Livan saves the day.

Mets 7 Nats O.

The Mets were in big trouble. John Maine had a bad day aganist the Nats on Saturday. They needed a shot in the arm after yesterday game a dayoff would come and then the Phillies are here. The Mets needed to win this game and the fifth starter was pitching today. Well after the game was over Mets 7 Nats 0 all was well again. The reason was Livan Hernandez . He pitched shutout ball for seven innings and helped the Mets take the series from the Nats.

The fifth starter usually doesn't do to well but all Livan has done is win. His record is 5-1 and next to Johan Santana he has been great. When the Mets first signed him even I said please not Livan. I didn't know how much he had left in the tank and could he help this team win. Well I must admit not only has he helped the Mets win,he has plenty in the tank. Livan saved the day yesterday and now the Mets can follow this up by beating the Phillies.

So if the Mets win the division and go far in the playoffs Livan Hernandez will be one of the major reasons, so even I must admit That not only did Livan saved the day. He just might help Johan and save the season.

This might be true

I think there is a “free all-you-can-eat” bonus clause in Livan’s contract if the team makes the playoffs. Livan also gets to choose the restaurant.

I think he means “major” as a proportion of total team weight.

Let me get this straight..

“not only did Livan saved the day. He just might help Johan and save the season.”

Is he saying that Livan will be like Randy Quaid in Independence Day? Saving the day for all humans. That would be cool.

Everyone is high on Livan

He’s been pitching well. He fields his position great and is not too shabby with the bat.

BUT

If you look at his splits the last couple years June and July have been the months where he starts to falter
2006-2008
June 6.73 ERA op B.A. .351.
July 6.36 ERA op BA .331

Career wise he has had much more success in the summer months than these numbers suggest, but that was a younger, better stuff Livan.

I’m loving Livan out there for us, but realistically he will probably come back to earth over the summer and relying on him for to much longer may get us into trouble.

3 was good, there’s a “life simulation” mission that’s awesome and was probably the highlight of the game for me. But the enemies, terrian, NPCs started getting a bit repeative, though blowing a dudes leg off in slow mo never got repeative.

Don't get me wrong

Fallout 3 is awesome. The scope of the game is mind boggling, and its a tremendous achievement and potentially a huge watermark on the timeline of gaming. But at the same time, as a huge Fallout nerd from the mid-90s, it definitely lacked some of the flavor that made the originals great. It seemed like they tried almost too hard to grey the ethics of the game. In the originals, if you did something stupid or evil or even good or helpful, it would have a direct consequence in the game, like an important character would die and you’d have to get lucky or find some weird backdoor to complete your missions. Example: In Fallout 2, a slightly shady NPC gives you a quest to deliver a brief case to a mob boss for doing something illegal. You have the option of trying to blackmail him into giving you a larger reward. If you do so, he will refuse, but allow you to proceed with the quest anyway. But when you deliver the brief case, now there is a note included telling the mob boss to gun you down after the delivery, and that you weren’t to be trusted, and unless you were a ridiculously high level, you were screwed. In this one, it pretty much just shifts your discrete Karma meter, which whether or not you can see it, is a discrete meter. Sweet, I got an awesome title for giving beggars money and doing helpful things. Plus, the NPCs were flat. I’d rather one awesome character at the Brotherhood of Steel than 20 different named Scribe NPCs. A lot of the quests felt uninspired and the tactical elements of combat were watered down (though the latter here was probably somewhat unavoidable).

Honestly, I’m super excited for New Vegas. Obsidian, the company that the development was licensed to, is essentially 80% former Black Isle employees, the now defunct developer responsible for the first two Fallouts. Supposedly, the engine will be the same, but if a return to the West Coast locale is any indicator that Obsidian is being given creative freedom, they’ll have a chance to mix all the great things Bethesda did with all the great things Black Isle did back in the day.

If you can stand slow moving games and crappy isometric style graphics

They’re worth playing. Its tough now, lol, I’ll freely admit that. I tried to play through them again to prime myself for Fallout 3’s release, and at times it was a bit grueling. But there’s a level of atmosphere in them that definitely gets missed in the new one. The humor is much sharper, the main story quite a bit longer (and makes quite a bit more sense). Its blend of sci-fi RPG and satire is more seamless. And the tactical combat makes the V.A.T.S. in Fallout 3 seem almost like a gimmick to satisfy old-school fans like me, though it is pretty awesome in F3.

Fallout

I do love the original games. Honestly, I don’t connect FO3 with the original games too much as the tone is very different in many respects. As a game itself, I LOVE FO3. At the same time, I was a huge fan of Morrowind and Oblivion and, in many ways, consider this more a sequel to those games (in a different world, obviously).

I’ve played the Alaska and Pittsburgh expansions and I’m just starting the new one. Seems very buggy so far though.

Am I considered a troll because I dont agree with the majority. Give me a break, and this is why Im so embarressed by Met fans. The only thing I ever posted was that the Mets should get an outfielder like Jermaine Dye. How is that trolling around? Should I post how great Daniel Murphy or Angel Pagan is?!?
As for squid92. Im not the tool, you are. I dont agree with everything the Mets say, which you do. So grow a pair.
As for metsfan07. No he is retired. My point is that the Todd Ziele and Edgardo Alfonzo players are gone. Players who played hard every night. Now the teams filled with guys like Reyes who jump around like fools making a joke out of themselves. And im sick of it. Win something before you show up an opponent like that. Papelbon can jump like a bafoon as long as he keeps winning World Titles.(Even so I still think its childish) I cant say I love the team anymore like I had in the 70s through about 2004.

They’re called facts. We like them. They’re much better than regurgitated media talking points about how one of the best players in the game at his position is a loser because he’s a little hyperactive on the bench. We don’t take kindly to that kind of thing.

And regardless

If you ran a team of 13 Jose Reyeses and an average pitching staff, I’d take that team over any current MLB team. You can’t blame one single player when 25 fail. Reyes has been worth as many wins as any SS in the game in each of the last three years. Who cares if he’s hyperactive? Its his personality. Just like Jimmy Rollins personality is one of exaltation and hypocrisy, doing things like mimicking Ricky Henderson’s slow HR trot. THAT is showmanship. What Reyes has is just A.D.D. But obviously, because Jimmy’s got a ring on his finger, I guess he’s automatically a better player.

Well Jimmy is a former MVP

so give him credit there. Jimmy has stolen 35-40+ bases numerous times. Which is a good number, is it 60 no. However does Reyes have Rollins power? no. Jimmy Rollins gets the edge defensivley too. Reyes is a good fielder, but Rollins is better.

Excuse me?

Jose Reyes has considerably better power than Jimmy did when he was 26. Plus he steals more bases. Plus he gets on base at a better clip. And don’t mind me if I don’t give Jimmy Credit for winning a BBWAA award on the back of a Joe Morgan propaganda campaign. There were at least two or three players more deserving of that award in 2007, and one of them played on the Mets, and wasn’t Jose Reyes.

The same one who is hitting like .220?

It would behoove you, when comparing two players of different ages, too look at their career paths and development. Jose Reyes is 26 right now. He has more power than Jimmy did when he was 26. In 2007, Jimmy Rollins was 29 when he won the MVP. Where do you think Reyes will be when he’s 29? Reyes clearly has a head start on Jimmy to this point. So if Jose Reyes wins an MVP in 2011 and the Mets win the World Series in 2012, would Jose all of a sudden be a good player because he’s earned some hardware? Will he be a worse player until that happens? What happens if the Mets win a World Series and Reyes has a terrible year? Does that earn Jose a pass on the antics because 24 other guys picked him up?

Also, use the reply button unless you want to draw more ire from posters here than you already do.

You know what else is stats

Team wins and losses. They are built from all these little things that happen in the game, from which we derive other stats, which can help us evaluate a players usefulness, and in some cases, even make predictions about their future usefulness. You know what team uses lots and lots of stats? Your precious Papelboner Red Sox. It wasn’t Papelbon who “earned the right” to do fist pumps. It was Bill James.

well

Adam Dunn definitely has some nice wOBAs, but .399, .383 and .401 in ‘07, ’08 and ’09, good as they are, must be compared to other left fielders. His fielding is awful (then again so is this year’s stuf lf, ibanez, who has leapt to major positive uzr somehow, i guess in Citizen’s bandbox).

You got Crawford out there, usually way behind in wOBA, not this year and a far better fielder. Braun, great hitter/butcher, carlos lee, not quite the wOBA, but not as mucha butcher, Soriano, homers and no walks, but actually not an awful lf, Jay Bay, manny, etc. You are supposed to slug out there, and Dunn does, but the slob aint’ astronomical with the low average at times AND his fielding is, as aforesaid…

Understanding the anger at American Mr. Hockey, but so, he doesn’t like Reyes antics. That rubs a lot of people wrong.

I don’t mind it. And Reyes IS a good player. He could stand to get even better, good as he is.

His fielding, small sample, did regress. His uzr last year was 0. this year this far minus 1.4. Rollins in 2007/08 and 09? 6.6, 12.8, 2.9.

Reyes is outhitting Rollins this year. in 2007, though, the wOBA was .378 Rollins, .346 reyes. Last year .357 Rollins, .366 reyes. Yeah, overall, last few years, reyes, and he is younger, but Rollins was a fine player last few years, and if you averaged out last 2, maybe better (I know certain WAR stats would say no, Reyes 5.6 and 5.6 in 2007 and 2008, Rllins 6.8 and 3.9).

Hanley ramirez, much better hitter. .411, .405 and .398 wOBAs last 3 years. And not the butcher he was in the field. -.7 last year, =1.2 this year.

Old man Jeter. uzr -.5 last year. +1.5 this year. wOBA .377 this year. he has played better this year.

Yunel Escobar, .352 this year, -1.2 uzr, both slightly ahead of reyes. not suggesting I’d take either one. Ryan Theriot even, better uzr last year and this year, wOBA same this year.

Cristen Guzman, bit of a butcher, better wOBA at .350 this year (he really became a somewhat decent hitting ss). Adrsubal cabrera, 1.7 uzr, .362 wOBA this year.

Yeah, Reyes is hurt. yes he is young. very exciting player. very good over last 3 years. he Ramirez and Rollins all in same division. makes for fun comparisons.

Go back and look at Allan trammell’s wOBA in ‘83-’87, Ripken around that time, Yount in the early ’80s. Now those were some mashing shortstops some years. And anecdotally, some good fielding, some gold gloves in there.

I like reyes. I still wish he was better. I know it doesn’t mean much, but i like it when guys make the smart play, take out the guy at second like Rollins last night. i have seen Jose do that. he sometimes spaces. He more than makes up for it, but he could definitely improve, and if healthy he likely will.

But if his personality bothers someone, let it go.

I am always wanting any player to try to improve some aspect of his game. That reyes is a very good player, sometimes great, no doubt. Everyone has something to improve.

Arnott is a nice player, however he is nowhere near a superstar.
Arnott had a nice run with NJ EDM among others. However, last year in the playoffs against Detroit he absolutley disappered.
Pekka Rinne and Shea Weber are the two bright spots for NSH.
Rinne’s numbers are comprable to Mason’s and other top teir goalies, however Rinne does not get the recognition due to him playing in Nashville.
Weber is a solid defender with a cannon for a shot.

if I see something that my teams do that I do not agree with than I say something

Is that what you did though? What you did was the equivalent of walking into a room full of Mets fans and saying, “Hey I used to be just like you, but now I hate the team you root for and all of the players on the team, save John Maine. Oh, and hey you know that other New York team that most of you despise, I going to cheer for them now.”
What did you expect most of us to say to that? “Come on in and lets talk baseball.” or “Yeah, well don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.” I’m sure most around here are saying the later. Disagreeing with this organization is something that comes with the territory for Mets fans. Mainly because they do dumb shit on a daily basis. We stick with the team despite their short comings because we cheer for the organization, we don’t bail on them.

I don’t think you are a troll as others have called you, and some of what you say I agree with, like not blindly following stats to run your team. I think the manager has to follow his gut and go against the grain every now and then. When Willie used Cliff Floyd to pinch hit in the ‘06 NLCS and let him swing away rather then bunt, I thought it was the right call even though Uncle Cliffy struck out. That said Jerry Manuel is a dope with the dumb stuff he does on a per game basis. Jerry’s piss poor coaching isn’t going to drive me to cheer for the Yankees however. And there in lies your issue. You will get nothing but a cold shoulder around here no matter how anything you write makes sense, because you will always be the guy who thinks he is too good for the Mets and by extension us as fans. Sorry, that is just the impression I get.

You may not be a troll

But your arguments are laden with baseless accusations and judgments. You’ve called me an organizational apologist a number of times. Typically, I don’t even bother responding to this because its such a joke. I’ve done fanposts about how dumb I think Jerry is. I’ve repeatedly called Omar one of the worst problem solvers in a professional sports FO. You also say things about Jose Reyes’s “Baseball IQ,” and criticize statistics you don’t even understand. I’m one of the more middle-of-the-road stat guys here. But when people start throwing judgments around with no real inferential basis, I’ll be the first to throw it back in their face with a quick fact check on fangraphs or something. If you can create a baseball IQ test and somehow administer it to Jose, or even some sort of vague criteria that you can apply to Reyes’s specific behavior, maybe I’ll give you some creativity points. But statements like this are just pseudo-clever talking points, not actual arguments.

i gotta say

reyes does run into outs foolishly, or not run, or swing from his heels at times when he gets into a schneid. Lots of guys brain lock and make mistakes. But I do agree he doesn’t play smart at times.

He is talented as all get out, no doubt and overall his stat line is good. He could be better. Mets have got much bigger problems than his occasional space out.

Don’t know why, but I have seen few teams make this many base running gaffes. I know that doesn’t sit well with a lot of people, because Jerry’s f ups, Omar’s failure to surround the core with mere replacement level guys, etc., are more egregious. Nevertheless. Like chicken soup in reverse, the screw ups on the base paths don’t help. I can’t even watch every game and there are so many that I have seen, Church missing third, wright thrown out at third (a few in that game), reyes at third, or not running, fmart not running, carlos not sliding, sheff, reyes not running one out, castillo running back on emil brown’s hit.

Yeah they have only 2 good hitters right now. All the more reason the vapor lock is inexcusable. And every team f’s up. These guys no doubt to me have a special knack.

Actually, I HAVE seen more than a few teams make baserunning mistakes.

And wobatus, I sorta hate to choose you here, but you can’t really say you see few teams do that, because you only watch the Mets on a regular basis. So how can you honestly make that judgment?

by squid92 on Jun 12, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here I go with some stats again

BP has a good set of team baserunning stats. According to them, the Mets have actually been about +3.09 EqBRR (Equivalent Base Running Runs) above average so far this season. That’s good for seventh in baseball and fourth in the NL.

They even break it down into different types of Base Running Runs. For example, in the Mets case, this apparent strength is most prominently derived from their EqSBR (Equivalent Stolen Base Runs), which sits at +2.65. That is good for third in baseball and first in the NL by a ridiculous margin of 1.32 runs over the Pirates.

The problem with the Mets baserunning, however, is this:

They are great at earning runs with SBs and Sac-Flys (EqAAR, Equivalent Air Advancement Run, +1.46 for the Mets). This is a good thing. However, look at EqGBR and EqOAR (Ground Advancement and Out advancement). At 0.01 and 1.80 respectively, this is what Jerry has earned himself with all the bunting. This amounts to very little, especially relative to what he might have earned had he restricted himself from bunting with position players. Those wouldn’t be baserunning runs, they’d be hitting runs. And this brings us to the other problem.

The one area the Mets are negative in is EqHAR (Hit Advancement Runs). This sits at -2.82, 25th in baseball and 14th in the NL. Razor Shines and ill conceived attempts at “taking the extra base” have cost the Mets more runs than they have earned themselves with their basestealing game. So all they have left are sac-flys, and Jerry’s bunting obsession, the latter of which is probably a detriment to overall run production anyway.

However, that’s an indictment of the coaching staff as much as the players, since sac bunting and EqHAR have a decent amount to do with Jerry and Shines. As far as the actual quality of the baserunners themselves, they seem to do a pretty good job.

See Mr. Hockey, just for you. I used stats to describe how the Mets baserunning has been good, but also flawed, and criticized the coaching staff in the process.

I was wrong about one thing. EqOAR is actually Other Advancmenet Runs, so its things like wild pitches and earning balks and such, not Outs Advancement Runs.

Still, this doesn’t change the point really at all.

I have watched the Mets

over 40 years, Yankees as well, Cubs games, Braves games, games of the week…but it may be I am misrememberin’, early alzheimers onset. I didn’t say, however, I never see teams make mistakes. I specifically wrote “I have seen FEW teams make THIS many” emphasis added, and later “every team f’s up.” I am talking about the frequency.

I watched nearly every game of ’73, ’86, ’88, ’00, ’01, trust me, as time goes on it gets worse, but that is true of all teams. Almost no one styled a homer in the ’70s, or what turned into a long single.

But I don’t get the fascination with saying they don’t do it. Catsmeat said something about being at one of the DC games and being a little like whoa (I forget the exact quotation) with the running gaffes to 3rd there. Not that he harped on it. It is true, every team makes mistakes.

But, there are sins of omission and sins of commission, largely, these have been the latter, at least insofar as things like trying to take an extra base, and even the omissions, Churchie not touching third, Fernando not running a pop up, Jose not busting out on a fly, seemed more like a bit of mental freeze than laziness. Shit happens, brief moments in an intense physical situation.

Anyway, you’ll have to believe me, or not. I don’t have stats for how many times players didn’t bust it in ‘73, or how many times they didn’t just get thrown out, but got thrown out by a mile. I do know Marv Throneberry made some egregious baserunning gaffes (before my time), that Cleon Jones got shown up by Hodges for lazing after a ball in the outfield, and I saw players get nailed many times.

And Meddler has some stats below that address this stuff far more concretely. Although it is hard to fault Shines for stuff like getting tossed out trying for third, as he has little to do with runners rounding second. But yeah, plays at the plate. And there aren’t stats in there for not busting it outta the box either (and I acknowledge that problem isn’t as much a problem anymore).

And the Mets lead the league in HOBAR (Home Runs on Balls Reviewed), which I am sure has something to do with their respectful umpire demeanor. :)

Anyway, don’t get me wrong, I am not the type to suggest trading wright, reyes or beltran for the mere change of atmosphere.

ya know what

that was a waste of time. F’it. The sainted yankees dropped flyballs and made baserunning gaffes last night. bring on those losers.

Well, we know one thing, one of these two teams will miraculously come out of this series suddenly with the Big Mo, or cured of their lack of moxie, what have you, in the everchanging tabloid assessment.

I will look at it this way, the Mets battled to some close calls against the Phils. And no matter what larry brooks says, 8 guys on the dl is a valid excuse, although doing that and having Jerry manage with one brain tied behind his back is a bit much of a handicap.

I'm pickin up what you're layin down

I just don’t like criticizing guys who for something they’ve been recognized as among the best in the biz at, which is pretty much Reyes and Beltran and baserunning. I get the laziness argument, its certainly relevant, and I think the EqHAR dip is a result of both this fact and the over-aggressiveness of some other players (Wright, Murphy getting thrown out at third). This is on the players, and I shouldn’t make excuses for them. But I also do think its on the coaching staff, especially if its a team-wide issue. There’s plenty to like about what this team is capable of and what they do on the basepaths, but they could probably be much better than they are.

Ok, here I go with another example.

Today, I was watching the Cubs-Twins game, and Milton Bradley threw the ball into the stands with one out remaining, costing his team a run and moving a runner from 1st to 3rd. It isn’t a baserunning mistake, but it’s important for us fans to try to remember that our team isn’t the only one that makes mistakes.

centerpede deserves better comments tho

it is a shame that after all the effort he put into his post that we cant rise up a troll feeding shouting match.

Nooooooooooo,

Ken you were comment 102. I thought we were trying to give this post 101 comments to signify its greatness. But, now we blew it. I hope you’re happy.

I was thinking the same thing

of course, now the only solution is to keep going till we get to 202

signs point to yes

But even if The Kenyan Mr. Water Polo continues on this vigorous pace and remains unbanned, let me say right now, I don’t have the patience to go for 1oo1 posts.

Is it the one with the Torino "interference" call?

Where it was people bashing the rule? i think that broke 200.

by meigs1414 on Jun 12, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was an absurd thread

297 comments! Most of them were like this:

Dude 1: “I was an umpire, and the rule book says Torino’s play was clean”
Dude 2: “I was an umpire, and the rule book says Torino’s play was illegal”
Dude 1: “no”
Dude 2: “yes”
Dude 1: “no”
Dude 2: “yes, and I can do this all night”
Dude 1: “so can I”

and so on

The question wasn't even whether it was legal.

We said it was bush league, which is basically impossible to argue.
