Alright Mets

lets go for a six-pack of wins!

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

THis is gonna be a really tough one to pull off

This team pull off a four game sweep?

Not so sure about that.

Then again, we did eat up Colorado’s pen.

by Chickendirt on Jul 30, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

A 4 game sweep?

Can’t remember the last one. Last year vs. San Fran maybe?

by David G on Jul 30, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

How about a 4 game sweep punctuated by a day-night doubleheader sweep? Anyone remember the last time it happened in baseball, let alone for the Mets?

AND THEN LETS SWEEP THE DIAMONDBACKS

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Who did he have to work with? Jason Phillips?

Nope

Instead he had Eric Valent. That equals championship……not! Obviously, you have no stance to your argument. I never said Jermaine Dye was a legend, etc. So get that through your narrow mind. I said he would help.

Memo to SNY studio camera people.....

DO NOT do closeups on Bobby Ojeda.

I love the guy, but he has a huge scar on his forehead along with what is clearly a skin graft. Probably the aftermath of that boating accident years ago.

Not grossed out by it, or anything like that, but HE may not want to be shown like that.

by fxcarden on Jul 30, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions

One of the weird little aspects of Hi-Def TV...

You see all the players fucked up mugs. I watched about 3 innings of the 2006 NLCS a few months back on MLBTV and you can see that Pujols has a cold sore the size of Ecuador. Kinda weird. Pretty glad I’m not on TV.

by DonGately on Jul 30, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it was weird.

I couldn’t tell whether to be grossed out by the fact that he’s a dog, or to admire that he was stressing so badly because of the pressure, etc. that he broke out.

The Giants improved their team.

The Cubs just improved their bullpen by getting Grabow from the Bucs.

The Marlins may get a really good closer with Heath Bell.

Minaya is giving apologies and rejecting trades.

Just wanted to point that out.

by fxcarden on Jul 30, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

Probably.

He probably wants to stuff it down the Mets’ throats, which is why the Marlins want him. Plus I think he lives in Florida.

by Jadden Hopkins on Jul 30, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

The Giants need a lot more than Sanchez to improve that team

They have not one 100 RBI guy in that lineup.

They play in the NL West and the only reason they are in it right now is because the NL East and NL Central got stuck playing the AL East and the AL Central.

The NL West is terrible and the only real team in that division is LA.

San Fransisco is ten games under .500 on the road.

Why does Jon Heyman hate Omar?

Is he just going to keep floating rumors that Omar was turning down trades?

First – the Halladay rumor that turned out to be false. Now – that Omar turned down Martinez from the Indians, without even saying what the Indains asked for.

He’s starting to get a little ridiculous.

Maybe one of them and a positional prospect, but I can’t see giving up the only two pitchers who are even close to the majors for a 30 yr old 1st baseman that trys to catch.

why don't we argue about it all day

fact is, on a 3-2 pitch with castillo on second, frenchie batting, murphy on deck vs a tough lefty, if you give me a choice between ball 4 and a random hart hit linedrive that we don’t know the outcome of, I will take the linedrive. Nobody is saying Frenchie is Barry Bonds over here, just that it sounds silly to complain when a guy comes up in an RBI spot and lines out right at somebody.

the outcome was okay that one time

But the at-bat was symptomatic of everything wrong with his approach. Expanding your strike zone that much is a surefire recipe for never seeing a good pitch to hit.

by anonymous on Jul 30, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

well sure, but that's a false dichotomy

there’s no guarantee, when he swings at ball 4, that he’s going to hit a line drive. sure, if you can guarantee a line drive, you take it just about every time, but you’re neglecting the possibility that he strikes out or hits a grounder or pops up or etc. etc.

to the end that the guys they traded away weren't all that good anyway

with the possible exception of Morgan, what have they really given up?

Adam LaRoche, Freddy Sanchez, John Grabow, Jack Wilson and Nate McClouth are useful parts to a contending team, but fairly useless (and expensive to a team like the Pirates)

And Ian Snell and Tom Gorz were treading water

Yeah, they got cheaper (in terms of the players on their roster), but those players are no more age-similar so when they grow up a little, they should be pretty good.

Think Tampa – except that the Pirates didnt have the smarts to draft these guys 3 years ago.

If Laroche, Sanchez, Wilson, Gorz, Grabow, McClouth etc are all so great why didn’t they win anything? They are finally building a respectable farm system.

I don't know if that was sarcasm

But he kinda got a raw deal with the way Jerry yanked him around the first few months (in part his own fault for def problems). But I think its becoming evident that Murph needs fairly regular ABs and he just didnt get anything of that nature for the first 2 mos of this year.

by mets81 on Jul 30, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He also just flat hasn't played well

nor does he appear to have the kind of ceiling we were lead to believe he had initially. It was part sarcasm. Murphy was oversold to the fanbase, which isn’t his fault. At the same time, the guy was named the starter in the off-season based on a small handful of ABs.

I’ve seen a lot of really bad ABs from him this year. He’s looked a bit better recently.

I don't think anybody really thought Murphy was some huge ceiling guy

maybe having a ceiling like Nick Johnson. Put together vary patient at bats, hit line drives, draw walks. He hasn’t played well, but I havent seen anything to change his ceiling in my eyes. I think Murph can hit, and I think he eventually will if he gets ab’s everyday.

Stuck in the perpetual motion
Dying against the machine
The whole thing leaves
You a nothing instead of a these
The sun is black and the black halos fly
And your number is backwards again when you try
The sound is so cute when you’re 22
When you’re 22

Eggs break when you walk on the scramble
You’re living against the machine
The whole thing leaves
You a nothing instead of a these
The bone is cracked and the cracked eggshells fly
And your number is backwards again when you drive
The whole thing’s removed when you’re 22
When you’re 22

At 5:30 PM EDT today Starting today at 5:00 PM EDT, witness one of the greatest renderings of visual sound effects ever!

UPDATE 1: My browser has crashed several times in the process from all the rants (FUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!) - as a result, there will instead be 4 or 5 separate installments of fxcarden's Nightly Rants! from 2011, with a similar pattern for the 2012 rants. Take my word for it, when I say that it's for the best. Here's the revised schedule:

Volume 1: 2011
No. 1: Today at 5:00 PM EDT
No. 2: Tomorrow
No. 3: Thursday
No. 4 and No. 5 (?) TBD

UPDATE 2: Vol. I, No. 1 (July, 2011) is now up!

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
Jon Rauch is awesome. Dan Tanna is, obviously, a fan of Greg Pomes.
