I'd like to see Burkhart get an in-game interview with Rubin
while Minaya sits in with Keith and Gary. It’d be like an episode of Springer. Let’s stir things up even more!
I'd like to see Ollie throw

He's gonna be saying that a lot
too bad the damage is already done.
Me thinks he made a mess and Wilpon wants him to clean it up.
Cheer up guys...
3 man booth tonight!
You don't cheer for the Mets. You drink for the Mets.
Adam Rubin needs to be fired immediately, he crossed a line and needs to to go just for ethics reasons
Omar needs to be fired because he is the dumbest General Manager in all of baseball.

And I need the beer for following this team.
by aparkermarshall on Jul 27, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions
eh
Rubin may have been just trying to get a feel for what the VP of Player Development does and what his background needs to be. Omar looks like a beeoch here IMO.
No, he clearly was way too chummy with his subject. He was not objective.
You do NOT ask your subjects for jobs, that is a huge breach of ethics.
by aparkermarshall on Jul 27, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions
+1
Adam Rubin needs a refresher on his failing journalistic ethics. But that in no way excuses any of Omar’s ridiculously unprofessional behavior here.
You're right, Omar should have shut his mouth and brought this up with the Daily News
If he kept his mouth shut he could have gotten Rubin fired as well and it never would have gotten out.
by aparkermarshall on Jul 27, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I need to footnote this.
I’m reading some later stories now — like this one in the Times — and it seems like Rubin is claiming that he never did anything but discuss how someone gets a job with any major league team, and never even inquired about getting a job in the Mets organization — much less “lobbied for” a job in player development specifically. If this is true, Rubin seems in the ethical clear to me. And Omar seems like a fucking liar.
They're already playing that angle in the papers?
WOW!!!
Omar is such toast.
He was ballistic on a reporter and LIED when he did it.
In Rubin's blog today on the press conference
it’s interesting that there’s no mention at all of what Omar said. Did he write this before the conference was over?
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2009/07/27/2009-07-27_tony.html
Either that or he’s trying to take himself out of the story when he’s buried in it now.
They'll probably have someone else cover it
to keep it objective.
Sure
if we don’t have to give up Game 7

uhhhh no on Ronnie being the GM.
He does a good job in the booth. He should stay there.

They are just crystal clear on what's what, and very articulate.
A pleasure to listen to.
The anti-homers, indeed.
Rockies announcers
just talked about the Tony B and Omar situation for like 10 minutes.
ain't had enough...
Wayne Hagin on Ubaldo Jimenez:
Not only a great pitcher, but “he speaks fluent English.”
Maybe he can replace you in the broadcast booth, then?
Gary, Keith, Ron
Wow, once again, no matter how embarrassing and amateurish the Met organization has become, Gary, Keith, and Ron delivered a great analysis of the day’s events.
“bizarre” as Gary said. They pulled no punches.
Great job by those guys. One of the few reasons to watch these games.
I was actually surprised...
that they so strongly defended Rubin. They basically said it was no big deal to ask about jobs with the club, they said it happens all the time, and is not unethical in any way.
That was interesting.
I thought it sounded a little odd...
but the SNY booth said otherwise. I’ll take their word. They made it sounded like normal networking.
I may be dinosaur but it sounds like
these reporters can be bribed with jobs to shut their mouths. To me its very unethical and reporters should be fired for doing it. But I guess its the sign of the times that widespread corruption should just be ignored because everyone is doing it.
by aparkermarshall on Jul 27, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Well...
I don’t know if I’d call it “corruption”.
If Rubin wants to check out possibly working in baseball, and he covers baseball, doesn’t it make sense to inquire?
What’s he supposed to do, quit his job before asking any advice?
Yes
or recuse himself from covering the Mets. Would you want your lawyer to inquire about working for the prosecutors office while he is defending you?
by aparkermarshall on Jul 27, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah
If this is truly common in sports reporting — and it may be — it’s one more thing that would never fly in any other section of the newspaper, and one more sign that sports “journalism” is generally terrible. This, more than firing Joe Morgan, was the point of FJM — crappy journalistic practice is all too routine in the sports world.
I don't know
I’m no journalist, or lawyer, but it seems to me “unethical” would be something along the lines of conflict of interest, or “doing favors” in exchange for favorable treatment. At leasy, that is what my company’s code of conduct manual says.
Rubin consistently KILLS the Mets, so I don’t think he had anything to worry about. In fact, if the Mets were smart, they would hire him AWAY from the Daily News so he couldn’t kill them on the paper anymore.
he should have inquired with
another team if he was that interested, not with the Mets.
Was he killing them because he didnt get the job?
You see how easy it is to call his motives into question now that he was asking about a job.

No one needs Jeff Francoeur to fail to justify a love of OBP
the point of being a hitter is not making outs, OBP measures how often a player doesnt make outs.
who doesn't love OBP?
People who like their ballplayers to make outs?
I really want

He’d only struck out 3 times. Slight improvement. But good righties can still work him over.
What do you think they will do for next year?
Delgado gone. What do they do for 1B, LF, RF, 2B, C? Not to mention pitching. Holes all over the place.
Yeah, I know
But this team is what, dead last in the majors in HR? They have to someone on the team capable of hitting more than 10 HR.

8 pitches and 7 strikes for Ollie
Put last inning in a time capsule.
He's trying so hard to throw strikes
that he’s “wild in the strike zone” and basically grooves pitches. Could have had Randy Wolf less than half the price!
I agree
And there was really nothing in Ollie last year that gave you the impression that he was on the verge of a major breakthrough.

Post game with Jerry
" I thought Ollie pitched very well. His velocity was up. HIs accuracy was up. They just hit some good pitches".
Nice catch by...
ummm…whoever that guy is…in left field.
Press Conference
Tell me that wasn’t the most RETARDED press conference of all time. I swear the Mets are worse than the Knicks. There is no way the Wilpons can keep Omar after this year, they can’t be that stupid can they?
I hate Omar as much as anyone
But I don’t think he has approached “Knick level” yet.
Give him some time, and he’ll probably get there though.
agree
Isaiah took bad GM-ing where no bad GM has gone before. He turned the roster of one of the league’s flagship franchises into an utter toxic waste dump. To be the Knicks of Isaiah’s peak, we’d have to give away our core and sign Redding, Ramon Martinez, and Oil Spill Valdez to colossal extensions that cripple our ability to improve ourselves. We’d also need to commit PR disasters that go beyond simply embarrassing the franchise, that spark litigation and societal outrage, like the sexual harassment case and Starbury’s truck party. No GM has ever been permitted to stay on long enough to do that much damage. What we witnessed with the Knicks is a once in a generation accomplishment.

After this year?
How bout after this week?
Omar has to be praying the Mets win this one today to at least lessen the blow in tomorrows paper.
What he just pulled is going viral all over the web.
Haha...yeah...
I can’t wait for the back pages of the tabloids tomorrow. It’s going to be awesome.
It's already the top story on Yahoo's MLB news feed
This is gonna be all over the place.
Never looks good when a member of any sports team goes after a member of the press.
I haven't even gotten to ESPN yet
That’s gonne be nasty as it makes the rounds.
Omar
I’ve never seen a sports reporter called out in a press conference before.
Man
I’m out of the loop for two days and all hell breaks loose. ;-)
The bloids are going to be great for a week; I wish I got the Post.
Dumb
I think it’s obvious by now that Omar is just a profoundly dumb human being. Even if he was a genius at being a GM (yeah, right), he still is laughably stupid in dealing with the media, or even speaking in public.
Like it’s obvious he had an ax to grind with Rubin, but to think that this was the appropriate place to do it just proves how little brainpower this guy has.
This is the title of the AP article
as I said earlier it’s the top story in Yahoo’s MLB news feed;
Mets fire VP Bernazard in bizarre news conference
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;ylt=AlTCf1ssgc8R9sxL1qfC98RvLYF?slug=ap-mets-bernazardfired&prov=ap&type=lgns
You know...
When I read the transcript of the press conference on this site, and it kept saying that Omar said, “You lobby for job”…I thought that was kind of a cheap shot, like they were exaggerating, but then when I heard the audio, that’s exactly what he said.
Ralph Kiner is the man
and always makes me laugh
NY NY Sports Guys
I think those guys can do a better job than Omar.
Keith says Tulo has bad range
Tell that to UZR, which has him at 10.5 runs above average for his career
Funnier aspect about how Minaya framed what Rubin called about VS what Gary, Keith and Ron called it
Gary, Keith and Ron stated that Rubin called asking for career advice.
Omar claimed Rubin called trying to get a job in the organization.
This is where Omar is completely fucked. Those are two seperate things and if it was just career advice Omar comes off looking like one big phat liar.
We get enough of that when you do that on the Newsday boards
can we actually just have a discussion here instead of that?
I'm trying to keep things threaded above
but I basically just said the same thing upthread. Omar actually seems by most accounts to have been just lying, bald-faced, about Rubin’s behavior.
I didn't catch that upthread
Sorry bout that.
It dawned on me the moment KGR and mentioned it.
Didn’t think to post it until now.
He's screwed anyway

there is “trying to make something happen” and then there are poor gambles. Razor takes a lot of the latter. By contrast, last season I think we had the opposite problem of unpredictability from the 3rd base coach. Shines has been, if nothing else, consistent.

The funny part about the Mets front office is that no one we have could even get a job with any other team.

It’s July and the Mets are 5 games below .500. Oh, and there are 6 other teams ahead of them in the wild-card “race.” And they’re playing a field full of sub-replacement-level scrubs.

Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa
I don't know about the pointing in the sky part, the belly, yeah

METSMERIZED
I’m not saying that Jeff Francoeur should walk more, but I am saying that it’s indisputable that every time he’s walked as a Met he’s caused a home run to follow.
What is this reply button
and what have you done with his hat
oh, sorry, I get it now
Isn’t there a user here called Metsmerized, too? I figured you were replying to some comment from him/her.
that doesnt strike me
as being sustainable

We all hate Jerry
but you got to give him credit we all thought bunting with Murph was a bad idea and we all thought batting with Tatis was bad.Maybe Jerry knows what he is doing.Or maybe he’s a lucky son of a bitch.Who knows

We probably don’t have this inning w/o Castillo blowing off Shines.

He is a stupid, lucky son of a bitch
and these moves inevitably fail more often than not. One of the reasons why we don’t score much despite our still decent team OBP is that Jerry gives away outs at every opportunity

Baseball Tonight starting up
Can’t wait for the Omar recap…LOL…
Damn, I gotta now do 5 hours of CLE
and I’m tired.
late to the board
just wanted to say i got back from watching at my friends place (huge rockies fan) and it was the greatest moment ever to see tatis blast one with the bases loaded and for francoeur to WALK (even if they didnt give him a choice in the matter). Going to the game tomorrow, hope to see another game like this.

Fun thread to read
These threads now constitute my morning at work and it kills a solid half hour. Good to see how everyone was horrified by Tatis ph at first, and then elated, just like me. Keep up the good work, guys!
