Hey Jerry: Tatis sucks!

I like the guy, but he’s been awful. Do not bat him anywhere but the bottom of the order if he must play.

Why the hell wouldn’t you bat Evans 5th?

Dare I say

I actually like our lineup better!

by TheBigStapler on Jul 2, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

Yup, I think you dare...sans the black hole in the 5th spot.

This and we probably have the pitching advantage in each of the 3 games in Philly.

The AAAA Mets are legit.

We're in a rain delay in Pittsburgh

The radar seems to suggest it might be under an hour. The predictions are that this is the last rain before evening, hopefully we can play the game and GTFO with a win before the rain really starts coming down.

I think quite the opposite

The wet ground will deaden the ball making bunting better!!!

It’s just that the bar is so damned low for him. 7 innings and 4 runs given up is considered masterpiece theatre.

by AnthonyR on Jul 2, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Castillo

That’s why it’s not all about OBP. You have to have the ability to drive in a run. The guy has always been abysmal when it comes to rbis. You can say it’s not his “job”, but dammit it’s everyone’s job.

by David G on Jul 2, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

aren't getting on base and driving a run in that situation basically one and the same?

are you saying it would be bad if Castillo singled or walked there? or that it would be fine if Wright GIDPed because he gets RBIs at other times?

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope

I’m saying he’s less likely to get on base in those situations, because he’s a slap hitter and pitchers will challenge him with strikes in those situations. And he’s less likely to drive in a run with a sac fly, because he doesn’t hit it deep enough.

by David G on Jul 2, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

ah

I had missed this discussion.

Well, how about this: Luis’s career obp with no one on base is .371. You are afding that into his career overall obp. So a slight but meaningless reduction in his obp with risp.

But his slugging with no one on is .366. With men on it is .333. With risp it is .332. I dunno, maybe pitchers still pitch around him because they know a slappy single may result in a run. I had thought this was the crux of the later discussion. Cstillo doesn’t drive in many runs. His ba with risp is .274, his career ba with no one on is .299. He doesn’t hit doubles, and some of hits are infield singles.

Moreover, Castillo percentage of runs driven in times plate appearances with men on base, aside from driving himself in with a homer, is .149. For, David Wright, for example, it is .245.

And yes, flaws with that, and yes, Wright hits into more DPs. I think there are degrees to which you all have points to make.

Luis

Didn’t drive in the run? I can’t believe it. Especially with that great OBP.

by David G on Jul 2, 2009 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

dude, this is tiresome.

RBI-getting is not a separate skill from hitting, and hitting is a thing which Castillo is pretty decent at.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

See that's where your wrong

It is a separate skill, and Luis proves it, because Luis doesn’t have the ability. Look at his career numbers. His RBI totals are always abnormally low per AB, because he has zero pop in his bat. All his RBIs come 1 at a time. He does not have the power to drive in multiple runs with 1 swing. And that’s a huge liability that outweighs OBP. So you’re wrong, sorry.

by David G on Jul 2, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

power hitting ≠ RBI-getting

Yes, Castillo has no power. Duh. This is not the same thing as “driving in runs,” which is the same skill as hitting. I challenge you to produce a single piece of evidence that “RBI-getting” is a predictive category different from hitting ability.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe his RBI totals are low per AB

because for almost his entire career he’s hit at the top of the order in situations where there typically have not been a lot of men on base in front of him

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Another thing you must realize

is that Luis Castillo has predominately been a top of the order hitter. A no. 2 hitter more often than not. And with being a no. 2 hitter, the RBI chances aren’t as great as a 3-4-5-6-7 hitters would be.
You have the leadoff guy who will occasionally get to second but even then, as the No. 2 hitter your job is to move him over for the 3-4 hitters to have a shot at it.
And hitting that high in the lineup means that Castillo has to rely on the 7-8-9-1 hitters to get in scoring position by the time he is up to bat.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jul 2, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

while that is true...

getting on base is, in almost all situations, better than a sacrifice fly. (yes, if it’s a tie game in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on third and nobody out, it’s not as good.) so I just can’t bring myself to see that as a huge problem.

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So what you're saying is that RBI is totally dependent on people getting on base in front of you?

That’s ridiculous. Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols would have driven in just as many runs as they did last year, even if they were on different teams.

Seriously though, why don’t people get that RBI is a crappy stat?

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Jul 2, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

here is something I don't get:

Why are the game threads here so full of WFAN-caller knee-jerkiness? It’s like there’s a whole separate set of users who only/primarily post in AA game threads and don’t get, or don’t agree with, the fact-oriented attitude of the rest of the site.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t really get how this explains (what I perceive to be) the larger share of irrationality in the game threads. But I agree, people like to watch games with other people.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey

it isn’t irrational to say Luis’s skill set isn’t rbi. And you seem to be implying that extra base hitting ability isn’t correlative to rbi. I know, maybe it isn’t being completely articulated.

If a runner is at first, how often will Luis drive him in? If he is at second, and Luis, a lot of his average being infield hits, won’t getb the guy home.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

no, seriously, I am not saying that.

Of course power has (a little) something to do with RBI. You seem to have mistakely understood “AVG” everywhere I wrote “ability to hit”. I’d say “OPS” works better, or whatever more advanced offensive metric you please.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

ok

so power not equaling rbis didn’t mean it had nothing to do with it. OPS is a great stat. I guess if he walks with the bases loaded. :)

It just cannot be gainsaid that Luis is not a big rbi guy, and a lot of that is because yeah, his avergae is ok, but he doesn’t hit a lot of extra base hits and even a fair share of his singles don’t leave the infield.

I know quite well that rbi is team dependent. And that Luis has other attributes.

But you shouldn’t be the self-appointed arbiter of what is rational or irrational, who should post and when. Albeit something is either a fact or it isn’t.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, yes, it most certainly is irrational to discuss RBI as though it were any kind of indicator of an individual hitter’s ability. RBI is a nonsensical, team-dependent stat, not something we should be using as even the roughest gauge of ability or treating like a repeatable, predictive skill — like pitching wins/losses.

by anonymous on Jul 2, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

I know. I have to go back and check but I wasn’t sure Dave G said anything about it not being team dependent. he just said Luis doesn’t drive in runs. Which also can be taken to mean Luis doesn’t have a very high ops.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

well

why are you saying rbi getting (that sounds funny) is just dependent in batting average. that seems to be what you are saying. RBI getting has something to do with extra base hitting ability, no? even a guy at second won’t get driven in by one of Luis’s infield hits.

Am I missing something?

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

you said

driving in runs is the same skill as hitting. and that power did not equal rbis. So what are you saying. So, i am trying to figure out what that means. You don’t need extra base hits to get a runner in from first? An infield hit will score a runner from second? Luis doesn’t homer, nor does he get very many doubles or triples.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Debates

are fun and enjoyable as long as both sides bring a rational set of arguments. But when the other side brings up stat-less claims and say players don’t try ect. ect. just gets on my nerves.

The irrationality is overreacting to the events in the game we are all enjoying watching. Say Murphy droppes a pop up…the fans react with “WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE GIVIN HIM A JOB, WE SHOULDA GOT MANNY”

Whereas on the rest of the site people stop and think before typing.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jul 2, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that its

just that whether you’re a fact-based analysis guy (like most of the regulars here) or you don’t believe in statistical numbers, once the game starts we’re all (theoretically) mets fans, so some of the objective analysis falls by the wayside and its more of a “go mets” or “stinkin’ mets” feeling (I certainly know Im like that).

Also, if you are on this site and don’t feel the fact-oriented additude the rest of the site does, the gamethread is a place where you can comment, about the mets, but the main topic isn’t Alex Cora’s OPS+ or Mike Pelfrey’s FIP.

but I don’t think it can necessarily be taken for granted that it’s a temporary new development; it could also be the cumulative effect of various injuries taking its toll. (In other words, if you were evaluating him as a potential acquisition, I don’t think “if he played 1B like he usually does” is something you should take for granted.

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

True

But I would still take Johnson over Dunn. They’re similar now, Dunn slightly better, but Johnson has “upside” and can be better

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Jul 2, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Certainly a reasonable viewpoint

I mean, I’m not saying he won’t return to being a very good 1B either, it’s just not something a team trading for him should assume will be the case.

I have to go check

Willigham’s UZR.

I was just joking about parns and Dunn. What, someone suggested dealing him for Johnson? I know Derosa was a possibility bandied about.

restarting the trade thread

Willingham? His UZR per 150 in left is -5.4 in his career. Tolerable? Dunn is like -11

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

I mentioned this yesterday but I can't remember where

Could a team trade for Willingham and move him back behind the plate?

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's that big of a move.

We’d give up prospects…is he really that much better than Pagan. He is, but probably not enough to warrant it.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

by AnthonyR on Jul 2, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno

the step up in offense from Pagan (career OPS+ 87) to Willingham (career OPS+ 120) is pretty significant

by JoshNY on Jul 2, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

When we look at trades

They need to be able to play 1st. That is first and foremost.
Second, when checking their production we must look at how they compare how they relate to both Church and Sheffield when it comes to defense and offense.
Third obviously the cost is a huge deal. We have too many young players that have high potential to give up for a 1 or 2 year filler.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

by EMSfan9 on Jul 2, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

they need to be able to play first AND be able to move, because I assume Delgado is coming back.

Willingham, I guess he can play first, but that’s because I assume every immobile outfielder can play a crappy first, but that won’t help. Willingham has played 3 innings of 1st. 5 putouts, no errors. Dunn has played first and cannot play it. He is godawful there.

Willingham is a much better hitter than Pagan. And better than Church, but I may be ignoring that they barely play him against lefties, I’d have to go check his splits. His zips update wOBA is .389 and iso .235. he can hit.

No, he cannot catch anymore, due to his back, I’d wager. maybe in a pinch.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I meant

1st as well as OF so we can find a place for him.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

but I gotta assume better than Dunn.

by wobatus on Jul 2, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

I don’t know if the 3 innings of 1B that Willingham has played are enough to conclude that he wouldn’t also be awful there

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
