Game 1 of the second half

lets hope the Mets can remain close to contention until August, when it is more likely we will get everyone back.

"We have to find a way to play better, there's no doubt. Overall. I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Offense, defense, pitching -- we have to find a way to play better. The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept -- personally, I feel embarrassed." -- Carlos Beltran

Hope so. But I have a gut feeling that tells me that there is also a problem in the clubhouse.

I think that the team right now is completely rudderless and consumed by finger-pointing. Maybe Delgado, Beltran and some of the other vets can help fix that, but I just have the feeling that this second half is the last run this group will make together.

I first became a Mets fan because of Jose Reyes

the thought of losing him, or any of the core players, just doesn’t feel right.

Well...in that case it still Sums up the mets season thus far

Just not quite coming on. Not hitting the way they should, not pitching, not catching pop ups.

To watch or not to watch this one

That is the question.

Can I bare another game hoping that the next day Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya are both fire?

And the dissapointment when I wake up the next day to read that both are still here.

I had a dream

That we actually got to the World Series. Against the Red Sox in game 7 with no pitchrs left Jerry turned to Omir Santos who pitched the first Mets no hitter. And hit a walkoff homer. And next year he pitched and caught and hit .400 with no walks and a .600 BABIp. THen I woke up and saw him swing at a slider at his foot.

On the Mets Noy Top Plays

Damn you ESPN. If you’re going to show that, at least play some circus music or Benny Hill music, and speed up the film to go with it. Be a little creative and do it justice!

I attended the infamous Dodger game and just now realized how fast Manuel hit the locker room after Reed’s throw. That was fast!

Lots of Mets fans left right after Church missed third, and that was the right move.

How much longer does it take for Wilpon to get it

that there are more problems with this team besides the banged up line up?

Maybe start with the fact that Pelfrey and the rest of the starting rotations has looked lost lately?

FIRE MANUEL AND OMAR!!!!!

This is lookin like the locker room rot that infected the 93 Mets. It starts with the GM.

Pelfrey has looked lost all season. The starting rotation has been a mess.

I don’t want to hear about the injuries to the lineup.

by Chickendirt on Jul 7, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

FIRE BOTH OF EM NOW

Our farm is depleted.

Why?

Minaya traded the farm. We used to have Bay and Kazmir. He traded Xavier Nady for Ollie Perez who’s never met expectations. He resigned the guy to an absurd contract.

He could have signed Hudson this off season and opted not to. Probably because we are saddled with Liuis Double PLay Castillo’s terrible contract.

He traded Castro when there was not need to. He was our best hitting catcher.

OMAR is the reason this team is a mess right now. It has no depth.

by Chickendirt on Jul 7, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

well

Minaya didn’t trade Bay away from the Mets, he did trade Bay away from the Expos but that was an atypical situation

by JoshNY on Jul 7, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hudson isn't that good. Why have two over-priced aging second baseman in long-term deals?

And Omar didn’t trade away Bay or Kazmir while Mets GM. Kazmir was Duquette.

He did trade for Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado, Oliver Perez, and John Maine.

by Pat Andriola on Jul 7, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Hudson

defense is declining, bat has cooled off a ton after a hot April and his OBP and SLG are both now below what they were last year.

by David G on Jul 7, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

on the one hand, Castro has been crappy since he was traded to Chicago – OPS .651 for the WSox.
on the other hand, Omir OPSed .592 in June.

Fun Fact

Did you know that since Citizen’s Bank opened in 2004 no team had ever failed to get an extra base hit in 2 straight games. EVER. Until last weekend. Your 2009 Metsies!

by David G on Jul 7, 2009 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

Speaking of reason why the Metsies are losers this year ...

… I’m blaming it on Chris Carlin. Why have the poster child for SNY and the hardest working man on your network be an announcer with a speech impediment? What was wrong with Matt Yaloff and Maz? Bad karma…

Given their huge payroll (what is it, 3rd highest in MLB?), they can never admit to rebuilding.

Again with zone rating

Seriously give that a rest. Nelson Cruz is the best outfielder in baseball according to zone rating. What’s Castillo’s zone rating? I can see with my eyes it’s not great. Hudson’s a much better player than Castillo, and he’s the bargain free agent of the season for what he’s giving the Dodgers. That’s why you hear people bring him up. We didn’t get O-Dog because the Mets have no understanding of SUNK COST.

It’s really like watching an old friend struggle while the people who are supposed to be helping him just stand and watch him drown. This season so far has been one of the most painfull I’ve had to endure of any team as a sports fan.

I just don’t think I can do this anymore. It doesn’t feel good at all.

It is what it is, but it could be worse.

We have one of the best starting pitchers in baseball.
We have one of the best closers in baseball.
We have a great 3B that could be the star of the future.
We have a solid SS with a ton of speed that could be on of the top 5 SS in the game.
We have the BEST center fielder in baseball.
We just lack depth, but depth is coming if our farm system stays intact.
Injuries fucked us but it could be worse. The Pirates are going for the most consecutive seasons with a losing record.

Now, pep up and enjoy the show for what it is. Minor League baseball.

Farm system

Does anyone know what Baseball America ranked our farm system? I read Sickels’ chat today, and off the top of his head, he said it was “average”.

I read some other article today, I forget where, that had other scouts saying it was pretty bleak, but they could just have an axe to grind.

My question being, does anyone have any more objective published rankings of the Mets’ system?

A Lost Season

The worst thing about this season is that there is really nothing to look forward to. The sell-able pieces we have are injured — Delgado, Wagner, Putz and perhaps Maine — and will be back too late to deal . “Playing the kids” consists of calling up Jon Niese and maybe Josh Thole, but the latter is doubtful.

Well if he wasn't out shining shoes all day, he'd be better

At this point, I really could care less. I’m defeated.

I thought he spent the weekend taking Jerry's nieces around town?

After he got out of the fiasco in LA (but didn’t) he has earned an exemption from me.

That all I can stands, 'cause I can't stands no more

Ugh. I’ve been a Metropolitans fan since 1967 (the days of Jack Fisher, Bob Shaw, Jim McMillan, Jerry Buchek (‘68?), et al. But after the last two seasons, THIS is particularly gruesome to watch. And there’s no end in sight. Do any of you honestly think that “pitching, defense, timely hitting and heads-up play” will keep us in this thing? If you do, then I got some ocean front property in Oklahoma I’d like to sell you.

I have no faith that Ollie is straightened out; that Johnny Maine, Jose Reyes, and Mrs. Beltran will be coming back any time soon. Delgado, at his age with this injury, is done for all intents and purposes. There are no deals out there to make. So … I think we’re done. We could be 8 games out of first by the All Star break.

I meant to say ...

Of course if we got "pitching, defense, timely hitting and heads-up play" we could stay in this thing. We just won’t get all that … at least at the same time.

What about 2004? What about how he will never, ever, EVER barrel into a catcher on a play at the plate. Instead, he will try and do a meringue dance in a futile attempt to avoid a tag. He won’t even slide!

Beltran is a very talented CF

… no doubt. But I’d rather have Shane Victorino playing center. We just don’t have those hard nosed gamer type of players that the Phillies have or that we had back in ’86. ’73, or ’69 (or 2000 for that matter).

Two questions

1. How do I make grids/spread sheets go go on a post. I have been inspired to compare Beltran and Victorino and would need those skills.
2. Any way to pm somebody?

blah

The common sentiment among true mets fans these days is that we are confronted with two equally dismal options: to watch and “suffer” or turn our back to the team altogether. Some of my friends, the most ardent of mets fans, have admitted they just stopped watching. This seems to be the saner alternative to watching a team we care about so deeply completely crumble. However, this dualistic way of thinking is indicative of a mentality that lies at the root of the problem itself. We have been trained as fans to worship the end result, the box score, the standings, what our team lacks, and so forth. What we have lost in all this is the game of baseball itself. Its still possible to enjoy a beautiful play even if your team is down by ten runs and is 30 games out of first place. Im not trying to diminish the value of winning and losing, I just think we get carried away with it a little in new york. Lets all chill out, watch our metropolitans play the game of baseball and stop feeling sorry for ourselves

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
In order to raise extra capital, the Mets have explored signing Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training (replete with curiously high uniform number).
