Jerry want Sheffield for Next Year

I'd take him on the cheap as a bench player
5th outfielder/pinch hitter and nothing more. I don’t want him starting or as anyone’s primary back-up.

I don't even want him as a 5th outfielder.
Injury prone, unathletic, bad defense…idk.

I think he's better than most of the other options we explore
Unless you guys are pumped for another year of Tatis/Sullivan and the like

i'm pretty sure
he’ll get Omar’s Old-Timers Special 2 Year Contract as a reward for this season, a la Valentin/Anderson/Tatis/El Duque. I equally expect him to be totally not worth signing for either of those two years, a la Valentin/Anderson/Tatis/El Duque.
Fingers crossed Omar is fired first.

I think Jerry means as a bench player
in that case I’ll tale him.He can’t play the field but he does have some pop

Sheffield
doesn’t even approach the top of the list of Mets problems. I have few qualms with him coming back as a part-time outfielder next year.

second
and the article states he is fine with whatever role he would be given. He has been one of the few bright spots this year.

I agree with Eric
Sheffield has been a perfectly cromulent part-timer.

The Risk
Is in overpaying him to be a bench player and also not cutting him if he doesn’t perform.
by DannyMetsGeek on Aug 12, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But knowing the mets
they’re going to overpay someone and not cut them when they don’t perform regardless of who they are. Sheffield will probably be the most productive of the likely candidates.

Totally
give him the Marlon Anderson treatment, not the Fernando Tatis treatment.

on a one year incentive laden contract, i wouldn't be enraged if they brought him back
but only under the stipulation that he doesnt start too many games. He really fits better as a DH somewhere, but I dont think he wants to go looking for another team.

At this point of his career, I don't think money is his priority
PH/DH (interleague) /LF (when a groundball pitcher is playing for us) would be fine

I'd be happy
If we can have Murphy, Evans, Martinez, Francoeur and Sheffield but not guarantee any of them jobs, I’d be happy. Plus, sign Endy again, seriously. Reed and Sullivan are flat out worse.

I'd keep Sully on the bench
Or bring him in to the late innings

The first thing I thought
was, Of course he only means as a bench player and fourth or fifth outfielder. He wouldn’t actually bring him back as a starter/cleanup hitter. Then I saw Jerry’s quote:
“I’d like to see Sheff here, Sheff is a good player,” Manuel said. “I think he could still be very, very productive at the age of 40. It all hinges on health. There’s no doubt in my mind that this guy’s going to hit until he’s 50 years old. He’s just that gifted and blessed.”And was kinda worried.

At least Jerry didn't say Sheff would "field" until he's 50.
Look, I’m grasping but I want to have some hope.

Meh.
On one hand, I don’t want him back, because it’s ridiculous.
On the other hand, if he’d be on the bench for a cheap contract, why not. We’re basically watching all of the Met bench players in the lineup every night, and Sheff is clearly the best of the sad bunch.
I’m fine with it if they cut him loose. Or, a 1 year cheapo contract, and he pinch hits in 2010.

I saw Bill Hall was released just now
Even though he kind of sucks, I would rather see him in the outfield then sully/and reed. Even with his dreadful season he is still .6 WAR, mainly because of defense at third, but he rated pretty good in center when he played there.
I think that I’m only suggesting this is because this is one of the only times I am so bored watching mets games at least change it up a bit

Bill Hall reeks of PEDs
How else do you explain that Brady Anderson year he had in 06? His offensive numbers have plummeted across the board since then, and he was pretty bad before that.
by Steeeve on Aug 12, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah he had rediculi
numbers that year, get him back on PEDs. Shit I would take some PED talk about the mets over watching this team play. Also, I say sign Smoltz just so he can make one start versus the braves and then release him. That would piss of all the braves fans and thoroughly amuse me.
by Delgado on Aug 12, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why stop at Smoltz
Why don’t we bring back Glavine and have him pitch at turner field
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 12, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I will officially stop rooting for the Mets
if Tom Glavine ever puts on their uniform again

not really
the league figured out he can’t hit curveballs is what happened to Hall

The Mets simply can't afford to carry a 41-year old, injury prone DH
He’s still a potent bat, but he literally can’t move anymore. The way the Mets build rosters at the ML and AAA level, they simply can’t afford to assign roster spots to extremely limited players. Carrying Sheffield means carrying a contingency plan. Do you trust the Mets front office to do that?

Kevin H beat me to punch
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

two words:
Matt Stairs.. Stairs is a horrific defensive player, can’t move anymore and is older than Sheff, but he’s a “professional hitter”. I wouldn’t mind at all for Sheff to be a pinch hitter used mostly against lefty pitching (which we all know he still crushes.)

Sheffield put a ring on Jerry’s finger.

Also, Adam Rubin lobby for 5th starter spot.
