How do the Mets become competitive again?

OK, first post and all that. You can check my profile for my background, but I'm an enthusiastic overseas Met fan. I visited Citi for a 3 day series with the Reds in July, sadly missing the Schneider and Tatis Home Runs as I had to get back to JFK for my flight home to London. I follow a lot of games live on mlb.com (can be tiring given the time difference).

I've been reading the site for a while and see a lot of well informed posters, and having read the guidleines I am going to start with a question.

What exactly do the Mets need to do to be competitive again in the NL East, and over and above that what would it take to actually win a Championship? Rather than say the Wilpons open up their wallets, fire Omar, fire Jerry, sign stars, what realistically can be done based on where the Mets are now so we can compete again in the next couple of seasons?

Apologies if this should have been a Fan Shot instead of a Fan Post.
