Double-A Binghamton, the scout said, is mediocre, and he still shudders at the memory of his visit last season to watch the team’s Class-A affiliate in the Florida State League, the Port St. Lucie Mets, whom he called the worst minor league team he watched all year.

32-32 in the first half and home to Havens, Davis, N!, Veloz, Holt and Mejia most of the season. Obviously, the scout didn’t watch St. Lucie this season.

How often

do we see “anonymous scouts” quoted in these types of columns? I think these “scouts” are just made up, and writers make up quotes from them to mesh with whatever they’re writing. Also, who cares what this guy thinks:

Baseball America ranked the Mets’ farm system 17th among the majors’ 30 clubs, but much of the promising talent – shortstop Wilmer Flores, pitcher Brad Holt (recently promoted to Binghamton), third baseman Jefry Marte – are still in the lower minors.

Do these guys just all copy each others work? Brad Holt, promoted to double A Binghamton is still in the low minors? Didn’t Harper do the same thing?

And why do I have a feeling all these statements made by scouts came from before this season. I want to know the scout that is down on Jenrry Mejia or doesn’t like Havens bat.

From Sam's original riposte:

“Brad Holt, a very attractive lower-level prospect, in the Mets upper-levels…”

Ditto Mejia et al.

Takeaways

1) Pelfrey wasnt at the infamous Jerry Manuel meeting. What? That meeting didnt produce the next game’s win? Oh, meetings have no effect on baseball ability. I forgot.

2) Scout who saw nothing at Buffalo: a) obviously. The mets notoriously fill AAA with old dudes who can come up and be DFA’d with no consequence (see Lamb, Mike); b) he liked Eddie Kunz?

3) I want more: “the Mets Farm system sucks except for these 6 players columns.”

Same article, written by different douchenozzle

This is like the 5th in the last week. You would think that inherant knowledge about the subject in which you are scribing would be a pre-requisite for some of these media mediums. The article immidately loses credibility when the writer obviously knows nothing about the Farm System of the team he is writing about.

I serious think that these national writers just regurgitate the crap that they read in The Post.

Just wait until August when we have everyone back and are looking good…then we’ll read all the “Mets are great and have been through SOOOO much” articles.

Oh, and I think the unnamed scouts in all of these articles are Jim Duquette and Steve Phillips with a dash of Joe Morgan mixed in.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
