Omar Minaya turns down a deal for Halladay
Omar does have a little sense. The Jays wanted Niese, F!, Parnell and Tejada for the Toronto ace.
EDIT: Minaya also said the Mets aren't interested in Rent-a-players via trade. Halladay out!

As somebody somewhere else pointed out
Since Halladay isn’t going to turn things around for the 2009 Mets, this is essentially a one year rental, and some will argue 6 seasons of F! is more valuable then one of Halladay. And not to nitpick, but it says not Holliday (in reference to the no rent-a-trades), not Halladay.
Minaya also confirmed Niese to replace Nieve. Sigh. Anyone else surprised they didn’t just put Redding into the rotation again?

I know I'm in the minority, but I would have made the deal
A season and a half of the best pitcher in baseball and either 2 draft picks or an extension at the back end. To me, those picks represent Niese and Parnell (who were much lower selections). I’ll trade F! and an SS who will likely never hit enough for him in a second.
It doesn’t save the season by any means, but we are still on life support and I think this move would set us up well for 2010.
You never can tell, but I think time will bear this trade out as being one that should have been made. If his arm falls off next year, we’ll know I was wrong :-)
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
I would have made the deal too
With Halladay, Santana, Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado?, next year, I believe the Mets would be the team to beat.
Jon Niese, w/e with him. He has not impressed me when pitching for the big club, his numbers are nice in the minors but I could care less about the minors.
Parnell is a relief pitcher, Until he develops a good #2 pitch he is tradeable.
F-mart, got to give up something to get something.
Tejada, young raw, who knows.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Yeah, I think that's why I would make the deal.
I’m just not that high on Niese no matter how much everyone wants to shove it down my throat.
Parnell is raw and needs work, but has a great arm, Tejada is all glove and no bat, and F! is (at least in my opinion) a bit of a crapshoot. He could be an All-Star, or he could be Austin Kearns.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
I would have also
When you really break it down, you’re trading a bunch of unproven players who have the “potential” of being good for the best or second best pitcher in the sport. I have gone back and forth about this deal pretty much because i didn’t know what the package would be but now that i look at it, they would set themselves up perfectly for 2010.
Plus whose to say they wouldn’t extend him?
But I am sure we won’t do it, watch the Phils get him for a bag of balls and win the championship.

A part of me likes this trade and dislikes it
I think Parnell was overhyped for that month or so and he is just an average reliever with some heat. Niese, as much as I like him, will never be Roy Halladay. That I know.
So your basically trading F-Mart and Tejada for the best pitcher outside Johan Santana. Santana and Halladay would just be intimidating to teams… its insane.
I'm actually shocked
that Toronto would be willing to take this package. F! hasn’t proven he can stay healthy and Niese is projected as a #3 at best. Of course, it’s Heyman, so who knows.
yea, i've been wondering if this offer was actually made
i can see ricciardi denying this rumor tomorrow

Honestly, if we were 51-41 and we were healthy...
I think the deal would have already been made.

but we are not
and i don’t see Doc coming here

hmmmm
when i first read this, i thought it seemed like too much for halladay. parting with both niese and F! is a lot, especially because Niese has become so much more enticing due to his recent triple-AAA domination.
but the more i think about it, the less outrageous it seems. i think people would have jumped at this trade at the beginning of the year when niese and parnell had lower perceived value.
I'm sorry
but i can’t trade my farm system for a one year rental
by Jadden Hopkins on Jul 20, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions
What farm system?
Parnell is a middling reliever for the big club, Tejada has no place and F! is the great unknown.
If Holt and Mejia where included, I would pass. But they’re not. To me, the only thing that we are losing that is not immidately replaceable is F!
I think that is where the main question resides. Is he good enough to hold up this deal?
Wish I knew the answer.

F!, Tejada and Niese are not the whole farm
Do you think Holt and Mejia are better prospects than Niese? I do.
Tejada plays a position that one of our top players is entrenched in and even if he were traded, I don’t know that he is the guy to take that spot.
F! isn’t the whole farm. Personally, I’d rather have Mejia and Holt in my stable even though Pitching Prospects are far more hit and miss.

Holt and Mejia ARE better than Niese but Niese is the closest to the Major's
in two years slappy is gone and you never know what Tejada can do in two years.and F is voted as our # 1 prospect.Parnell is a piece of crap and i would have no problem trading him for some baseballs.

Omar Minaya is an idiot
Simple as that, and now watch the Phillies get him.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

He is, but not for this.
I would personally do it, but I can also see the other side of it.
Where do the problems that we have now stem from? The fact that we have NO upper level minor leaguers to help us. I can see the hesitation in dealing from a thin system that finally appears to be headed in the right direction.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
nothing
As good as the core is, it’s hard to win if the rest of the team sucks. And also leaves you suspectible to injuries. A trade like this would only make us even more top-heavy.
But the top would be larger
as well as heavier. To take it to the extreme in order to highlight the point, if we could get three more legitimate all-stars for nine prospects, there wouldn’t be a problem of being too top heavy b/c the core would be so large. Unless you’re a Yankee fan who prefers Brosius to A-Rod. This package isn’t stuffed with proven, or even potential, high end talent.
If we were close
you make this trade. But seeing as it is apparently bull and we suck, there is not reason to make it.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
there would still be a problenm
as we couldn’t afford such a large “core” , assuming they were free agent level players with market-level salaries
Payroll and roster construction
Looking at this proposed theoretical trade in another light:
1)Payroll and the luxury-tax threshold: Trading for Halladay now would put the Mets over the threshold, something the Ownership won’t allow.
2)Roster construction for 2010:
Off the books: Delgado, Brian Schneider, Tim Redding, Alex Cora, Fernando Tatis, Putz, Wagner and Ramon Castro
Raises: David Wright, Johan Santana, K-Rod and Reyes
That leaves Omar with less than $ 30m for: 1 or 2 catchers, 1B, LF and arbitration increases (Maine, Feliciano, Green, Frenchy, Reed, Pagan). Trading for Halladay would cut that remaining budget in half.
