The Mets top pick this year, Matz stands 6'3" and comes out of Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, NY. The link is a scouting video, where Matz throws what appears to be exclusively fastballs, ranging from 88-90 MPH. I know virtually nothing about young Mr. Matz. However, a decent sized lefty High School arm who can touch 90, plenty intriguing for a late second round pick.

As per a few commentors from the chat box

at http://metsprospecthub.blogspot.com/, including the admin Tejesh, he’s a tall, lanky guy with a solid fastball that sits 88-92 and can touch 94. He’s been toying with a slider but as with many HSers beyond the first round, doesn’t have much of a secondary repertoire as of yet. Scouts figure he will probably add a touch of velocity, and the instant comp that comes to mind here is Jonathan Niese. He may wind up throwing a bit harder than Niese, but its impossible to know if he’ll ever have a plus second pitch the way Niese does now.

a couple Stephen Matz writeups
#115 STEPHEN MATZ, LHP, MELVILLE HS, SETAUKET, N.Y.
The consensus top prep pitching prospect in the Northeast, Matz offers plenty of projection as well as good present stuff. For most of the spring, Matz sat in the 89-91 mph range, but he routinely ran his fastball up to 93-94, and the pitch has some glove-side life. Scouts particularly like the way he attacks hitters inside with his heater. He also shows a solid-average changeup with good deception that sometimes rates as plus. He began throwing a slider midway through the season, but most scouts prefer his 73-75 mph three-quarters curveball, which flashes average to plus but more often rates as a below-average offering at this stage. Matz has a big, projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, but there are some questions about his durability because he had trouble staying healthy for a full season until this year. He also needs to work on his delivery, as he tends to cut himself off and has a head jerk. There is some risk with Matz, but he has enough upside that some team is very likely to take him in the top three rounds and buy him out of a commitment to Coastal Carolina.

Steven Matz: The LHP out of Ward Melville High School (East Setauket, NY) has produced “average” velocity consistently ranging from 88-92, but has touched 94 and scouts believe he can get stronger and thus throw faster. His curveball is projected to be above-average due to good spin and arm speed and he’s also thrown a change-up on occassion, but with little consistency. Matz will be heading to Coastal Carolina.

ESPN.com's Keith Law had these guys at #47 and #67 overall

If you like Law, these guys sound like great value.

Apparently Shields is a SS with an odd swing who may end up at 2b – sounds like Reese Havens! How’s that for a snap judgment based on almost no information?

I'm sure this guy is pretty good.

I just feel we might have been able to get better value? But hey, it’s the MLB draft. It’s all a crapshoot anyway.

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
In order to raise extra capital, the Mets have explored signing Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training (replete with curiously high uniform number).
