"McLouth wasn't there and they still come out and score how many runs? Eleven? Eleven runs. So we have to play better."

Beltran finally becoming the vocal leader? I'm sure the media will find someway to spin this as whining.

I think this has been coming from Beltran for a while

He really has developed into a leader, both on the field and in the clubhouse I’m sure.

He actually kind of reminds me of Brian Leetch….always a great leader by example but many thought he was too ‘quiet’ to be the outright captain.

I just posted this...guess you beat me to the punch

But year I agree. The media will find some way to spin this the wrong way after criticizing Beltran about lack of heart and leadership earlier this year.

Face for radio no doubt

Even if most of what he says is no where near true or what anyone else believes…he can be entertaining

oh and Evan Roberts is worse

Disagreed. But they're both not that great...

Disagree on them not being entertaining ever?

Ok, ok maybe I’m alone on that one…

I mean ok maybe I shouldn’t say Evan is worse…I don’t really listen that often

Seriously

Joe Benigno thinks he is like the godfather of NY sports or something. The guy is such a joke. You can understand that a fan of a team will live and die with every game, and sometimes say knee jerk things they don’t really mean, but these SNY guys are clowns. Especially Benigno. The guy hates a guy, then he loves him, he wants Reyes traded, then we need him. I can’t stand Benigno, he is like Mike F, just as condescending and he thinks he is some sort of expert, but as much as it drives me crazy, Francesa is usually at least accurate, and half of Francesa’s rants are meant to be antagonistic, for his ratings, but Benigno just vents out of the public forum that is SNY. I hate how Beltran is treated by the media. hate the NY Media in general, they kill Reyes and Beltran for everything, but Wright gets a free pass for life, which ends up turning me against Wright, which is also stupid. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

I would have been dead set against this during the winter or even a month ago, but anybody think a Matt Holliday pickup would be appropriate? Would something like Niese, Murphy, Church and Gee get it done? I like Murph, but the Mets need to do something, whether it be adding a number or 3 arm or an impact bat, because they are just wildly inconsistent. Every time you think they are about to start rolling, they follow up a nice winning streak by losing 4 in a row out west, or losing 3 in a row to Pittsburgh, or whatever, but it really is just maddening.

I love this team, and I still believe in them, but it is just annoying to see them lose these stupid games. They always seem to ruin any momentum they build up by losing a horrible game (monday, Putz blows a game, the SF Angel Pagan pinch hitting debacle), and then they can’t seem to bounce back for a couple of days after that. I figured the Mets would be 10 over by the time they finished with Washington, now I feel like we would be lucky to take 2 of 3 from those guys. And to make matters worse, Johan, the king, has had two rough outings in a row, his velocity looks down and his changeup is up. God forbid anything happen to that man, or the Mets are screwed for about 5 years.

Hey nrmax!

Welcome to the party :)

Agreed with most of what you said. Beningo’s a tool. As for Holliday, I’m just not sure Billy Beane would give up Holliday for that package. If he couldn’t find anything better he might. I’m slightly concerned about Johan too, but really he looks like he did early last year. It may just be that the setback in ST meant that instead of going into the year with a slightly dead arm, it happened a month or so later. Hopefully he pushes through and has a typical Johan second half, and it still would be one of the best pitched seasons I’ve ever seen.

Johan

Yeah. I never really thought of it that way. He really hasn’t been too bad lately, just some bad innings here and there.

His pitches have been up a lot lately

And velos been down. But yeah, it pretty much looks like he did in some of his late April starts last year, when he had some “rough” outings.

Pretty nice when a rough outting

consists of allowing 3 runs and striking out five. Could be worse haha.

Yup, it was the same early last year

The six runs he gave up are the most total runs he’s given up in a start as a Met.

The media in New York is really terrible to certain players

A guy with Beltran’s ability should never be panned the way he is. It really is terrible.

Or maybe McCutchen is better than McLouth...

Or maybe it’s one game.

Also....

Beltran really shouldn’t have to be a rah-rah type leader. The guy is amazing in pretty much every facet. He just does everything he is supposed to do. You can’t hit a ball over his head, he takes away both gaps, he runs the bases as well as anybody in the league, and he gives you power from both sides of the plate, with OBP. He leads by example, but I have seen some signs of him being a bit more vocal, the first one was getting ejected in Seattle last year. He wants to win, which people don’t seem to realize.

All he did is say exactly what I was thinking. I know it was on the road, but losing 3 in a row to the Pirates is terrible. I hope they all get a little mad about it.

BREAKING NEWS: Reyes has slight hamstring tear

Believe it or not, this injury occurred during the extended spring training game he just played in and is separate and apart from the calf injury. Expect him to be out past the All-Star break.

Time for Omar to make a bold move. The Phillies are hot right now and I don’t think we have the luxury of waiting until the trade deadline for “the best deal.” We definitely need one or two big thumpers.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
