Kickin' It: Brewers 6, Mets 3

Five straight losses. Fortunately the Phillies lost to the Braves in extra innings so the Mets remain three games out. Though I was once hopeful that they might be able to stay in contention with this set of guys I have become less and less sanguine over the course of the past week. Not surprising, considering the way the Mets have played. You're never as bad as your worst days and never as good as your best; the Mets may be banged up and oftentimes managerially inept, but they're not this bad.
The Mets wrap up their series with the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon before heading to Pittsburgh for a makeup game.

Is it weird I feel good about this team?
Maybe not this team, but the overall direction of the Mets?
I know it sucks right now, but my god have we been killed by injuries. We still have Wright, Reyes, a few nice looking prospects, and, oh yeah, a lot of money.
I’m most concerned with Johan Santana. Not his pitching (so much, but he has walked the pitcher 6 times this season), but you just cannot show up your teammates the way he did. Sorry, Johan, that you aren’t back in Minnesota, but you win and lose as a team.
Oh, and let’s replace Jerry Manuel with Ron Darling.

I understand what you're saying with Santana.
Still, I can understand his frustration. And isn’t the media always calling for more “Passion” from the Mets? I think things will work out.

but I really think Bobby V deserves another shot.

I am concerned with his pitching
He’s just not whiffing anyone, those weak singles other teams are getting against him were swings and misses before, I’m sorry but the thought of a non strike out Johan terrifies me. If he doesn’t starts whiffing people again we just lost an ace. Maybe i’m overreacting.
I didn’t saw his rant between innings live because i had the Brewers feed, just saw it didn’t thought it was a big deal, normal heat of the moment after a series of stupid errors.

still
there was the first batter, a 4 pitch walk to the pitcher. Then, after Martinez tripped, he lost it, walked the next batter on 4, grooved an 0-2 to Braun, and committed an error of his own. Yeah, Martinez dropped a ball. And maybe Santos should have blocked the throw to the plate. But Santana had a large share of responsibility for that inning.
I can understand the anger. And Jordan used to get on teammates all the time.
Jerry may have meant this when he talked about individualism.
I don’t know how big a deal it really is. What, someone won’t try behind Johan now? I doubt it.
But the k/bb rate have been disturbing, and why I questioned whether he’d really answered the concerns with his prior 2 outings. The Ks are one thing, but he can get by if not dominate without them. It’s the walks. And the pitcher walks. yowza. How would he like it if David Wright made an ugly face when he walked the pitcher, hands on hips?
But maybe they all should do it. All this give him some love seems to be enabling. :)

Wow. Cerrone blamed Cora for the throw.
He says “the throw from cut off man Alex Cora sailed over Omir Santos’ head”. Come on.

lol and when you thought it sucked already:
Josh Thole dislocated his left thumb. He’ll have X-Rays tomorrow. “Hopefully,it’s not that serious,” said B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras.

It doesn't matter that the Phillies lost
We cannot win a division or a wild card with all our injuries, our endless series of embarrassing mistakes and our clownish, overmatched manager. I’d love to be wrong here, but I just don’t see it.
by Ballonthewall on Jun 30, 2009 11:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah we can...
If we can manage to play a bit better than the horror show of the last week, I think we’ll be okay.
I figure we’ll be about 7 out at the All-Star Break. Very doable.
If we were in any other division, we’d be screwed, but if we can stem the tide here until we get at least some of the guys back, we’ll make it a Pennant Race.
I wish we would go get a bat (Alexis Rios!!!!) but I like us in this situation. At least we’ll be coming from the rear instead of falling from the front. Maybe it suits us better…

it's great that we're in it and all
but god, it’s hard as hell to watch. the dumb roster/managerial decisions just make it worse — Oil Spill should be up and playing SS every day. It’s not just that this team can’t hit, it’s that Jerry and Omar are just killing the defense. Would it make a huge difference? Probably not, but like Eric said/implied — when the team is shorthanded, the manager has to bear down and really nail the thing. And Jerry is screwing the pooch in almost every way he can.
I’d say something about the lineup construction and Omir, but we’ve discussed it to death. it’s pathetic.

The 4 runs he gave up sort of ruin it
The 2009 Amazin' Avenue: SCREW K-ROD, SIGN FUENTES! Check it out, K-Rod ERA under 1.00, Fuentes over 5.00. CASTILLO MUST GO! Castillo is hitting .300!! DON'T SIGN SHEFFIELD! Sheffield has been a great signing. OMIR WHO? Omir grand slam! OMIR SUCKS! Omir takes Papelbon deep to win. CASTRO OVER OMIR! Omir drives in every Met run, wins game! EPIC FAIL.

Gotta keep going, gotta believe
Look like Santana went into a meltdown, how can u blame him. A lot of bad errors, a couple of good plays, and some drama. But I’m sticking with the Mets til the bitterend. And I feel like everyone else, it gonna get worst before it get better. Lets turn the page and move foward.
Today will be better than yesterday...

There is still a chance
I have been talking myself off the ledge for weeks now. If, and that is a big if, we can get some of our guys back after the break the schedule sets up nicely for a run. They have alot of home games and head to head match ups with the teams in front of them for the division and or wild card. I know it feels like a life time but the season is still young. Look at it this way if we do not get our guys back after the break then they still have time to pull the trigger on a tread. That being said if they lose 9 of the next 11 games then I am back on that ledge.
by Mustangruben on Jul 1, 2009 7:52 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
of course there's a chance
They seemed dead lat year at this time too. Guys come back and they have a good chance. A lot of season left, and look what the Phils did in ‘07 and ’08. Maybe not a 50% chance, but they certainly have it in them, if they get healthy. We’ve seen Santana and Pelfrey pitch better than this. Ollie of course as well. The bullpen hasn’t been awful A lot of ifs, but if Beltran Delgado and Reyes come back, or 2 of them, and maybe a couple of other guys pick up their games, Church, Murph/Evans. A lot needs to go right, but a lot stranger things have happened.
The ’73 team was in much worse shape later in the year (they had great starting though), and the ’69 team was way behind an actually decent team. 3 games back? That is nothing.
Yes, they have been awful recently. They aren’t even close to out of it. Hell, the Rockies and Pads have gone on huge 10 game win streaks and they aren’t great teams. I don’t expect that in the current state, but they can certainly do that if some guys come back.
I think a huge part of it has to be starting pitching. So the thing I want most is a run by Pelfrey like last summer. A 7 inning 3 or fewer e.r. start today would be very nice.
Of course, Pelf has been worse during the day than at night every year of his career. Don’t know if they can read his pitchers better or if Pelf, uh, likes to sleep in late. OK, out with the bad thoughts…visualize Pelf inducing grounders and getting at least 5ks per 9. :)

oops
forgot gallardo ws opposing pitcher today, and Jerry says he will rest Wright and maybe Sheff. That’s kinda insane. Sheff I can see, but if Wright is healthy, he is just getting out of a slump…and the team j=kinda needsa win. Win a game and then rest him. maybe he figures day game after night game, etc.

I'm not advocating giving up on the team
but for God’s sake, don’t buy tickets this season. The only way to send a msg to the organization is to stick it to them the only way we have power to do so. Lower prices or open their wallets for free agents next off season

Hate to say it
but I agree with you. Ownership needs to get that message where they can feel it.
by Ballonthewall on Jul 1, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They need a spark.
If we get Beltran and Reyes back after the break I still think they should get someone like Adam Dunn. He would hit the ground running and will give the rest of the guys some protection until they get their feet under them. Has anyone heard what they would want in return?
by Mustangruben on Jul 1, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think the pitching will right itself once Santana and Pelfrey feel like they have some runs to play with. It must really suck knowing that if you fall behind by a couple of runs then the game is over. No one can argue that this has under performed, even with the injuries, but I do feel bad for them.
by Mustangruben on Jul 1, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's a bunch of bologna, and you sound like an apologist
I used to feel bad for Santana too but he puts himself in bad positions walking pitchers, giving up tons of XBH;s to lefties and now not striking people out. He’s been given runs before and gives them right back. Pelfrey just can’t close games out-it seems you can count on him to self-destruct when the 6th inning starts
by Rigsay on Jul 1, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Do You Really Sit Wright today?
After he gets 3 hits and a homer, and you’re playing in a park conducive to homers? Homers can come in bunches. Let him sit over the weekend, you can’t sit your best player in the middle of a losing streak. I realize there’s never a good time, but come on.
by David G on Jul 1, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Or let him sit against Pittsburgh on Thursday
by Eric Simon on Jul 1, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't get Jerry sitting his best players against tough pitching.
It’s like waiving a white flag. I’d rather have him and Sheff in there against Gallardo and a good Brewers team than in a 12:35 start in Pittsburgh. If you want to give them a day, that is the time.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

I am not giving them a free pass by any means. I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten so pissed off at Santana for walking people ,let along the pitchers that I feel something pop in my brain. What I am saying is that the toll of trying to keep this minor league team above water has caught up to them. You can not be an effective picture if you know that you have to be perfect and can not fall behind. You can not pitch scared. So may be they are trying to throw harder or be perfect and they wind up being lit up. I do not think anyone of them goes out there and says “Hey lets just walk everyone tonight”. I do think it catches up to you at some point. Imagine if you knew that your only real chance of winning is if you struck everyone out. You can not count of people catching balls hit to them. You can not count on people making the routine throw. You can not count on the front office to have the foresight to get you role players or get palyers that can play in this new ball park. The only thing you can count on is someone F***ing up. That would suck. You need trust in your teamates. Right now who can they trust?
by Mustangruben on Jul 1, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I see what you are saying and agree to some point
but after the Mets put up a 2 spot why did I feel like it was impossible that Santana could cruise the rest of the way and give up a run or less?
Is that too much to ask once in a while?

I am with you there. Those would be the times when I feel the onset of the aneurysm. What is so frustrating to me is that when they are all healthy and on the same page I truly feel that they are the team to beat. And to watch them roll out the same old crap everynight hurts. Someone once wrote here that they wish they could just fall asleep and wake up a month later and see that they are back in first place and rolling along like we all know they can. That is how I feel everyday for the past month. I too like this line up for what we have. Go Mets!

maybe a title too!
"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran
