and the collective vomit-fest that was tonight. the shame is wasting a reasonably good outing for Livan.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
