A bright spot: the Francoeur for Church swap has been an early steal for the Mets. He has been terrific

If we put aside our general contention that Church is overall a better player than Francoeur (the statistical numbers bear this out), here are the two players' slash lines with their new teams:

Francoeur: .298/.327/.442
Church: .278/.400/.444

If we blatantly disregard everything else, Francoeur does lead in homeruns 5-2, which I guess = early steal.

Yeah!

We win!

PS – Eric could you please stop mentioning Jeff Francoeur on your website? I tire of this subject matter.

Church is also very streaky and needed to hit .389 .450 .722 1.172 for a week to bring his numbers to that. Before the last 10 games he was platooned. Wouldn’t a platooned guy artificially have higher numbers?

I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problem as me.

When fans of other teams ask me why I hate Frenchy so much, I actually become incoherent because I can’t adequately express how much I hated the trade.

Oh good. Another day, another Francouer post.

Wait a minute, he has a low OBP? I haven’t heard that here before.

I look forward to reading the same thing again tomorrow, and every day thereafter.

Who is this Francoeur that you're talking about?

Has anyone here heard anything about him?

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

A chef of some sort?

Or a chemist? That would explain all this base business.

Chef Francouer

That’s a great nickname. Chef “Frenchy” Francouer, well versed in baguettes, French pastries, and espionage. Patience is his fatal flaw.

Perhaps this "Francouer" chap

is related to that Socks! character that folks keep talking about. I know very little of either man.

I sometimes wonder if this Socks! guy is related to the Yeti or the Loch Ness monster.

I’ve heard of all of them, but have never actually seen them to know they exist. Unfortunetely we get to see Francoeur every night, but hopefully next year he gets the Yeti treatment.

I'll be honest

I did not think Kevin was smarter than that.

I concur

His interviews questions are obvious and his talking points are cliche. He seems like a nice guy but I never have seen anything to tell me that he has a firm grasp on baseball analysis.

yeah kevin has never been what i'd call insightful

he’s a good TV personality, and usually fairly entertaining to watch, but not someone i’d go to as my first line of credible information

Well he did say

“if we blatantly disregard everything…” deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, he knows it’s a bad trade.

A steal for the Mets.....

….keep telling yourselves that.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
