Lineup
There is only one part of the lineup I don’t like.
Fernando Tatis. Am I alone in this?
"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran
Something has to be wrong with Castillo...right?

He's been given an awful lot of days off lately
Tatis was the one that was reportedly banged up yesterday so ????
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
Tatis has been swinging much better of late
, so I really don’t have much of a problem with him being in there.
I doubt I’ll miss Castillo’s .322 wOBA and -3.1 UZR
But he has gold gloves!
And he can bunt!

If the lineup HAS to make any sense
You put the best available hitters there to take advantage of CBP, at the expense of defense.
I like Castillo from the right side
And his black hole defense is superior to whatever Tatis is going to give you at the keystone.
F! should be playing imo.
I'm ready for battle!
Happy Friday everyone, Happy 4th as well!

yeah, you're probably right
it’s like seven mediocre innings become good by virtue of there being seven of them
but vs a yankee team
that owns him he only gave up 3 runs and like 3 hits after that 1st inning

I’m mildly interested in the Marlins new park.
I can't believe I'm saying this
but the 2009 David Wright is dogshit.
The .450 BABIP masked this for a while, but striking out against a 90 mph straightball over the middle of the plate navel high? Dog—shit.
The only question with me is whether or not this represents a permanent erosion of his skill set ala Tatis or whether he will recover his old self. The only thing I say of him is don’t sell low. I’m a loyal guy, so I’ll give him until the end of 2010 to prove this is a fluke.
Otherwise, this is no longer someone I treat as a franchise player.

I turned the TV off as soon as I saw that K. The truth however, is that Wright’s .450 BABIP masked that he really has been out and out shit this entire season. Hot streak or cold streak, regardless of there the BABIP bounces, throughout, he’s been godawful.
You know what? Why not fire Hojo? Seriously? Why not? Do something. Fire Wright’s baseball father, because in 2009, he’s a bastard. Like Brad Holt.

Lots of interesting decisions to be made for 2010. Delgado will (should) be gone. What do we do with Castillo (2 more years)? Ollie (3 more years)? Sheffield (FA)?
Plus, it seems impossible to predict what we’ll get out of Reyes and Beltran, due to injuries. And do we get 30 HR Wright, or .340 Wright?

For your info. I have supported Wright for the entire season, I think that berg’s piece that Stats require faith was one of the best sports articles ever written. Numbers require faith as well. You have to realize that eventually, players regress to their skill sets. I am WELL AWARE of this, just as you are well aware that AVG is part of OBP.
You must realize
A) I am venting and am allowed to vent after our “superstar” looks like shit against a pitcher who (by MLB standards) IS SHIT.
B) We would be in last place without our superstar’s BABIP, just as we would be in last place without our superstar
C) I FUCKING LOVE David Wright. I hate to see him suck like this after defending him against the idiot press for so long, and I hate him proving the idiot press (whom I despise) right. But that is what he is doing.
The time has come to ask some questions. This is a full half season of sub-standard performance from a player who is by all rights a franchise player. There is something wrong with him. We have to ask “what is it?” “What is the evidence that he can fix this?” “What if anything does this bode for the future?” This is probably a down year, or maybe even a down half. There is an excellent chance that Wright goes on a tear in the second half and makes these comments look as asinine as they are. But he is lousing it up now, and we should not sugarcoat it with his totally illusory counting stats.

Are you seriously denying that there is something wrong with Wright
Because that’s more asinine than anything I’ve said.
I would be much more confident if the situation were reversed—that is, if Dub’s BABIP were .230 and he were still showing the same peripherals (HR/FB, K rate K/BB) but it’s the opposite.
Wright is sucking at the indicators of real performance. He is doing well in mirage stats. There is a problem. The only question is how correctable it is and when it will be corrected.

is that he was OVERMATCHED COMPLETELY by the Brewer’s ace, and was overmatched by Lopez, who is a fringe AAA pitcher, and that he looks like crap at the plate. He is most assuredly NOT playing awesome. That is a mirage.

Well, not exactly.
I didn’t say to get rid of them and replace them with nothing, or replace them with AAA players. You are allowed to trade players for other players of equal perceived value.
And if you don’t resign Delgado, you’re allowed to sign another FA instead at equal salary.
I mean, the Red Sox traded Hanley Ramirez for Beckett. Was that smart? Dumb? I don’t know, depends how you look at it. Point being, it was a swap of like talent that seemed to work out for both teams.
The point is
It’s moronic to get rid of them just because they were part of the collapse
Aside from Delgado, they’re all still relatively young and in their prime
Yet, you want them gone because we had the worst bullpen in baseball in 2008
You build the team around your best players, not get rid of them like some fat Diet-Coke drinking p.o.s suggests
Ok
Right…I didn’t say “get rid of all of them”. I said I personally wouldn’t have brought all 4 back. So Delgado being the oldest, would be a logical choice to not re-sign.
Problem is
Who was going to replace him?
We were never going to get Tex, and well, we had no internal replacements…
Mike Carp!
Delgado was the ultimate sell-high candidate, seriously. Iwould have really seen if either Murphy, Carp, or Evans or some combo could have held the fort.

Your comments above seem very ultimatum-ish, very “shape up or ship out.” I think the guy has bought himself some goodwill with (prior to this half season, where his wOBA is ~.400) with 4 and a half stellar seasons. I think everyone has discussed the BABIP and HR/FB ad nauseum, so all we can do is sit back and see what happens, then evaluate at a later date.

I don't want David Wright to be traded at all
I’m just saying that it’s time to realize that his performance is purely a mirage and that one has to start getting worried. He has bought all the goodwill in the world.
But there are two sides to the coin. Fans have to support a superstar through the good times and bad, but the superstar has to perform like a superstar. Otherwise, the relationship changes. If this continues for another full season and a half or so, the relationship between Wright, the Mets and NY is changed.
Here’s hoping that Wright puts it together in the second half.

But you're expanding a set by a magnitude of four
That’d be like taking a quarter season for a player and assuming that’s how they’re going to finish. Granted a half season of data is a bit more sustainable than a quarter season, its still only semi-reliable as a barometer, and it doesn’t trump the previous five seasons of data. .351 * 210 = 73.71 HIP (Hits In Play)
73.5 HIP + 5 HR = 78.71 H
78.5 H/293 AB = .269. Weird, I almost wrote it out the first time I did it, guess I should. Then I get .364 for OBP. Didn’t regress SLG.

We haven't won a series all year after losing the 1st game
This series would be a great a time to do so
At least if we win 1....
we’ll only be 2 back.
Omar and Jerry, dumbest tandem in baseball and winning in spite of them.
Nieve needs to be an ace tomorrow.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
anyone else
impressed with misch tonight.if redding does not pitch vs L.A and it’s not Niese i would like to see misch get the start just to see if he has anything good
So far
so good with Misch. Don’t know if he has the rrepertoire to be an effective starter at the ML level.

Ideally
The Mets can look at these last 2 starts and wake up to the fact that both these guys are trash. If Maine comes back, Livan should be out of the rotation. Livan will probably stick around, and maybe Nieve to the pen, but Livan is garbage. Not just going by this start either.
Look how he faded on Minny last year. He is a truly terrible starter. If you give as many hits as he does this will happen often in the second half.
