Ground Ball Applesauce - Mets can't get the ball past infield, Brad Lidge coming back, and 104 mph

The glow from Monday's gritty win sure didn't last long, did it? Yikes. If there's something to be taken from this game, it's Livan Hernandez. Not sure how long he can float on this cloud, but he did strike out Albert Pujols. I could have sworn that Pujols was going to hit 900 ft worth of home runs last night.

Meet the Mets

SNY's website featured some good articles discussing the implication of Carlos Beltran's trip to the DL. Here's Ted Berg's. And Dan Graziano's.

By the way, the current Met 25-man roster has a salary of $60 million.

Should we expect to see Brad Holt in the bullpen this year?

Anyone go to Baracklyn Cyclones night?

Ken Davidoff warns against trading away the farm for this year.

Fresh off his car accident, Jose Reyes took some fielding practice last night at Citi Field.

The boy who was hit by a stray bullet in Brooklyn threw out the first pitch last night.

Joel Pineiro has not helped the Met cause lately. But, he's still not Superman.

Mack's Mets takes a look at former Mets playing in Japan.

Aren't we glad that David Wright is still here?

FlipFlopFlyin shows the rise and fall of the 1986 Mets in graphic form.

Around the NL East

The Rays continue to not help the Mets, getting dominated by the Phillies 10-1 last night. David Price was bad.

Philly closer Brad Lidge is close to returning to the big league squad.

A record crowd turned out in DC to see the Red Sox beat the Nationals 11-3.

Ken Rosenthal previews the Boras-Nationals discussions over Stephen Strasburg.

Tommy Hanson continues his strong run, shutting out the Yankees over 5 and a third and getting the win in Atlanta's 4-0 victory.

Jorge Cantu wins it for the Marlins with a 12th inning walk off single against the Orioles. Matt Lindstrom blew the save in the 9th after Andrew Miller was effective in his start.

Around MLB

Yankee officials are nervously watching CC Sabathia's throwing session today.

So much for Magglio Ordonez's benching.

Scott Kazmir is looking strong for AAA Durham.

Joel Zumaya threw a 104 mph fastball past Milton Bradley. Hmmm....

Luis Ayala apparently asked for a trade before getting sent down to the minors. Meanwhile, in the bigs, Carlos Gomez had 3 hits in the Twins' 7-3 victory over the Brewers.

Coco Crisp is done for the year. Also, in injury news, Jason Isringhausen underwent Tommy John surgery.

What I wouldn't give for a pitcher named Outman on the Mets.

HOLLA ATCHA BOI

Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

claiming Jerry Manuel is the smartest or one of the smartest managers in baseball

You didnt think that was snark?

I figured the “if not the smartest than one of them” was a touch of sarcasm.

The piece about Holt

prompted me to go look at O’Day’s Numbers. That move looked bad when the Mets did it, now it looks horrible.

by mets81 on Jun 24, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

O' Day was giving up inherited runners every time in, thus not affecting his ERA

however, I thought pitching him 3 days in a row right when his friend Adenhardt died wasn’t the smartet move, but then again, we never said Jerry or Omar were rocket-surgeons

My problem was more that

they had this guy who was out of options, that they clearly liked at somepoint, and the let him go for 1 Nelson Figueroa start. Even though Parnell was pitching lights out at the time, if Figueroa was only going to come up for the 1 day (which he clearly was since he pitched pretty well that day), why not send Parnell down and then wait until he’s able to come back (I think theres a couple day waiting period, but dont remember – F! was down and back in 3 days). At the time they gave up on O’Day and could’ve lost Figueroa.

It was bad roster management then and looks worse now that O’Day has been pretty good for the Rangers.

According to Gameday

Zumaya’s fastest pitch was 102.7 mph. not 104 but still very impressive. Derrek Lee singled on a 101.5 mph pitch on the inside corner and lined it to left. That is impressive as well.

Mejia

I thought this would be about something I saw at minorleagueball. Someone said Mejia touched 100 mph. They said the Binghamton gun said 102 but it is 2 mph off. And someone posted “wow, so maybe he hit 104 mph.” sarcasm was suspected.

Flip Flop Flyin' is a great site

Love how Jesse Orosco is the only guy who reaches both ends of the graph.

Also, another good article by Ken Davidoff, who even manages to include a line mocking the incessant need to discuss “grit”.

Davonte Kelly

seems like a cool kid to me. I’m really glad he’s a Mets fan and David Wright seems like he’s really good with kids.

:-(

I’ve pretty much hated Sheffield his whole career, but the last few months he’s really endeared himself to me, to the point that I’m gonna be disappointed when he hangs them up. He’s been one of the few guys I’ve really enjoyed watching this season
