Ike Davis/First Base Rankings

I had part of this in a thread over on Sickel's blog, but figured it may be of interest here.  I think Ike is moving well up the ranks, ahead of even Lars Anderson in my mind now.

This list does not count 1B DH types now catching such as Montero or Flowers, etc., or if Wallace moves to first

I may be missing some guys, but here is a possible top 10:

Rank name age level avg/oba/slug ABs BBs Ks Community Rank(minorleagueball preseason)1B and Overall

1. Freddie Freeman, 19, AA .306/.386/.457 324 30 46 (7-46)

2. Justin Smoak, 22, AAA, .288/.402/.443 271 50 57 (2-22)

3. Logan Morrison, 21, AA, .268/.419/.459 157 41 25 (5-38)

4. Yonder Alonso, 22, AA, .287/.360/.470 230 28 35 (6-44)

5. Chris Carter, 22, AA, .306/.408/.513 386 65 98 (8-51)

6. Ike Davis, 22, AA, .296/.384/.507 345 49 87 (N/A)

7. Lars Anderson, 21, AA, .260/.351/.389 339 47 90 (1-21)

8. Eric Hosmer, 19, A+, .255/.349/.376 306 46 74 (4-29)

9. Kyle Blanks, 22, majors, .283/.393/.485 233 39 63 (9-79)

10. Brandon Allen 23, AAA, .295/.368/.492 356 39 68 (N/A)

Ike's ISO is the highest of anyone on the list, and considering he was in FSL and EL, as opposed to say, Carter, in Texas League, that's really impressive.  Still discounted a notch due to strikeouts and last year, but last year now seems like the fluke.   I gave Freeman the nod over Smoak due to age and he is already doing well ina limited sample at 19 since his promotion to AA. I have carp as honorable mention.  But for Ike to be someone in the running for top 3 even (Alonso and Carter ahead by just a  hair) after last year is really an impressive comeback.

I like Ike.

And a nice ISO (especially after last year’s freaking-outing, and considering our other internal post-Delgado 1B options’ power tools).

I also enjoy Ike

but I’d probably put him closer to #8, with Alonso and Allen behind him.

I don’t see much justification past raw numbers that Davis can beat Hosmer OR Anderson

raw numbers

I guess I am overemphasizing this year’s results, and soft-pedaling last year.

I'd totally disregard last yaer

but yeah I think you’re putting a bit too much emphasis on this year. I mean don’t get me wrong all these guys are legit, and it’s all really close between the 10 of them, but I think Hosmer and Anderson have more to bring to the table for years to come.

And i can be totally wrong.

I may

also be overplaying the Freeman hand here, too. Just that he is 3 eyars younger and holding his own in AA now. He might put up moster numbers by the time he is Smoak’s age. Smoak does have a great eye and stroke, though.

Nice

He’s definitely moving up some lists. His platoon splits are awful, though we’re only talking about 35 at-bats against lefties.

vs LHP: .229/.325/.286
vs RHP: .346/.436/.642

Even though its SSS

you can say the walks are very, very encouraging, especially against lefties.

Platoon splits

I mentioned this in the sickels blog thread. The thing is, Alonso, for example, aslo has a rough platoon split. .209/.265/.279. Anderson not quite as bad, .247/.360/.329, but Andersdon is not mashing righties like Isaac. So while it is a concern, it afflicts the guys he is close to as well.

yup

I don’t think that’s a bad way to go. Be like teufel and backman at 2b for the ’86 team.

very interesting idea

but i’d like to think that one day ike will learn to hit lefties and thats a surefire way to make sure he doesn’t

by Rob Castellano on Jul 29, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I mean for the short term, at least.

Evans really kills lefties.

Just the fact that he is now in the discussion w/ these

guys is encouraging enough for me.

I guess, given his draft position this is the group he should kind of be with, but his 2008 short season was so bad. Great to see how he’s rebounded.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
