John Sickels Live Chat, Today at 2pm EDT

Just a quick programming note to announce. John Sickels, prospect guru extraordinaire from Minor League Ball, will be taking your questions at 2pm EDT on Tuesday TODAY, right here at Amazin' Avenue. The format will be as follows:

  1. You will post your questions in the comments.
  2. John Sickels will reply to your comments with his answers.

Pretty straight-forward. John will stick around for as long as his schedule and his interest permits, so start thinking of your questions now and don't embarrass us or he'll never come back and it'll be all your fault.

I just found out I have a commitment tomorrow.

So…can I put a couple of questions here that you can choose between to maybe consider asking during the chat?

Go for it

I’ll make sure they’re in the thread tomorrow

Thanks. Though, I'm sure some of these would have been asked regardless.

- Biggest prospect risers since the beginning of the season?
- How does Davis project as a future 1st baseman? Does it look like he has the most power? Out of the three corner infield/outfield guys who are the most highly regarded/closest to big league level (Evans, Murphy, Davis), who if any of them could possibly hold down a full time job at the position i.e. not need a platoon partner?
- A defensive scouting report on F! Is he most likely to be moved to LF, or does he have the range to be in a more premium defensive position?
- Any interesting scouting information on guys we picked up in the draft
- Nieuwenhuis. He seems to be quietly putting some stuff together this year, and I was wondering what sort of ceiling/development would be possible for him.

answering some of this....

I think Davis has the most upside of the first base/corner guys.

I think FMart will end up in left field eventually. He’ll lose enough speed as he gets older to spend the majority of his career there.

Still rather have Wilmer than Fartinez?

Martinez IIRC whips Wilmer at the same age in Sally League

Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa

yeah

Yeah, he does…obviously, I’d rather have Fmart than Wilmer now.

Uhh

For whatever reason I just realized that this chat is going to collide with today’s Mets game. I have an email out to John to see if we can reschedule for next week sometime. I’ll post an update when I hear back.

by Eric Simon on Jul 2, 2009 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

Hopefully it can be rescheduled

But this is interesting enough that I think a lot of us would still attend the chat, if it can’t be.

No worries

We’ll get you all hooked up.

What's Happened To

Dock Doyle? He raked in college, hit .300 last year, but doesn’t have many abs this year. Is he injured, or just not that good? We hear a lot about Thole, but not Doyle. He’s got a cool name, I want him to make it.

by David G on Jul 7, 2009 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Doyle's also thrown out

40% of base stealers, that’s good, even if it’s only single A, where pitchers probably aren’t holding guys on, right?

I'm going to be at a meeting today, so I hope this is where we leave the questions. If not, I'd appreciate if someone could move them.

1) Is Jenrry Mejia a top-50 MLB prospect?

2) What do you make of Robert Carson and Scott Shaw?

3) What is Wilmer Flores’s ceiling?

by Pat Andriola on Jul 7, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

A few more

What’s happened to Jefry Marte? I see he’s got 31 errors in 70 games and he’s not hitting either?

Can Havens be made into a second basemen, and how far away is he from being major league ready?

James Fuller: Future lefthanded reliever maybe, or is he just putting up nice numbers in a pitchers league for Brooklyn?

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
In order to raise extra capital, the Mets have explored signing Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training (replete with curiously high uniform number).
