Lets Play Mets GM II
With all the Halladay rumors and the Mets seemingly nowhere to be found I wanted to bring up a hypothetical situation for us to chew on. The Jays seem to be asking for major league ready prospects and a player or two already up in the bigs. I think if the Mets ever got involved it would take something like Pelfrey, Parnell, and two of our top 5 prospects. If that was on the table do you hang up the phone? Or what could be another package?

I don't like having to give up Pelfrey
We give him up and the back end of our rotation is just as bad as it is now.
"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran
true however
the front end improves greatly.

I have no problem giving up Pelfrey in the right deal (i.e.- he shouldn't be "untouchable")...
But I’d rather have Big Pelf, Flores, Parnell, F! and a locked up FA pitcher in the offseason than 45 starts of Halliday and another potential Johan-like contract (if we were lucky).
I’d love having him and if we could pull a Johan-like deal (never happening), I would do it quite quickly. If they keep holding him till the offseason or next year’s deadline (which would be retarded) and the cost went down, I would totally give him a serious look.

yeah
I think i would hold onto him but I guess they feel they are rebuilding and could get some fantastic prospects. Plus maybe they can get out of that God awful Vernon Wells contract.

I just don't think Halladay is the right guy to target.
The Mets offense isn’t good enough to think that adding another ace would take them even to the wild card. Realistically, the Mets need to look for a guy that will give some improvement now, but still be around for the next several seasons.

No
I’m not saying Halladay isn’t worth it, but this team has no business getting 100 years older.
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
Pelfrey is a 3 WAR pitcher
Pelfrey is 25 and under control for another three seasons and is relatively inexpensive. Halladay is 32 and under contract through next season and gets paid a ton more.
Halladay, based on projections for a full season, would only net the Mets three wins. Sure, there’s every chance that a league switch will help him surpass those projections, but that’s no sure thing. The Mets would be better served minding their future and picking up those wins (and more) by building a real team.
If the Mets are going to use their top prospects in a trade
I really don’t want to see them go for a player in his 30’s who is approaching free agency. I’d rather they move for Ian Snell or Carmona, both of whom can probably be had for next to nothing. Save your prospects both now and in the offseason, allowing them to actually build up some depth.

The Mets should be selling old players with short contracts and picking up young talent
Halladay does not fit that plan.
Who do the Mets have to sell?
Sheffield? Maybe Feliz? Other than that, they really don’t have any value to sell. Those guys won’t net much either, and I think I’d be inclined to hang onto Feliz.

Who's Feliz?
All of these players should be available to contending teams in exchange for the right mix of youngsters, since they are either replaceable or not part of the team’s long-term plans or both. Listed in order of (my opinion of) descending trade value:
- Livan
- Sheffield
- Castillo
- Schneider, Santos, any other catcher you want
- Cora
- Tatis
- Pagan, Reed, other 4th/5th-OF types
Dealing at least a handful of these guys should bring back at least a bit of depth to the farm system for next year and wouldn’t compromise the Mets’ ability to contend in 2010 and beyond.

Livan has no value
Castillo has negative value
Santos has no value
Cora has no value
Tatis has no value
Pagan has no value
Reed has no value
Most GM’s actually have replacement level players in AAA, Sheff and maybe Schnieder are the only guys there with even minimal value

I disagree about Cora and Castillo
-Castillo might have value to a team like the Twins, though at a discounted price.
-Alex Cora would be a good fit for the Mariners, because they’re looking to get more left-handed and improve their 2B defense. Maybe we could get Wladimir Balentien back in a deal. He’s always hit for a ton of power in the minors.

Without eating a good chunk of that contract, I can't see anyone taking him.
Even if their was a taker, they wouldn’t give us anything but organizational filler. Cora could find a home on most teams, but the Mets aren’t getting a guy like Balentin for him. If they get a prospect with his talent level, the kid will be years away.

I would look at moving Castillo
He’s been great the last few weeks and if we throw in say $5 mil, a contender could have a solid veteran 2nd baseman for $3.5 million/year for the next 2.

Unfortunately, their system isn't exactly brimming with prospects.

Err?
The Giants system isn’t brimming with talent?
Are you sure about that?
Its easily one of the top 5 if not top 3 systems in MLB:
Bumgarner, Posey, Alderson, Angel Villanova, Nick Noonan & Henry Sosa and quite a few more good prospects.
Not that the Mets would get any of them in the afformentioned deals but that isn’t the point I’m making.
Anyway I agree with the idea of getting whatever they can from dealing:
Sheffield, Cora, Castillo, Tatis, Livian, Reed, Pagan, Schneider & Santos.
Seasons done, better luck next year.
They need to make a BIG effort in FA this year though C, 1B, a NO.2 SP & a offensive minded OF as well as filling the holes that any of the above trades would create whilst adding depth.
If Cora could get Balentin that would be ridiculously good… hence its not happening.
At this point it isn’t worth trading for Halladay the cons outweigh the benefits giving up all the prospects for one shot next year… even with Doc playing for the Mets they don’t make the Playoffs this season.
I think he means prospects that we could get for Luis Castillo.

Yea
If I’m the Mets, I’m holding on to guys like Feliz, Marte, Johnson and Henderson
