Sheffield / Feliciano Put On Wavers -- Pulled Back
via Keith Law's Twitter, ESPN reports:
Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano, two of the more attractive commodities on the New York Mets in a season in which so many players have gotten hurt, were both claimed on waivers -- and then withdrawn by the Mets, meaning that neither player can be traded, sources told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
The Mets placed Sheffield and Feliciano on waivers on Aug. 7, and after each was claimed, the Mets pulled them back. It is not known which teams were awarded the claims, or how seriously the Mets considered dealing one or both players.

Why?
would they pull back Sheff, unless the other team didn’t want to give anything up in trade (I hope). Anything you could get for him would be a huge plus.
Has to be
There was no reason for teams not to claim Sheff. He’s owed virtually nothing, and they know the Mets have no reason to just give him away without getting a return. No reason for any team in the WC hunt not to “block” Sheff from getting claimed by someone else who could actually use him, offer nothing, and watch the Mets pull him back, or worst case scenario get him for free, DFA him, and waste a few hundred thousand.

Any chance they could get a draft pick for him?
What type would he be and what are the chances he even wants to play next year?

Seems unlikely
He’s looking like a Type B, but the Mets would have to offer him arbitration, and then he’d have to agree to sign elsewhere before the deadline (I forget if its in March or Opening Day).

Isnt the deadline May 15?
Or is that the deadline for a team to sign a player that it doesnt offer Arb to?
Maybe you're right
It really shouldn’t matter as long as its before the draft.

He does want to play
and for the Mets, so arb would be tricky if they offered it, especially since his previous contract was so $$$ (even though the Mets are paying it). If they want to keep Sheff, they’re better off just making him a 1 or 2 mil 1 year offer before the arb deadline (I think, sometimes these rules confuse me).
Players don't get less than their last contract in arb do they?
If so it would make offering Sheff or Delgado arbitration hard.
Yup
If they’re 2-6s, they can’t make less than either 80% of their previous year’s salary or 70% of their salary from the season before that.
