this is just great
According to the Times, Minaya could trade some of the team’s few prospects for a midlevel player like Aubrey Huff, the Baltimore Orioles’ first baseman. But that may not be enough to keep the Mets in contention, and it could hobble them in years to come when they try to replace their aging players.
I just don’t have the words anymore.

Some of our "few" prospects?
That’s the part that gets me. Would it kill journalists to do a LITTLE research?

Doesn't it seem kind of obvious
that the Mets have to get whatever they can get for Gary Sheffield? Like…now? See if you can sucker Ed Wade into giving you something useful.
Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa
Of course, for Ed Wade to be interested
you might have to throw in Elmer Dessens.

Omar should try to find the brilliant GM that traded
Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips for 3 months of Bartolo Colon.
Oh, wait.
My problem with the NYT article:
If Minaya and the Mets organization signal to fans that 2009 is a lost cause and that 2010 may be, too, ticket sales for the remaining home games will suffer.
Unless we’re talking about the idiotic proposals to trade Wright and Reyes and Beltran, why would giving up on 2009 equal giving up on 2010? If the Mets could go into 2010 with a healthy core bolstered by some trade and FA acquisitions, they’d be contenders.
The real issue with this approach is, with Omar’s predilection to identify The Problem over an offseason and fix The Problem and only The Problem, I’m not sure he has the attention span to handle a task like “replace everyone except Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Pelfrey and Frankie.”

Seriously though, agree completely. Next year we’ll have the same team with a power bat and no depth.

Next year's depth from the farm
Shoud be fine if the core is healthy. Mejia and Holt will likely be AAA. Thole and Ike Davis will be knocking on the door. Havens may be in AA and if he plays well he’d be available in a pinch. Tejada should be in AAA and will be a better glove substitute than Cora, valdez. Fernando martinez should be ready to play, they will likely add an outfield bat and yes, again, Murph and evans will be depth in case of an Fernando fail, but I don’t think they are awful as depth goes.
Sherman today referred to Evans as mediocre. I suppose he isn’t great as a fielder and hurt them yesterday, but his limited sample wOBA is .347. he went on to laud Dodgers 20 something core and lumped Loney and marin in there, completely ignoring that Loney’s numbers and Martin’s numbers both suck compared to Evans this year.
This was an awful year for the core to breakdown because the farm wasn’t quite ready. Murph busted, martinez was maybe a year too young and the rest were just too far off. next year it could be counted on more in a pinch.
And next year hopefully the Mets can be like the Blue jays. marcum, Litsch, McGowan injured, fuck it, they bring in Romero, Richmond, Cecil, Rzcewyzinski whatever his name is…they keep pulling guys out their ass. Niese, Mejia Holt…maybe they could answer the call next year IF given the shot.
I agree
Except I wouldn’t count on a .347 wOBA from Evans. 5 of his 11 hits have come in his 9 PAs against LHP out of his 40 total PAs. He’s hitting .625 / .667 / .625 in this 9 PAs vs. LHP, but just .200 / .226 / .433 in with 10 Ks in 31 PAs vs RHP. Both sides of the platoon will regress towards the mean, but this just seems to be Evans’ profile as a hitter. A guy who can crush lefties, but just can’t handle tough right handed pitchers. Sherman is right, Evans isn’t anything special, but he’s a useful platoon bat who can be used against lefties and in a pinch.

He's perfect for a bench player.
Like, a good version of what Tatis was supposed to be.

Small sample size mania
I was impressed that Evans managed to rip doubles against right-handers Yovani Gallardo and Chris Carpenter.
But in the grand view, yes, what you said. Evans is a useful player to have and despite some of the misplays we’ve seen this month, he’s a good glove and pretty quick.

this year
“the problem” is injuries. So I fully expect Omar to hire a new training staff and not make a single impact acquisition all offseason. Yay for mediocrity.
Minaya is a GM from a previous era.
He does not know how to assemble a team. He will never, ever win at the major league level. His baseball knowledge is firmly rooted in the 80’s.
They knew how to assemble baseball depth in the 80s.

we are stuck with him
remember: 4-year extension.
and i highly, highly doubt they’ll dump him and eat his money.
