David Wright vs John Franco?
I have read this story in a couple places so i figured i would post it. Media sure likes to try and make a big story out of nothing in my opinion.
But does anyone agree with Johnny Franco, is it time for David to step up and take charge of the clubhouse? I think the obvious answer would be yes. But I haven't seen it yet..

I've seen it
He’s the one that goes out to the mound when the pitcher needs calming.
He’s the one who gave Big PELF a pep talk after his last start.
He’s the one doin the things needed, getting on base, driving in runs.
You will never know what it is like in the Mets clubhouse, even the media doesn’t know. Wright seems to have take ahold of the leadership role on the field and that’s what matters.
"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

Exactly
I don’t know what more people want from him. He’ll probably only get the proper respect if he’s officially named Captain so the media and announcers can always refer to him as “The Captain,” as they do to Jeter, and pretend that it means something.

ha
That’s much more meaningful if your teammates call you that on their own because of your friendship and leadership rather than a doddering old billionaire proclaiming you the “Captain” from his throne room in the luxury skybox so he can sell a few more jerseys at the pro shop. HS and college teams have a vote for their captains.
Besides, this isn’t Iran. If us fans want to call him the Captain, it’s a free country. (And I suspect that would really piss off Yankee fan btw, so I think it’s a good idea.)

Also have you noticed he hasn't had hair in about a year?
so much leadership he doesn’t want to look better than the other players

I love Johnny Franco, one of my favorite Mets of all time.
That said, he should keep his freaking trap shut.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

That is one of the funniest things I have ever read.

can we invite that guy to post a FanPost now and then?
He’d be way better than any of our past Scotterpedes.

John Franco
has no credibility.
Winning Seasons for the Mets w/ J. Franco on the Roster:
1990, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001.
Was he really the leader (despite a dumb “C” on his chest) for any of those teams? I didnt think so.

It's easy to take credit for being a "captain" or "leader"
when your lineup features Mike Piazza, John Olerud, Edgardo Alfonzo, and Robin Ventura.

didn't franco
insist that they run kazmir outta town?
by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's the urban legend
Something about Franco and Al Leiter demanding Kazmir turn the music down on his ghetto blaster boombox. I’m not sure how much that affected the decision to trade him, but who knows?

looks like
Kazmir was the original gangsta.
"I told him the next time he does that, I’m going to get my blade out and cut him, right on the field. Hey, I’m a gangsta now. You go gangsta on me, I’m gonna have to get you now."

I heard rumors
that they went to management and said they didn’t like the kid, he didn’t respect the vets, etc.

Pretty much
exactly my point.
He came over to a pretty loaded 1990 team, then the team sucked for 6 years (during which he was probably one of the best players), then the team was good for five years (some of which he wasnt even the closer for), then the team sucked again.
But it was clearly his leadership, so he can criticize the current mets for lack of leadership.

I have a theory
That a certain amount of success in this world ruins people’s perspective, lulling them into believing that they were better than they were and that the people they’re now lecturing about how to be are worse than they in fact are. I call it the Friedman theory — a guy who was a strong reporter gains a certain amount of success and position, and becomes an entirely worthless gasbag.
(It’s a broadbrush theory. It has some holes.)

Hasn't this always been a criticism of the Mets?
Even Piazza was sometimes killed for not being a ‘rah-rah’ guy.
Franco was a good pitcher for the Mets, but as a pseudo-media dude in New York, he has to pray at the altar of Derek Jeter and His Four Rings. I’ll give him a pass here, but kudos to David for getting angry about this.
