Around SBN: Randy Moss A Raven?

"As promised, Jerry Manuel spoke with J.J. Putz today and told him he would be given a role with "less responsibility."

In other words, Putz has been dropped to the 7th inning and the 8th now belongs to Bobby Parnell until further notice. "

If Jerry stopped defining bullpen roles and “giving” innings to certain pitchers, we’d be at least a few games better in the standings.

Damn Right.

He should use whatever pitcher will give him the best chance to win at that time. The role stuff is tired and worn out.

Good

Parns deserves it.

Really, Jerry?

by Prince on Jun 3, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily good

If Putz comes in to face the oppositions best hitters with a one or two run lead, does it matter if it’s in the 7th or 8th? Right now I’d rather have Parnell in that situation regardless of the inning.

If Jerry had said that he was going to use Putz in lower leverage situations, I would be happier. But that would require Jerry to actually understand leverage situations which he clearly doesn’t.

The best thing about this is that if Putz blows a lead in the 7th, the Mets would have 6-9 outs to come back. But since we all know they have no grission that is highly unlikely.

At least now

If there’s a big lefty due up, Jerry won’t feel compelled to stick with Putz on reputation alone, and will feel more inclined to have PedroDos up and ready to come in.

i have to agree

right now i don’t want JJ to be in any pressure situations, bring him in when the mets are up or down at least 6 runs. First i want see if he can handle himself in those situations

by celtic20 on Jun 4, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Will JJ be able to muster enough adrenaline to pitch in the 7th?

I think they need to look to deal him now. They probably can get someone alright in return.

Thoughts?

That's the best case scenario

But then again, after last season. You can’t have too much depth in the bullpen.

by EMSfan9 on Jun 3, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree...

But if you can get some production for Putz, why not look into it?

by metsman07 on Jun 3, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

I wouldn’t go out and deal him unless it meant freeing up payroll room for a meaningful acquisition.

For about 3 seconds, I thought Putz was demoted to AAA

THAT would have been shocking.

Haha

That’s what I thought. This is only a demotion is Jerry’s role-ridden fantasyland. Otherwise, its an unsuccessful middle reliever going from being used completely improperly due to reputation to being used something vaguely closer to properly.

Man, I must be exhausted or something.

I could have sworn your first sentence included the phrase Jerry’s ritalin fantasyland

That would make sense though.

I'm skeptical

Jerry has made these types of grand pronouncements before and not followed through. This will happen until Parnell struggles once or is “unavailable” for a game.

Kudos to JMan

Surprised Coach made the switch this quickly. Hopefully he will follow through unlike his comments about Murph being a starter during the pre-season

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
