Lineup

There is only one part of the lineup I don’t like.
Fernando Tatis. Am I alone in this?

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

Something has to be wrong with Castillo...right?

He's been given an awful lot of days off lately

Tatis was the one that was reportedly banged up yesterday so ????

Tatis has been swinging much better of late

, so I really don’t have much of a problem with him being in there.

I doubt I’ll miss Castillo’s .322 wOBA and -3.1 UZR

If the lineup HAS to make any sense

You put the best available hitters there to take advantage of CBP, at the expense of defense.

by Michkin on Jul 3, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I like Castillo from the right side

And his black hole defense is superior to whatever Tatis is going to give you at the keystone.

F! should be playing imo.

but the 2009 David Wright is dogshit.
The .450 BABIP masked this for a while, but striking out against a 90 mph straightball over the middle of the plate navel high? Dog—shit.
The only question with me is whether or not this represents a permanent erosion of his skill set ala Tatis or whether he will recover his old self. The only thing I say of him is don’t sell low. I’m a loyal guy, so I’ll give him until the end of 2010 to prove this is a fluke.
Otherwise, this is no longer someone I treat as a franchise player.

You know what? Why not fire Hojo? Seriously? Why not? Do something. Fire Wright’s baseball father, because in 2009, he’s a bastard. Like Brad Holt.

Lots of interesting decisions to be made for 2010. Delgado will (should) be gone. What do we do with Castillo (2 more years)? Ollie (3 more years)? Sheffield (FA)?

Plus, it seems impossible to predict what we’ll get out of Reyes and Beltran, due to injuries. And do we get 30 HR Wright, or .340 Wright?

Uh huh.

Again. He is not a superstar this entire season, and he is an offensive liability at third base. He is well below average for the position. He borderline sucks.

You were making decent points eariler

but that’s ridiculous. Even if his average is a bit artificially high, I’d still expect him to be hitting over .310, and Citi has robbed 6 of his homers.

What does that make him? .310/.400/.550?

The OBP is inflated by the BABIP as much as his average.

.275/.355/.395 is his real production (his batter FIP or FIB if you will) this is below average and borderline suck for 3rd base. The only question is will he recover his superstar form by 2010.

You pulled .275 out of your ass

and yes, I know AVG is a component of OBP.

I know that you know

that AVG is a component of OBP. I know that I pulled .275 out of my ass. I could really look up his staff and crunch the numbers but I didn’t feel like it at this moment.

I’ll tell you…last freaking place.

to be fair

what games has he won games for us this year and we would be no worst than in 3rd place

by Jadden Hopkins on Jul 3, 2009 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um...

He leads the team in Avg, Runs, RBI, OBP and Stolen Bases. I think that’s enough of a contribution to helping us win games.

Your right, but we would certainly be in 4th place without him. Hell, we will be tied for 3rd by the end of the night.

I don't think it's possible to lead the league in hitting and "borderline suck" at the same time.

He’s having an odd season, but he is still an exceptional player

Dudes

For your info. I have supported Wright for the entire season, I think that berg’s piece that Stats require faith was one of the best sports articles ever written. Numbers require faith as well. You have to realize that eventually, players regress to their skill sets. I am WELL AWARE of this, just as you are well aware that AVG is part of OBP.

You must realize
A) I am venting and am allowed to vent after our “superstar” looks like shit against a pitcher who (by MLB standards) IS SHIT.
B) We would be in last place without our superstar’s BABIP, just as we would be in last place without our superstar
C) I FUCKING LOVE David Wright. I hate to see him suck like this after defending him against the idiot press for so long, and I hate him proving the idiot press (whom I despise) right. But that is what he is doing.

The time has come to ask some questions. This is a full half season of sub-standard performance from a player who is by all rights a franchise player. There is something wrong with him. We have to ask “what is it?” “What is the evidence that he can fix this?” “What if anything does this bode for the future?” This is probably a down year, or maybe even a down half. There is an excellent chance that Wright goes on a tear in the second half and makes these comments look as asinine as they are. But he is lousing it up now, and we should not sugarcoat it with his totally illusory counting stats.

How do you think the Philthies fans

feel about Jimmy Rollins?

I was just thinking of that

Rollins’ case is slightly different because he isn’t really a franchise player. Just a very good player who had some well-timed career years. He’s as good as you can be without being a franchise player but he’s a fringe star.

Wright is a legit perrenial MVP candidate. What the hell is wrong with him?

And there is absolutely no silver lining

or inflated BABIP that has made Rollins anything close to productive.

Your comments are asinine

D-Wright is a 26 year old superstar. Stop with the “it’s time to start asking some questions” bullshit, cause that’s what it is – bullshit.

by James Kannengieser on Jul 3, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you seriously denying that there is something wrong with Wright

Because that’s more asinine than anything I’ve said.
I would be much more confident if the situation were reversed—that is, if Dub’s BABIP were .230 and he were still showing the same peripherals (HR/FB, K rate K/BB) but it’s the opposite.

Wright is sucking at the indicators of real performance. He is doing well in mirage stats. There is a problem. The only question is how correctable it is and when it will be corrected.

Indicators of real performance?

You act as if he doesn’t always have a high BABPIP

by Syler on Jul 3, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, hitters do have control of BABIP

I could see .350, but .450 is beyond anything that anyone can sustain. babe Ruth cannot sustain it. (Of course, it has regressed a bit already and will regress a bit more.)
K/BB, HR/FB are in the sinkhole. Why is this the case, and how correctible is it?
