There are no words that can express how this picture makes me feel.

A buddy of mine who is a Philly fan

was upset that I found this to be so hilarious. Too bad; it is funny.

Couldn't have happened to a bigger douche

I wouldn’t want to be a cub OF next time they play in CBP. Phillies fans can dream up much worse liquids than beer to throw on you. They might just throw some solids too.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Aug 13, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Also

Why I couldn’t be a sports announcer. I’d still be laughing, as some things are too funny to chastise.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Aug 13, 2009 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Nuts to that

I don’t care if Victorino is a dbag, tossing a beer on a player is fucked up. Same thing with assholes who throw baseballs back onto the field. Just because you paid to get in does not mean you can be an asshole. Boo all you want, or even talk about all the different ways you fucked Wally Joyner’s mother (I saw that in Boston years ago.) I don’t care. But tossing shit at players – especially when they are fielding a ball – is a dick move.

Grission and Husart - that is either the non-union Mexican equivelant of "Starsky and Hutch" or the key to winning the World Series.

I agree

but Dictorino is a dbag.

A tie for my favorite part (of the video) is: a) the announcer saying “thats not what cub fans are about” because it totally is exactly what cub fans are about and b) the phillies phan that was going to fight for victorino’s honor.

by mets81 on Aug 13, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

there are 749 baseball players in MLB that I would agree with you 100% about

luckily, this happened to the only one that I don’t. Victorino has such a record of douchery that literally nothing short of death could happen to him that I wouldn’t chuckle and be happy about.

by cjmulrain on Aug 13, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Phillies Fan Here

I can understand the joy of watching a player you don’t like getting doused. If this were a Mets player, I’d honestly say: “That’s a shitty thing to do,” but some part of me would be like, “Yeah, that’s glorious.”

Now, just to be fair…Victorino did still make the catch. Gotta admit that takes some skill, no?

i'll agree it was a classless move by the cubs fan

but that won’t prevent me from laughing every time i see that picture. Just the way it goes. Nobody was hurt, play was made, and we all got a good laugh at the expense of a player who’s equally classless.

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 13, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, yeah, I agree it was a dick move.

But it’s fucking hysterical.

That's not cool.

Whatever we think of Victorino, we don’t need fan interference like that. That could have injured him or severely damaged eyes. Classless crap like stealing hats and throwing beers, etc, has no place in the game.

You wouldn’t want it happening to Voltron, so don’t be excited to see it happen to another player, no matter how much you dislike him.

You may have Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels, and Lidge...but, WE have Fernando Tatis, baby. Two grand slames in one inning. Hello??

by ZaBlanc on Aug 13, 2009 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

Whatever

Torino’s the foremost douchenozzle in MLB and Voltron isn’t.

by jasondg on Aug 13, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

what's he done?

hafta admit I know nothing about Victorino aside from him as a player.

by wobatus on Aug 13, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm surprised, ZaBlanc

I would have expected that you, of all people, would appreciate the clutchiness of making a catch while getting showered with beer. Also, I can’t really see how beer could severely damage one’s eyes.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 13, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nevermind.

I hadn’t thought about this, but someone at the Good Phight pointed out that the beer shower could have caused Victorino to lose track of the ball, and take it off the face. My AA fantasy team’s had more than enough injuries for one season, thank you very much.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 13, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Great picture

And I love to hate Victorino on the baseball field, but there is no place for that type of behavior. That whole situation could have gotten real ugly. I hope that douche gets prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Victorino would be great in one of those Calvin stickers where he's peeing on things

Caption idea:

“Hey Shane, can you still see strikes from centerfield with THIS in your eye?”

I felt a little guilty when I yelled out “YES!” while watching this live, but then I remembered it’s ratboy and what a douche he is, so I quickly forgave myself. Anyone else in the league, save for Yadier Molina, and this would not be so laughable.

by David G on Aug 13, 2009 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

saw it live

Hilarious. It was a nice toss by the fan. Also, the lone Philly fan out there tossing hot dog buns or whatever he had at the dude was pretty good too.

Me too

I was laughing so hard my roomate ran out of his room to see what was so funny….and I hope that yellow liquid wasn’t beer.

by JDizzzy on Aug 13, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

yes, you shouldnt do that as a fan

but now that it has happened lets all enjoy stupid victorino getting a cup of beer in his stupid face.

Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.

by kendynamo on Aug 13, 2009 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

He's filed a police report

""[The beer thrower is] probably at home laughing right now," Victorino said Thursday. “I just think he should be held accountable, that’s it, nothing more than that. He should be held accountable, that’s it … but it is what it is.”

God, he’s such a wanker. Pissy little bitch, even when he’s trying to be all cool.

Which, wobatus, is what it’s about. It IS about who he is as a baseball player. Whines when it’s coming his direction, but is a total ass on the other side. (Check Metstradamus’s hall of hate for details.) I agree with whomever said it would be unfortunate if it were any of 749 other MLB players, but Victorino — it’s a thing to be relished.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
