Nice

an automatic double play batting 2nd. Cora better have his double-hitting shoes on tonight, he might had the pleasure of being moved to third on a weak grounder.

nope

Tatis only hits his grounders to SS and 3B

We must be gluttons for punishment

at least Santana is pitching tonight. And there is always hope when Santana pitches.

by aparkermarshall on Jun 30, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe Wright gets some pitches to hit tonight

Looks like they put SOMETHING, if not much, behind him.

This looks like a night where we leave 12 men stranded though.

An extra out

A double from that dude who sells Toyota’s, and some shoddy mop up 9th inning relief pitching from the Brewers.

Split start for Ollie.

I just read that and thought they were serious with that

by aparkermarshall on Jun 30, 2009 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

Johan

If we can get 9 shut out innings out of Johan, and a lot of luck, we could steal this one from the Brewers.

by Mex_17 on Jun 30, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

Isn't it sad that there are no sure things on this roster?

I was hoping to wake up the morning and read that Manuel was fired and Minaya out the door with him.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that even Johann would struggle here this badly.

by Chickendirt on Jun 30, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Johan

I think Johan is pretty much the only player the Mets have who has earned his paycheck. You could count Sheff too I guess.

Everyone else either underperforms, is wildly inconsistent, and/or chokes when it counts.

by Mex_17 on Jun 30, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, I think "choke" is a little overused

Last season with Wagner down and Ayyala closing I knew we were in trouble.

Our lineup really does have holes. Once you got past Reyes, Wright, Beltran and got to about the fifth spot all you had to do whas walk the guy and pitch to the rest.

Down the stretch last year that lost about six or seven games due to the line up holes alone.

by Chickendirt on Jun 30, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh...no.

Shut up.

With Wagner out

The team performed as it should have down the stretch.

The Pen blew games and lots of them.

That’s not choking. That’s performing to expectations. There’s a difference.

by anonymous on Jun 30, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

My point

Was tha Johan is the only player on this team that has a ball sack, and who has been as good as, or better than adverstised.

Wright was supposed to be the second coming of god, and so far, not so good.

If you love Wright and think he’s a shoo-in HOF’er, then cool. That’s your opinion.

Saying that it’s disappointing that Wright has 5 HRs is not “insane”.

by Mex_17 on Jun 30, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

You're barking up the wrong tree for a guy who is hitting .340

and is our only semblance of an offensive threat.

by AnthonyR on Jun 30, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

You said Wright hasn't "played to his potential."

Unless you mean that his potential is to become the best ballplayer of the last twenty-five years, he’s already there. Being “disappointed” in Wright is, yes, completely nuts.

by anonymous on Jun 30, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

But you're soooooooooo wrong.

Wright should have 11. He’s been robbed 6 already by Citi Field alone.
All people on this team have ball sacks. Even Jeremy Reed (debatable).
And no one expected Wright to be the second coming of God. He’s consistently been one of the best players in baseball over the last 3 years, and is on pace to do it again.

Wright hit 6 fly balls that would have been out at Shea. His power’s down, but his average is up, and the power isn’t down that much. He’s fine. Relax.

by Mex_17 on Jun 30, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No, but,

Wright is supposed to be a power hitter. Especially now that the Mets have no one else capable of hitting a HR besides him.

by Mex_17 on Jun 30, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exactly why we don't need him to hit for power

If all he did was hit HRs and not get on base then we would be losing games 6-1

There is a SS in AAA who is blocked by him

He’s almost certainly going within the not too distant future.

I always find it intriguing the way some groups really like one player or another and there is a core of fairly intense dislike for Hardy that baffles me.

Can't do much without many useful athletes

I can see killing Omar for his offseason, but he’s playing about the only way to play it right now. First do no harm.

Just about all Omar’d be doing right now is adding payroll or giving away low cost talent. A Nyjer Morgan for Lastings Milledge move could help at the margins but doesn’t fundamentally change things.

Sometimes all you can say is that these guys aren't that good...

if they could make better plays they’d be better players. Obviously, Santana is all-world but when you have such little margin for error you start making mistakes that compound an overall lack of talent.

I agree he hasn’t been great. Today it is partly his fault, partly the fielding (well, he made a bad fielding play himself). But I do think he isn’t himself. Just look at him in April and early May to now. And he obviously lost velocity.

Ok...let's see

Let’s take a team that survived bullpen woes all of last season to barely miss the playoffs.

Said team adds plenty of bullpen help in the off season poised to make a run = playoff caliber.

This said now playoff caliber team loses 3 of its top 4 hitters and two middle of the rotation starters.

Those players lost are replaced by agin has beens, too raw rookies and no better than No. 5 starters and what do you have? A NON PLAYOFF CALIBER TEAM!

Put any and every team in the Mets shoes, even the Red Sox and Yankees and they end up in the EXACT same spot.

it was both. It was a bad play, but Santos probably should have gotten it (or at least kept it from getting away). So two separate things, basically.

to the number of errors and fuck-ups in that inning.

It hasn’t just been the injuries and lack of talent, as bad as that is. This team has been doing shit like this even at full health. well, not quite this bad.

I know it sounds stupid, but they need a good damn tongue lashing. Jerry for all jis gangster talk is mister feelgood. Willie was a worrier. They may need a yeller.

Funniest thing today (humor to get away from such a dismal experience)

I had some Giants fan tell me that Sandoval is a better third basemen than Wright.

I pointed out stats that shows Wright is one of the best all around players in the game.

He had nothing else left to argue and claimed that Wright is roiding cause is HRs are down this year. Claims that the only reason he ahead of Sandoval is becuase of some east coast bias.

This wasn’t just one Giants fan but four of them. Really funny stuff.

I'd feel that way except that look at the other teams in the NL

after the Dodgers there are teams that are completely healthy playing barely better ball in the last 20 games than the Mets. As crappy as we are, if we can just avoid the 6-10 game losing streak, nobody other than LA scares me in the NL.

And nobody other than Chicago has been even remotely as injured. We’ll get some of our guys back and other teams will get some of their guys hurt. But this is the season through the All-Star break. We can’t completely toss it in.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
