Yesterday, we were seeing clear strikes being called balls. I just wanted to check that.

If I was an ump when Ollie was pitching
I would treat it as a half day and just call everything a ball, I’ll only be wrong like 45% of the time.

It’s much worse than that. If we take away swinging strikes, foul balls and balls put into play, and only count called strikes, we’re really talking about 13.5% of Perez’s pitches last night (15 of 111). Basically, the umpire could just call everything that wasn’t swung at a ball and he wouldn’t be in bad shape.

For the season you can get figures from StatCorner. ESPN boxscores have the raw pitch breakdowns for each game, so you just have to divide by the total number of pitches thrown to get the rates.

Even though Ollie was being Ollie yesterday (6BB), I counted 8 strikes being called balls
I know, some were borderline and you won’t get all calls, but he was “less worse” than it seems.
On the other hand, look at those 2 balls outside the graph:
