So Much for Santana Applesauce

So, how long before the media starts panicking about Johan Santana

Meet the Mets

Add swine flu to the list of Met ailments. Fortunately, it appears as though the disease's spread has been limited.

Alex Cora is back and Ramon Martinez made Omar's decision easier by getting hurt in a slide last night.

Here's more Putz analysis. Matt Cerrone talks to Ted Berg about the struggling reliever.

The American Cancer Society is urging the Mets to go to their classic uniforms and make a difference in the process.

As the injuries continue to mount for the Mets, Fernando Martinez's chances of staying with the team increase.

Toby Hyde chats with Josh Thole.

Butch Huskey thanks the Mets for honoring him in their rotunda.

Mandatory Mustache ranks Bobby Valentine #8 for best Met mustaches

Around the NL East

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Nationals will draft Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg's coach, Tony Gwynncautions fans and the media on overhyping his guy.

If Strasburg ever does get to the Nationals, he will not be coached by Randy St. Claire, who was fired yesterday.

The Nationals still have a chance of making the playoffs, although it is becoming slimmer by the day. They kept hope alive last night by beating the Giants 10-5.

Former Met prospect and current Nat catcher Jesus Flores has a stress fracture in his shoulder that is putting the remainder of this season in jeopardy.

The Phillies beat up on their dream date Jake Peavy10-5, giving Antonio Bastardo his first major league victory.

Philadelphia activated left handed reliever JC Romero after he completed his drug-related suspension. Sergio Escalona was demoted to triple-A to make room on the roster.

Florida second baseman Dan Uggla became the fastest second baseman in baseball history to hit 100 HRs and the Marlins beat the Brewers 10-3. Prior to the game, Florida welcomed back pitcher Anibel Sanchez from the DL.

The Braves came from behind in dramatic fashion to knock off the Cubs in extra innings. Atlanta was being no hit until the 7th.

Brave pitcher Tom Glavine had another good rehab start and says he's ready for the big leagues.

Atlanta has demoted center fielder Jordan Schafer to triple-A

Around MLB

Sports Illustrated has a great article on the value of trades. Pay attention Omar.

The City of Detroit has rejected a bid to make Tiger Stadium a historical landmark. The stadium will continue to be demolished.

The Brewers have released Met favorite Jorge Julio.

Randy Johnson is going for his 300th win tonight.

Outfielder Josh Hamilton is going to the DL.

Are the Yankees actually good at defense? Or just not committing errors?

Artificial turf fields are safe for players, still hurt the eyes, however.

So should Reed start today?

Whether or not Beltran plays? Sheff is hurting and Reed as hit the ball well in pittsbrugh (2 doubles on monday, 3 hits last night), but jerry seems to be waivering on the “I play the hot hand” front.

Also, I feel a little nauseous that its June and I am asking if Jeremy Reed, career lifetime hitter of .261 (.684 OPS), should get more playing time. We need a bat ASAP.

by meigs1414 on Jun 3, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

Jerry's new thing

is to take the hot hand — unless the hot hand is named Santos — out of the lineup so as to preserve the hot hand’s confidence.

This team seems snakebit of late...

The injuries plus the swine flu scare is unbelievable. I can’t remember anything like this in my nearly 40 years of rooting for the Mets… Hopefully Reyes and Beltran return ASAP, and I think Omar has to seriously find another bat, either at 1B or corner OF spot. I wish the Phillies would lose a few — how about Ibanez — are you kidding me? How is this guy having a career year at age 37??

Auto-links

Its funny because the auto-link of Tony Gwynn is to his son, the current player on the Padres, and not the HOFer, who is actually the coach of Strasburg.

Yeah, I'm learning

Yeah, all these injuries and illness is just unimaginable. You can’t even get on them for not winning the last two games (for the most part =P), because look at all the guys getting hurt. Who knows who ends up getting hurt tonight.

As for the news & notes, sad to hear about Flores’s season possibly ending. Of course there’s a sigh of relief, seeing as he could be a Met, this is the second time his season is ending early due to injury.

As for Randy St. Claire being fired, I always thought he would verbally abuse the pitchers out there. I was never there, but he was constantly yelling and extremely angry. Sure they can’t pitch.. God knows the Nats need a change.

that is a great Butch Huskey tribute in the Citi Field Rotunda

except for all the jack asses making stupid guido posses in front of it. you know the look im talking about right? squatting or one one knee, head tilted to the side with a smirk, to armas outstretched with hands some fake gang symbols? yeah, those people were ruining my experience at the buitch huskey tribute.

in the enemy's lair

I was at Yankee Stadium last night (or as my mom advised me, “Don’t forget, the game is at the NEW Yankee Stadium.” thanks mom), taking my nephew to a game. Tickets courtesy of a family friend. Field level, section 126, row 15, aisle seats along third base line. Not Legends section but better setas than I have sat in for about 10 years.

My nephew, like me, is a Mets fan. Unfortunately, at 14, he hasn’t gotten beyond the David Wright is overrated, Omir Santos is clutch thing, but he is fairly well schooled (he made a snide comment to Wright’s babip to homer ratio).

When I was his age I was pretty anti-yankee, which developed as I got into teenage rivalry years (even younger, while still a Mets fan, I didn’t mind the Yakees,a nd was kind of fascinated by the whole Fritz Peterson/Mike Kekich wife and family swapping story). My nephew is more even-keeled than I was as a young teen.

Anyway, not a great game, although there were some brushback wars to liven it up.

On Yankee defense, Gardner made a nice play on a Chris Davis drive to deep center. He seems to have a good uzr in a limited sample in Centerfield. Moving melky to right to replace Abreu is an upgrade, although Melky was not a great cf, and Gardner is pretty good there. Certainly, texeira is good at first and they highlight that on the big screen, showing a lot of his plays before the game even started.

Both Arod (and Young on texas) seemed a step slow on grounders to their lefts, or they just gave up.

Oh, and someone about 100 feet from us took a bat that flew from Melky’s hands. Couldn’t see how bad but from the looks of surrounding faces, not great. Davis did the same to someone on the first base side.

Haven’t been to citifield yet, but I will make it a couple of times this year at least. Food wasn’t bad at yankee (Carl’s Junior steak sandwich-hey they even have apples and pears), but i hear citifield is better.

Oh, and I even had a Bushmills on the rocks.

plus the line was way shorter. But yea, Shake Shack is the best.

by cjmulrain on Jun 3, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Shake Shack

Been to the Shake Shack on 23rd street in madison park many times. BBQ joint must be Blue Smoke, same guy owns both. Yankee Stadium bbq is brother jimmy’s, which is ok for an ACC hoops game frat boy fest, but the ‘cue doesn’t stand up.

I think we've had this conversation around here

but again, Brother Jimmy’s is terrible BBQ. I’m really spiteful about it because It’s located right down the street of my GF’s apartment and I’m a huge BBQ fan (who isn’t.)

Natty lights?

Big high life fan,

being an accountant, I find the cost/taste ratio of the high life beats out all similar priced beer. If the beer has a nickname, it’s usaully a bad sign.
Natural Lights = Natty/Natty light/Natty Ice/etc
Keystone = The Stones/Stone
Pabst Blue Ribbon = PBRs
That being said, my college days are over and now I’m a snobby asshole drinking this.

The Champagne of Beers

I suppose that’s really more of a title than a nickname. It still gets warmly received at parties with my friends, possibly because most of us don’t make a ton of money.

pong

I had never played pong until about 3 years ago. Back in the day, we might play quarters (or as one ex-navy guy who was about 5 years older than the rest of my college cohort said “navy men don’t play games with their drinkin’ son.”).

Anyway, a younger colleague at work invited me to a party at some bar on 87th and third I think, and I played. I was 15-20 years older than these people. And the first time I played I was making like half my shots, a few in a row at one point, and kinda dominated a few games. To much cheering. Not sure if these people were any good, or if half your shots isn’t great. But it seemed good at the time. Whereupon I stopped and haven’t played since. I don’t want to risk my rep.

Today's dose of Metsblog wisdom

…the Mets are missing an utley/victorino-type player and need this type of guy now more than ever… this why i believe Mark De Rosa should be the Mets top target on the trade market… he has utley-like qualities and can produce while playing all over the diamond…

Tyler Kepner of the New York Times relays the "Yankees Play Hard Index" that is posted in the Yankees Triple-A clubhouse.

…perhaps the Mets should make this mandatory reading and post it in their major league clubhouse…

by jasondg on Jun 3, 2009 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

That was such a terrible post on Metsblog.

We don’t need Utley/Victorino. We have our own guys who are obviously playing through pain…and playing pretty well at that.

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Um, I'd like Utley because he's a good player

I agree with your point with whole intangibles part of it, but Utley is, arguably, the best 2B in the game and an annual MVP candidate.

And again, I’d like Mark DeRosa, only because he can play a bunch of positions well and can hit. Clearly, I am not giving up the farm for him, but in a good deal I wouldn’t say no to DeRosa.

by meigs1414 on Jun 3, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The point I'm trying to make

Is that the Mets have a core that is just as good and in some ways better than the Phils. This whole grit argument needs to stop.

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Its trendy

Like the change-up of 8 years ago.

by TBlz on Jun 3, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

And I would take DeRosa in a good deal too.

I’m just tiring of all this media hype surrounding Utley and Victorino…clearly pissing intensity and the Mets cowering in big situations.

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Derosa too

Not because he’s gritty and has “Utley -like qualities” but because he’s an above-average player (for the most part) who can play like 5 positions.

WTF does “Utley-like qualities” mean? Curses a lot? Looks like Jay Mohr? Shits out solid bricks of grission?

by jasondg on Jun 3, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 3, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It's like the guy over at Metsblog who wrote the article (I think it's Nichols)

Just doesn’t understand that just because they are Chase Utley and Shane Victorino and they play for the Phils (!) that they have some magical power to make other players play with more intensity or ‘fire’

Do you think if the Mets had signed Dunn this offseason and he was hitting bombs for us like he is hitting bombs for the Nats…would people care if he wasn’t an ‘intensity’ guy? I would hope not

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn Hates Baseball

Someone at Metsblog doesn’t understand something obvious? You don’t say.

by jasondg on Jun 3, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm the one missing the joke...haha

I don’t think Dunn hates baseball…he did play in the WBC afterall.

He just doesn’t piss intensity like Vic Torino.

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Would people care?

No doubt that some people would. I mean, look at the start Beltran has had to this season (hell, or pretty much every season he’s had here), and he still gets called out routinely and predictably for not having fire/emotion/heart/grission/husart/etc.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
