Wtf is up with Reyes 2nd?

great idea Jerry, put the guy least likely to get on base in front of our best hitter.

Alex Cora batting leadoff...

Is proof that Jerry has no idea what the hell is going on:

Cora is 0-19 in his career against Burnett with 7 K’s
He is hitting .130 over the last 7 days and .210 in June

Does that sound like someone who should be leading off to you?

So to recap, we have a guy who cannot hit the guy who is pitching for the opposition and a guy who cannot hit any guy ever unless it is in AAA, batting 1st and 2nd???

Ladies and gentleman, your 2009 New York Mets!

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by AnthonyR on Jun 27, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair

Cora has generally done a good job of getting on base this season. 0-for-19 is bad, but it’s still just four or five games. Also, look at the rest of the lineup: only one guy can bat eighth, after all.

by Eric Simon on Jun 27, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

But combined with the fact that he is in a deep slump, it was a poor day to give Castillo a rest.

Argenis could give us better defense at short and give Cora a break that he really needs against a guy that he has not done well against.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by AnthonyR on Jun 27, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure...the guy has a mutant hand and is playing out of necessity.

He’s also not an everyday player and has generally done a good job. I don’t blame him, I blame the dullard in the dugout.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by AnthonyR on Jun 27, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

reyes batting 2nd?

and why no evens in in LF.sometimes i think jerry wants us to lose

by JADDENHOPKINS on Jun 27, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions

I just don't get what is so difficult...

Castillo 2B
Murphy 1B
Wright 3B
Church RF
Sheffield LF
Schneider C
Reed CF
A. Reyes SS
Redding P

Write it on a piece of paper, give it to the ump, sit in dugout giving Redding dirty looks when he walks people. Very simple…

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by Sam Page on Jun 27, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just taking what Jerry did and replacing Cora with Castillo

and getting the two people least likely to succeed out of the 1-2 hole.

Unfortunately, there is not much we can do. Redding isn’t a ground ball pitcher and after yesterday, we may won’t to go with a more “defensive” line-up.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

reed?

a rather have church in CF sheff in RF and evens in LF

by JADDENHOPKINS on Jun 27, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Church, Evans, Sheff would be a horrible defensive outfield

It can work for Pelfrey since he’s such a GB pitcher, but redding needs some outfield defense to have a chance.

Up until those first 4 pitches in the 6th, he was doing well. You don’t take a pitcher out when he’s pitching well, especially after 5, and run your BP out there for 4 innings.

by MetsFan4Decades on Jun 27, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

That always seem to be the question asked by those who refuse to realize that Manuel never pulls his pitchers when it’s clear they are gassed.

Manuel can not manage his starting staff.

He even admitted in Newsday that he mismanaged the pen.

by MetsFan4Decades on Jun 27, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He was up to about 95 pitches or so to start the inning. Redding, if you’re lucky, you get about 85 before he loses it. His stamina is not that high.

Anyone else with a brain and knowing Redding would have had the Pen warming before the start of that inning.

Manuel has no clue. Redding was gassed and gave that last inning before he was yanked all he had.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok so let me get this straight

You are in the boat that wants to get someone up in a bullpen that has already been overused this season just in case something happens?
Despite the pitcher looking very solid through the first 5 innings and only allowing 1 run, on an opposite field home run no less, you still want to get the guy up in the bullpen in case something happens. Isn’t this the same croud this gets mad a Jerry for taking Santana out at 110 pitches? Now your mad for not taking Redding out sooner? I just don’t get it.
I am in the club that says get rid of Jerry but this is by no means on the Gangsta.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jun 27, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Lemme see if I have this correct?

Are you telling me you honestly think Redding is good for more than 95 pitches?

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Today?

Yes. He had held the potent Yankee lineup to next to nothing.
Now if he had given up 3 runs in a 3-2 game ect ect, no I would have pinch hit for him in the fifth.
If you go solely on pitch count then your bullpen will be crap by the end of the year. You have to leave your starters in when they are rolling. Nobody could have predicted 4 runs on 4 hits on 4 pitches.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jun 27, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

To say that you can predict the four runs is beyond the pale.

To say that a guy entering an inning with about 95 pitches who normally goes 85, is going to lose it, is easy to predict.

Look at all the games the Mets have blown and look at the 6th and 7th inning. Thats where the most damage is done to us.

Redding rarely goes more then 85-90 pitches before he’s gassed. At that point you have to have some one in the pen ready to go.

It’s a constant pattern with Manuel.

by cjboyd on Jun 27, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

Jerry’s doesn’t have a whole lot of choices with what’s left on this team. We all know Castillo wasn’t playing 162 games. We have no Jose, so Cora has to play short. Doesn’t leave a lot of options. Could have put Tatis at short but not like he’s hitting either.

The win loss record doesn’t capture the futility. After today they will be a misleading 9-14. Dropping 6 of 8 series. Outscored something like 97-125. Giving up 9 or more runs 5 times. It feels worse.

Beyond embarrassing.

Holy shit. Forfeiting this game would have shown more heart.

We’ve been outhit 22-4 over 2 games. I don’t even want to watch tomorrow. This team should just quit already.

30-1 going back to the 6th inning of the game nieve pitched

There is no upside to this.

You can’t even completely blame Jerry Manuel. He has no freaking players. It’s not like I’m going to wake up tomorrow and see that he got canned to brighten up my day.

it would brighten my day to see Art Howe replace him as interim

hell, they’re still probably paying him

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
