Hit Tracker: Citi Field Has "Robbed" 36 Home Runs
Through 37 games at Citi Field, the Mets and their opponents have been robbed of 36 homers that likely would have been gone at Shea Stadium. David Wright has been robbed 6 times. Only 2 homers have been hit at Citi that would not have been gone at Shea - both hit by Chase Utley.

Freaking Utley's corner
The players are still getting used to it too. When Church hit his long double off the wall this week, he posed for a homerun but then started busting it.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.

fascinating stuff.
Thanks for linking.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

See? SEE????
I TOLD you, at the beginning of this year, that Utley would have a field day with that right field corner!!! The dimensions must have been designed by a Philly fan.

It would be the same for Delgado though
if he were still alive.

I like Citi Field alright
But the dimensions of the ballpark have begun to bother me more as the season’s progressed. That 16-foot wall in LF is annoying. I like the fact that it’s deeper, but it really penalizes liners/fliners hit by right handed hitters. I don’t care if fly balls die on the warning track, but when bullets are smacking high off the wall and played in quickly by the left fielder, that’s overkill.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the outfield is a mess. The height of the left field wall highlights just how ugly the wall color, soot, is. In right field, the chicken wire bullpen looks low rent (and it’s dangerous!) and the canopies overhead sully the look of ballpark even more. The adjacent Mo’s Zone conspires to make the pens look even crappier because it forces the aforementioned chicken wire fence to jut out.
The Mets would do well to lower all of the fences, remove the chicken wire, pull the Mo’s Zone in to make it flush with the remainder of the outfield and lose the freaking canopies! I do foresee a problem, however, in lowering the fence in left field: there are two doors in left field, approximately as high as the wall, that lead to a loading area underneath the stands. They can remove the top section of padding and paint a line across the remaining section of padding, but the trade-off would be a bunch of home runs that bounce off the bare wall and on to the field of play. There’s something unnerving about those kinds of home runs. A lot of home runs in the left and right field corners at Shea were like that, but this is one third of the entire outfield!

+1
Agree with everything you said. Especially about the wall height being more problematic than the dimensions. It also takes away one of the most exciting plays in the game, the HR robbery, even if it only happens once or twice a year, Voltron was always good for at least one, and if Endy got enough PT he was too.

One little caveat to this
I do think the ball travels quite a bit better at Citi than at Shea. The problem is, the area where it seems to make the biggest difference is down the lines, where HRs are possible anyway. In the alleys the ball still seems to get knocked down. It seems to carry to CF pretty well, but with the wall height and depth of the outfield there, its very difficult to hit em’ out there anyway.

I'd also like to point out
The Mets have still both hit more and allowed more homers at home than on the road, which is still as stunning as it was a month ago. Hit 26 at home and 20 on the road, allowed 34 at home and 31 on the road.

Well you would always expect, in a neutral context
to hit more at home, so it won’t surprise me if those numbers are equal. The other number is more surprising, but Utley.

The giving up more you mean?
Yeah, that’s what makes it extra surprising to me. But I mean, even look at a guy like Dub, just one road HR? For real? That doesn’t seem right at all.
Screw Utley and his stupid short have swing that’s designed for 350 foot homers.

I wish we had a left handed Omir Santos

left handed Omir Santos a better catching option than Schneider, Castro, or Santos.

Nice article...crazy fact from it.
Of the 7 would-be HR’s that turned in to fly-outs, all were hit by opponents. All of ours at least were hits.

Flyballs are more easily turned into outs
This is somewhat anecdotal, but I find that the Mets hitters on “cheated homers” aren’t hitting balls with a ton of loft, instead more liners and fliners.

i like that we have a big ball park
but bring the walls in just a bit.you could tell that citi is in david’s head you would have to hit it a long way to just clear the fence.

I find this one the most interesting
Mike Pelfrey NYM 6/10 3 Cole Hamels PHI Double Base of LF wall

that would be number one right?

I believe so
I remember GK+R talking about Maine having one and Pelf needs one to even the playing field.

He just missed one in Philly
That I was sure was going to go out, but he hit just a bit too much towards the middle of the field and it died on the warning track. I think it did go for a double though. That one also probably had no shot to go out in any other ballpark though.

I love that Luis Castillo got robbed too
Pelfrey has turned into a decent hitter for a pitcher. Dude makes a lot of contact, for whatever that’s worth.
