Some Radical ideas to Liven (or wink wink, Livan) Up these Meaningless Games

1) Play a volleyball style Defense: After every out, Met players rotate positions. It will add some intrigue when Omir Santos is at short and Frenchy is behind the plate.
2) Players running on every pitch. Regardless of score or count, we just take off. It will be like when the Arena Football wideouts get a running head start at the line of scrimmage.
3) Let’s try and set a modern day record for most games without a homer. Or how about a home run Lottery? If you hit a homer, you are sent to Buffalo, or you get stoned to death by villagers.
4) Let’s set a record for most bunts in a row. It can’t be more than 4 or 5, this is very doable.
5) Our pitchers must throw one eephus pitch every at bat. Livan already does this, so let’s just have all our pitchers do it.
6) Turn games upside down: K-Rod pitches the first inning, followed by Parnell, Feliciano, Stokes, and then the starter takes over in the 4th or 5th. We may not win, but we will blow minds!!!

that’s just too much. Our best prospect for sure, definitely our most major league ready prospect, a still young bullpen arm, and a solid young player for a great pitcher, but an aging pitcher. it doesn’t help us this year, and maybe not that much next year.

Castillo off the bench for a team who needs it.

A lot of folks drop off early

And I’m not really arguing anything except that lack of protection and a bunch of exhibition games can’t turn 30 HR power into 8 HR power. I fear (not argue) that this might be a permanent drop off because Wright’s abilities (contact, power, batting eye) have plummeted across the board for more than half a season. I don’t understand how anyone could dismiss it as a slump or some bogus excuse like protection. Something fundamental is going on.

at least we avoid 10 back. Until tomorrow. When Lannan beats us, and Ollie implodes.

At this point, I'll take it.

And it’s hard to believe there exists a team that is more downtrodden than us.

Looking at the Giants and Braves game

8-3 Atlanta

The Giants sooooooo remind me of the 07 Mets.

I forgot what winning felt like. Except we won on Saturday.

Doesn't really matter at this point

Easy to pull of some wins when you aren’t playing for anything.

Sickening to say that even though it’s still July.

6.5 games out of the WC at worst after tonight

by AnthonyR on Jul 20, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

True

but I think there are too many teams ahead of us.

Milwaukee and Chicago (they are just startin to come around) are gonna be tough to pass.

Don’t see it happening.

Atlanta looks like they are now puttin somethin together to get in the race also. They are creaming San Fran in San Fran 9-3.

by Chickendirt on Jul 20, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

It's in Atlanta, and the Braves suck

Bottom line is, if we can play better than we have been (unlikely) and get some guys back sooner than later (unlikely), we are the best team out of the bunch.

It’s going to take a lot, and I have no expectations, but I can see us making this at least a little interesting.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
