It's amazing, isn't it

how we will settle for “6 innings” these days.

what ever happened to starters going deep into a game.

It's more amazing

That we’ll settle for 6 innings from a pitcher making $12 million.

7 strong

Maybe the closer Ollie is to home (Mexico) the better he pitches?

Check that USA/Mexico World Cup qualifier

Ollie will be done 4 2/3 while checking scores b/w innings…

ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting

Sheffield and Feliciano were both claimed of waivers, but both pulled back.

Now, neither can be traded.

I can understand Feliciano, but why the fuck wouldn’t you dump Sheffield for any kind of prospect you can get?

Idiocy at it’s finest

by Syler on Aug 12, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

If they plan on competing next year,

it would be foolish to rid themselves of one of their best relievers

by Syler on Aug 12, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

We aren't competing for anything

as long as Omar and Jerry are at the helm

by bishmets on Aug 12, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

No it wouldn't

Trading a reliever for a prospect is almost always a good move when you are not competing that year. For example, Feliciano was pretty bad last year, he has been great this year and was in 2006, was mediocre in 2007. Relievers, for the most part, are a crapshoot.

by mets81 on Aug 12, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

They probably were claimed by teams that didn't even really want them

Just didn’t want other teams to have them. So the Mets can either give them away, which makes no sense since Feliciano could be useful next year and Sheff costs nothing to hold onto, or give them away for no return aside from salary relief.

yeah,

I meant, pulling him back instead of trading him just because he’s useful this (or even next year). the other things are obviously true, and I would not give Feliciano away.

by mets81 on Aug 12, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Being claimed doesn't mean the other team was willing to trade prospects for them

Toronto got nothing for Rios. Claimed players can be: traded, pulled back or just given away for nothing.

by Michkin on Aug 12, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok

I understand the rules, and I understand not giving Feliciano away for nothing. But if they can get anything of value for him they should.

by mets81 on Aug 12, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

it also depends on who did the claiming.

I am sure the Mets dont’ want to trade Pedro or Sheff to a team that can come back and haunt them next year.

by fxcarden on Aug 12, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Not even

They could have been claimed by teams that have no interest. Neither has a cumbersome salary, so there’s no significant risk in any team claiming them. Its possible the teams that put in the claims were simply willing to “take them off our hands” and offer nothing in return, and were really just doing so to block another team from getting them.

Seriously what are we playing for at this point. Can’t we just throw and people and start a couple fights down the stretch? It will give the media that “edge” that we lack according to them. Lets throw at Rollins, Howard, Utley, H. Ramirez, Chipper, hell throw at Church. Can someone charge Pedro next week? At least give us some entertainment. At 5:30 PM EDT today Starting today at 5:00 PM EDT, witness one of the greatest renderings of visual sound effects ever!

UPDATE 1: My browser has crashed several times in the process from all the rants (FUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!) - as a result, there will instead be 4 or 5 separate installments of fxcarden's Nightly Rants! from 2011, with a similar pattern for the 2012 rants. Take my word for it, when I say that it's for the best. Here's the revised schedule:

Volume 1: 2011
No. 1: Today at 5:00 PM EDT
No. 2: Tomorrow
No. 3: Thursday
No. 4 and No. 5 (?) TBD

UPDATE 2: Vol. I, No. 1 (July, 2011) is now up!

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
Jon Rauch is awesome. Dan Tanna is, obviously, a fan of Greg Pomes.
