Having Santos play three of four games in this series is so asinine

and where is Murphy? How about Evans in LF instead of humandp?

by twon8 on Jun 25, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

Yup

That was my immediate reaction. Evans, Murph and Scheid should be in. Sit Tatis and Santos. Plus, we will lose out on shots of Schneid’s wife. I’m guessing Santos does not have a hottie in his stable.

Off to the bar in a bit to watch this one

I am on my last two days of work and, well, I guess it doesn’t matter now if I disappear to watch the game for a couple of hours.

Let’s get Johan back in the win column!

The 2009 Amazin' Avenue: SCREW K-ROD, SIGN FUENTES! Check it out, K-Rod ERA under 1.00, Fuentes over 5.00. CASTILLO MUST GO! Castillo is hitting .300!! DON'T SIGN SHEFFIELD! Sheffield has been a great signing. OMIR WHO? Omir grand slam! OMIR SUCKS! Omir takes Papelbon deep to win. CASTRO OVER OMIR! Omir drives in every Met run, wins game! EPIC FAIL.

So is Murphy benched now?

Probably won’t start tomorrow vs. C.C., right? Is Sabathia making the start tomorrow? Does Manuel know Murphy and Evans are two different people and not a new switch hitter?

Kevin Burkhardt is calling the game?

I suppose it’s just as well. He likes calling the game more than giving updates, anyway.

Random Socks Tangent

Stokes was throwing a 95-96 mph fastball and a 80-82 mph change-up last night. That has to be a good thing if he disguises it well, right? I think his K-rate will come way up soon.

I have to say Nick Evans

Has a much better swing than Murphy. (and better defence) Just seems like a much better overall player.

by Outside Observer on Jun 25, 2009 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

absolutely

Murphy has a great approach. But in my opinion a slower bat. Its almost like a power hitter approach with a singles hitter.

Evans has a quicker bat. He is learning the approach. I dunno how you speed up a swing. something you are born with or steroids.

by Outside Observer on Jun 25, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I would agree

Except murph’s P/PA is way down this year. Not showing nearly the patience that endeared him to us last year.

by TBlz on Jun 25, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO Murphy is guessing more

To start the swing quicker to hit for more power. Because I think even he realises that there is no point in a great approach if you can’t hit for power. You could be a Castillo and bat lead-off but thats no good cause Murphy doesn’t have the speed.

Thats why I think Evans has much more potential. Because his is swing is better. He can always learn the approach.

I can’t wait for Reyes to come back.

Big strides and steady acceleration. As opposed to Jose Reyes, who runs like an infielder, in that he gets low and takes smaller choppier steps and who really explodes with his acceleration and tops out and levels off quicker.

Feliciano has had a long strange journey – I was just looking at his transaction history on Baseball-reference. Drafted by the Dodgers, released, signed by the Reds, traded to the Mets for Shawn Estes, claimed off waivers by the Tigers, released, re-signed with the Mets, purchased by Fukuoka of the Japanese League where he played for a year, re-signed with the Mets again, and now he’s 7th in career pitching appearances, 12 behind Armando Benitez. And the list ahead of him is a who’s who of Mets relievers + Seaver & Koosman.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
