Michael Jackson Is Dead
Totally off-topic, but it's here in case anyone wants to discuss. His personal problems were well-documented, but in his wake Michael Jackson has left us Thriller, one of the greatest musical things ever.

the tragic figure of our generation
Stunned, but not at all surprised.
As a child of the late 70's
And a DJ in college, I just want to say that despite all the later troubles, the man absolutely defined a decade of pop music, and ALWAYS made the ladies dance. RIP, Jacko.
yeah
I liked Off the Wall better. I recall being contrarian and getting into a drunken argument with a college buddy in 1983 that Thriller was a better record than Murmur, or some such. I said something like REM was marginal alternative music. Funny thing is, I was a big R.E.M. fan, and of course they became fairly huge themselves, if not Thriller huge. I still have a copy of their first single, on Hib-Tone.
Jackson had a fairly tragic life, stage-managed from his earliest days. Incredibly talented, unfortunately seemingly a, well, i guess it goes without saying and not to speak ill of the newly dead. But not like he gets a pass on that.
Come to think of it, I don’t know that anything topped I Want You Back.
I've been disappointed by some people's reactions.
You can have whatever opinion you want about Michael Jackson, but don’t disrespect his family or his legacy on his death day, people.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
Where have people been rude to his family?
I haven’t seen it.
RIP Michael Jackson.
He was pretty much a monster.
I liked many of his songs, but I totally understand the snarky reactions to his death.

I really didn't get into MJ's music
until about 6 months ago, when I got on this really random 80’s music kick, and now I count him as one of my favorite artists. It’s a shame to see what became of him, but his music will always hold up.
whatever he dealt with in his personal life
shouldn’t take away from how brilliant he was with music.
"I told him the next time he does that, I’m going to get my blade out and cut him, right on the field. Hey, I’m a gangsta now. You go gangsta on me, I’m gonna have to get you now."
- Jerry Manuel
hopefully MJ is in a better place now
and finally able to molest all the little boys he never got to here on this mortal plane.
also, why isnt anyone talking about captain eo? that and moonwalker are the best things jackson ever did.
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.
you can youtube Captain EO
Moonwalker, the Sega Genesis game? Incredible. Kill your enemies by dancing.
yeah the game was dope too
but im talking about the crazy movie with joe pesci as the bad guy leading an army of badd ass military dudes with machine guns to stop the magical dancing MJ from fufilling a couple of kids’ wishes (or some crap like that) that procuded the video for smooth criminal that i was obsessed with as a youngin.
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.
Ironic
Two stars died yesterday but only one truly got a great deal of coverage.
M.J. – Totally desired a secluded and private life, yet had the majority of media coverage concerning his death.
Farrah Fawcett – Exposed her illness for the world to see by letting the media into her home during the last weeks of her life but hardly anything was reported about her death. Almost an afterthought to M.J.’s death.
I do understand the different impact that both M.J. and F.F. had on the entertainment scene, but F.F.‘s death has been completely overshadowed by the coverage of M.J.’s death.

Kate Jackson
was more my speed (hmm, at the time I guess Jodie Foster may have been more my speed, or at least my age), but I may have been intimidated. The famous poster, if yoy look at it, the teeth really jump out at you now. She didn’t have an amazingly voluptuous figure, but thin cocaine chic was in (or so I hear, since I was only 12). Girls my age did her hair, or, the mousey brunettes did the Dorothy Hamill bob. About the same time.
Farah did become a fairly successful serious actress. Not my cup of tea, but decent careerism, better than say, Bo Derek, her seventies sexpot sucessor.
My opinion
is that the word ‘sexpot’ has been woefully underutilized over the past two decades. It needs to make swift comeback nowish.

yeah
I just liked it. Rock With You. Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.
I don’t think I’m sui generis here. Thriller itself isn’t my favorite song. Billie Jean was very good, and Thriller was a bigger hit and cultural touchstone.

This was just a kinda funny argument I just googled on Thriller v Off the Wall.
Off The Wall: No. 68
Top 500 albums of all time. Thriller is 20th.
I am sure plenty of folks prefer Thriller. Me, I preferred Off the Wall to Thriller. Rubber Soul to Sgt. Pepper. Darkness on the Edge of Town to Born in the USA.
And I love Exile on Main Street, which I believe was the Stones’ top ranked album.
Although I must say I am partial to Human Nature over She’s Out of my Life on the ballads.
Apparently, there was a battle royale between Thriller and Murmur for Voice album of the year critic’s choice in ’83.
http://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/pnj/pj83.php
Anyway, I am sure there are albums not even on the list some might prefer to Thriller or Off the Wall. Doesn’t count as a rock album, but I’d go with Birth of the Cool, Miles Davis.
And the albums I listened to most that year were Avalon by Roxy Music, X More Fun in the New World, Prince’s 1999, REM’s Murmur and Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues.
I'm with you
on your overall point. There are countless examples of artists whose most popular works are probably not their best. (Although there’s no accounting for taste.) I can think of several Beatles records I like more than Sgt Pepper and I’d rate BITUSA 6th in Bruce’s canon behind all five that preceded it. Exile is definitely as good as the Stones got in album format in spite of its relative obscurity. Off the Wall is probably a good example of this. OTW was first and thus more original than Thriller but Thriller took the style of OTW to its logical extreme.
Yeah
MIchael was supposedly pissed he didn’t win Gramy album of the year for OTW and was determined to make Thriller a blockbuster, can’t be denied. Quincy, Eddie van Halen, etc., and it was just monstrous. In a way, that may be why I kinda recoiled. And Thriller itself just isn’t a song I’m that into. Off the Wall he still had some semblance of normalcy. By Thriller the kinda freaky transformation had already started. Which Thriller the video kinda even touches on.
When Off the wall came out, though, punk was in full swing. RAmones and clash were faves.
Yes
I’d rather listen to Marquee Moon or Pink Flag or London Calling over OTW. But record sales would indicate that we’re in the minority.
500 Albums Ever
Had Buena Vista Social Club as their only Latin entry. I thought it was hilarious. It was obviously the only Latin record they had ever heard of since it was produced by Ry Cooder and released inside the decade.

oh
and UB40s Labour of Love.
But Avalon was the make-out album of the era.
