Lugo for free is hell of a lot better than Angel Berroa
What’s mildly exciting is that it appears that the organization is looking to make wholesale changes.
The San Francisco Giants are looking for a right-handed bat and they’re willing to deal Fred Lewis, an outstanding defensive outfielder with a league average bat (and perhaps a bit more). Perhaps we can flip Frenchy or deal Sheff?

We need to offer Andrew Friedman a truck of money and get Bobby V
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
No to Friedman
He’d be great if he were available, but he has a job. The Wilpons are big boys; they should be able to find their own guy. I just hate the notion of the imperial big market team preying on the gems of the small markets.

So we should bypass a better option because he works in a small market?
Friedman and Jon Daniels are guys who I would readily take over DePo.
Would I not sign Carl Crawford because the Rays couldn’t afford him?

DePo is fine
About Friedman: my first sentence read, “He’d be great if he were available, but he has a job.” You think it’s a good idea to back up an armored car and give up a player(s) for Freidman? I’m a fan of the Mets first and baseball second, but still, I just hate hate hate the idea of doing that. It’s not right to me. Plus it makes the Mets look ridiculous.
How about DePodesta and Minaya: VPs of Baseball “Brainstorming”?

I understand your point, but I don't think it makes us look ridiculous at all.
You can use this same example in any faction of the business world and it happens everyday.
The Lion always eats the wildebeest. It’s time we started acting like the Lion.

Daniels? Really?
He traded Soriano to the Nats for nothing. He traded Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez to the Padres for Adam Eaton. He traded John Danks for Brandon McCarthy.
He did well on the Teixeira deal, okay on the Gagne deal, and came out slightly ahead on the Hamilton-Volquez deal, although the Rangers could’ve used the pitching more than Hamilton’s bat.
Give me DePo.

He built the best Farm System in Baseball...
and has a playoff contending team with exactly HALF the resources that we have.
DePo had issues with Management and got canned after a year and a half (although he did a better job than he was given credit for). I’d prefer the guy on the way up.

We're an evil big market team
it’s time to act like one

To elaborate on my +1
There is no salary cap in baseball. If you are going to have a large budget, then by all means spend it, and don’t get into ethical questions over whether or not what you are doing is “right or wrong.” You are playing within the rules by which you have been given.

Why wouldn't you just try and get Gerry Hunsicker or Dan Feinstein?
Either would probably cost less then Friedman, and both are quite important in the Rays FO.

Because I want your GM

I just mean in general
I try not and name candidates when bashing Omar, because I’ve probably never heard of most of them. But yea, I’d take either of the three.

Cold water on this whole conversation
Omar’s extension kicks in after this season. He’s not going anywhere. Maybe Manuel will get the chop but Omar should get at least through 2010 to sort this mess out.
It's only $4.5 million
That’s tip money

Maybe not
Per Adam Rubin: “But there are rumblings that a three-year extension he received after last year’s September swoon, despite already being under contract for 2009, would not be an impediment to making a change.”
And the Washington Post, for what that’s worth: “The Wilpon’s may not like the idea of eating $5 million, but they probably find that meal a lot more palatable than a few more courses of $140 million roadkill.”
Which is to say, journalists are wondering out aloud now if the Wilpons would eat Minaya’s contract (like a player’s!).
You don't necessarily have to eat it.
Be creative. Reshuffle the organization. Omar’s done some nice things on the player development side and by most accounts, he’s a really good scout. Let his focus be on the empirical side of baseball. Allow him to talk to the media as freely as he has too. People like Omar. I see through a lot of his B.S., yet he still charms the hell out of me.
by All Shook Down on Jul 18, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I could see that happening.
No matter how frustrated the Wilpons are with the progress of the organization, I just can’t see them eating the whole contract. They’ve historically been reluctant to do so, especially with 3 whole years left. But reassigning Omar to another role, like director of scouting? That might make sense. There’s no denying his ability to scout talent, and at least they’d be getting something for their money.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 18, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
That would be asking for trouble
He would have to be a scout in the Dominican or something to avoid any issues with the new GM. He could not be the Tony B. to the new Omar.
Right idea, but that could be a difficult play.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
Yeah, he'd have to be exiled to avoild conflict.
Maybe he goes on a 3-year trip personally scouting Latin prospects.

Those rumblings are pretty vague
and from Mr Rubin I expect nothing less. That’s not to say that ownership isn’t frustrated but I haven’t read any quotes from the Wilpons that would suggest that they’re moving towards firing Minaya. If anything, we’ve heard the opposite from what little communication they put out. Again, the extension was given less than a year ago and they seemed entirely content with Omar despite consecutive disappointing finishes. Right now this is baseless and hopeful speculation.
I guess the only reason
Redding is still on the team is that Minaya is still trying to trade him for some value. Good luck with that!
it's a shame
we could have signed O-dog for his money.Just because he won 10 games for a DOES NOT make him A GOOD PITCHER
by Jadden Hopkins on Jul 18, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
If Redding had just been a minor league contract,
I’d have no problem with the signing. He’d be fine in a role like figgy plays. Omar should be looking to add those type of guys to the AAA roster prior to the season, giving himself more options in case of injury.

If you're not going to go by wins
what can you go by? It’s not like there are stats that actually tell you how a pitcher performed over the course of a season.
10 games for a bad team, that has to tell you something!
