Yes

but any chance I get to use this Mike Pelfrey picture, I’ll take. Plus I’m not really celebrating, I just think that because of Pelfrey’s ERA and all the bad luck to the team, his performance is getting overlooked, so the picture started out without the quote, but I threw it in. It’s good to recognize something good that’s happening on a major league level.

But more importantly

It’s good to recognize good pictures like this one.

He’s got a terrible K/BB ratio.

by Salz on Jul 13, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

Correction

He had a terrible K/BB (6/9) in April. Since then, it may not be anything too special, but it is 45/17, which much more tolerable looking than his season line, especially for a guy getting a nice level of groundballs. If he were to match the last two and a half months the rest of the way he’d finish with 31 starts, 182 IP, and a 96/53 K/BB, or 1.81, a tad higher than it was last year, when he also had a rough first month.

imagine him with a legit secondary pitch

he would be a beast – please please please let him figure it out

There's always some extra development to watch out for in those big guys

Sickels made the point about Moviel that sometimes those really, really big guys with lots of parts to move around just never entirely figure out their bodies. Sometimes it takes them longer too, though, and sometimes it never comes together.

According to Fan Graphs

his 2009 wSL/C (slider runs above average per 100 sliders) is 0.93 compared with -1.92 in 2008.

He’s throwing the same amount of them (almost 13%) but I recall anecdotally a lot more of them thrown for strikes and strikeouts. I wonder if this is actually true.

by TheBigStapler on Jul 14, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Cool pic. This will definately solidify Pelf getting injured in the next few weeks

He’s been decent, but he’s no number 2 starter right now. His balk thing troubles me and he’s been way too inconsistent this year. He’s pitched like a number 3-4 starter.

by Rigsay on Jul 13, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

nice GB%

didn’t realize pelf’s GB percentage was up this year. that’s reassuring considering his inconsistency in 09. hopefully he stops giving up the big inning and has a monster second half.

by englishgrey on Jul 13, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

He's already 1.5 WAR

Quietly, Pelfrey is having a good season. It’s not very glamorous but groundball pitchers eat up a lot of innings, which is underrated. We also know he’s capable of working efficiently through complete games. We have yet to see his best performances, I think.

NOM NOM NOM GROUND BALLS

(Mo thinks assumes this means balls made out of ground beef)

by JoshNY on Jul 13, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Do you think

Mo looks so happy in this picture because he thinks his bat is a giant corn dog covered in chocolate?

Obviously he's a sinker baller

But dude has given up a grand total of 12 XBH’s in his last 12 starts. But he’s been “struggling”, a “disappointment” and “hasn’t taken the next step in his development”.

A few more strikeouts would be nice. If he ever gets that K/9 to around 6.00 (he’d have to refine his change-up for this to happen), he’d be an absolute beast and a borderline ace.

If this is your idea of a cheesecake (pun intended) photo...

…you’d better be under 17 years old. If not, I strongly recommend that you Google the phrase, “age of consent.”

And isn’t she in that creepy Nick show with the aerobics guy and the puppets that my daughter liked when she was 3?

by madisonmetsfan on Jul 14, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, I believe so. My niece watches it too.

All I know is there was a funny CollegeHumor mashup video with her in it. The person who made that is the one who should get Googling “age of consent”.

Joe should make one of these for Niese

Since Verducci named him as a candidate as well.

by All Shook Down on Jul 21, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

Niese?

Don’t you mean Fernando Nieve? If there was a guy named Niese pitching for us in the minors, surely we’d have promoted him by now.

I think you're forgetting the "n" at the end

Surely we’re referring toe Erick Niesen here, right?

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
