Bernazard actually was an okay player

Did not realize that. Hit .300 with 17 homers, 17 steals and 28 dubs in 1986. Does not change the fact that he may be a bit crazy, of course.

Harden, Lackey, Penny, Bedard

Sheets, Myers, Garland, Doug Davis, Marquis, maybe Hudson, maybe Webb

Harden, Hudson, Webb, or Sheets

I think their injury histories may drive down the number of years they are after, and make them relatively good value. Sheets won’t cost a draft pick, and Webb and Hudson would probably get more in arbitration than their options are worth, so they probably won’t either.

Pelf would be selling low. I’d keep young guys like Pelf and let them play…this season isn’t shaping up that well anyway, so we might as well stick with youth

by AnthonyR on Jul 22, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

Pelfrey isn't the problem

The defense behind him is. He’s actually quite dependable, although the last start was an aberration; he gets ground balls, he strikes out 2-4 batters per game, and he doesn’t walk anybody. The defense behind him needs to start converting grounders into outs.

by Cox813 on Jul 22, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

But Pelfrey and Niese haven't been the problem with this team

They are good pitchers who are under team control for another several years, and aren’t in danger of becoming overpaid.

Maine has no trade value right now and is also cheap; if he can come back in the second half and show that he’s healthy and able to be a part of the next good Mets team, he’s worth keeping too. The Mets shoudln’t be looking to trade any pre-arb players until they have to.

Bernazard?

Sorry, I’m stuck with the Nats dopey announcers on Extra Innings…Did SNY say anything interesting about Bernazard during the game?

That's funny

If the Binghampton players had been smart, they have all jumped Bernazard. If there had been any sort of actual physical altercation, he would have to be fired. Plus it would have been hilarious if they beat the crap out of him.

and break his arm so the Mets void the contract. Then Bernazzard should get an extension.

Funny how Kingman was considered a ridiculous strikeout player, but the most he ever struck out in one season was 156. And Wright is on pace for 162 this year.

Epiphany: I'm a moron

Every night I turn on the game, generally unswayed by the previous game’s results. Just because we sucked yesterday, I think to myself, doesn’t mean we’ll suck today. I don’t expect us to be excellent, just to have more variation where sometimes we stink sometimes we don’t.

This team has slowly broken me. We suck pretty much everyday. Non-sucky days are really just random bits of variation, desert oases. At this very moment I can’t think of a good reason to keep watching. Not one. Yet I’m still here. I must be a complete moron.

It was solid

Any decent team should be happy with 3 runs in 7 innings…The fact that we may have the worst offense ever isn’t reason to expect no-hitters every time out. Even the Nats have a lineup of actual major leaguers.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
