(vigorously raises hand in the air)
With the village idiots we have on our training staff, yeah this could get horrible.
I listen to death metal music to annoy the hell outta my family!

Yep, me too.
Given the quality of our training staff, I’m somewhat frightened for his career prospects.

I'm more worried that Dubs won't handle it properly
He never wants to miss a game. I hope he doesn’t try to rush back.
With as far out as the team is and as much criticism they got for the handling of Church last year, I think the organization will be overly cautious.
Yeah, it sucked for Church
But for us, it’s good they had that trial run with how to really mismanage a concussion. They’ve taken criticism from all corners for it, so I think they’ll be extra cautious. If not for Church, there would probably have been no hospital trip, and they’d have had Wright out there again tomorrow.
Trial run
That might be all well and good, but you’re assuming that they learned anything from dealing with Church’s concussion. IANAD, but I already knew you don’t put someone who’s concussed on a cross-country flight.

You gotta respect Dubs
toughness.I’m sure if the team was 20 back and he had a broken arm he would still want to play

Concussion treatment
Rest is the best recovery technique. Healing takes time. For headaches, use acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Don’t take aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as these medications can increase the risk of bleeding.
If you or your child sustained a concussion while playing competitive sports, ask your doctor or your child’s sideline doctor when it is safe to return to play. Resuming sports too soon increases the risk of a second concussion and of lasting, potentially fatal brain injury.
No one should return to play or vigorous activity while signs or symptoms of a concussion are present. If signs or symptoms lasted 15 minutes or longer or included loss of consciousness or amnesia, it’s not safe to return to play for at least one week.
Just shut him down for the rest of the year
I don’t want my Franchise player having concussion problems for the rest of his life. And what the hell is Beltran and Jerry smoking. It’s over get him rested for next year.He is clearly our best player and when he went down we should have know it was over

for the love of god yes
the last thing we need is for either of them to pull a church and have to go out again. Scott Rolen should serve as an example here. He got beaned in the head, sat for like a week, played two games then went on the disabled list with post-concussion symptoms, a la Church. Neither of them should be back until they are without a doubt 100% better, even if that means they are done for the season

It's wierd how people say that Beltran is "clearly our best player"
Just as most of the press think Santana is our best player, when our leader in WAR since 2005 when the core was intact has clearly been David Wright. Wright and Beltran are neck and neck, with Wright probably having a slight edge.

I hope Dubs is o.k
Cain should be suspended if not for hitting David then at least for being a douche and tipping his hat to the mets fan
Only in our perfect world could that happen

It's apparent, someone has already created this in the form of a Mets voodoo doll this season.
We have truly been cursed.
Unfortunately, I was raised in the Church.
Dark arts are silly Satanic stuff.

I think that move is being blown a bit out of proportion
The Giants beat writer has the inside story on the tipped hat incident
Cain tipped his cap as he came off the mound, which I’m sure the Mets fans didn’t appreciate. What they couldn’t have known is that the small contingent above the Giants dugout that stood and cheered him weren’t just any group of out-of-town Giants fans. They were the minority owners of the club, along with their families. Bill Neukom, Larry Baer and many of the investors accompanied the team to New York for the series. After Friday night’s loss, they were glad to have something to cheer — finally.
I’d tip my cap to the people who sign my checks, too.

That's nothing new
Go to any game in the league and there are VIPs sitting above the dug out.
Happens at Fenway all the time.
Cain was being a douche and he he knows it. After beaning and nearly killing someone you don’t do that.

Being a Giants fan, it just pains me to see Cain all of a sudden cast as evil, public enemy #1. He’s been a good Giant and everything I’ve heard over the last few years has been positive. He was pretty clearly shaken up by the incident and I think Mets and Giants fans agree that the hitting of Wright was unintentional.
I think it’s possible that the beat writer’s explanation is correct, and I also believe it’s possible that Cain was being bush league. He might have been overreacting to being booed all game for something he feels awful about, which wouldn’t excuse it if he was trying to show up the crowd, but would at least be understandable.
It’s bad enough that something awful like this would happen to Wright. Seems to me it would be a shame to assume the other guy is a horrible human being when the only person who knows for sure what was going through Cain’s head was Cain. Maybe I’m just naive for assuming the best instead of assuming the worst.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I agree it was probably unintentional
He was probably going high and tight to set up a K on the 4th or 5th pitch.
It brings back memories of that maniac Clemens, though. People are bound to get heated up, but I think after they sleep on it they’ll have a better perspective.
"If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it on the scoreboard?"
if david is ok I'll have better perspective, and that could take months to determine
Cain would have been wise to walk off the field with his head down, because he looked like a dick.

It's nothing worth getting bent out of shape over
but it was douchey of Cain. He had to realize the boos that were being reigned upon him and that doffing his cap for all to see would not be taken lightly, all things considered. I’m over it already.
by James Kannengieser on Aug 16, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree
He definitely didn’t do it on purpose, to me, he looked visibly upset that he hit David. Maybe he was being a douche maybe not, but either way, he’s still not as big of an ass as Victorino

Dick move. You lay someone out like that, intentional or not, you just put your head down and take your boos like a decent human being.
Thanks for sharing
The post above from the Giants writer wasn’t based on actual conversation with Cain, but rather wild speculation. It’s nice to see what Cain was actually doing, i.e., facts, rather than what one dude thinks he was doing. In light of these comments, Cain is a pretty big douchebag.

Either Murphy has moved into CitiField (not the Hammer)
Or we are cursed something fierce. I’ve been watching baseball for 15 years and I have never seen this much go wrong in so many varied ways for any one team in one season before the 2009 Mets

DL him
DL him DL him DL him. I don’t care if he wants to play. Just sit him for the rest of the year and focus on 2010. DL him.
Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
As someone mentioned in the game thread
They will probably behead Wright in a day or two to fix this.
"I was so frustrated [Saturday], I [could have said] anything," ~Oliver Perez
It would be nice if by some mismanagement of paperwork
Wright accidentally ends up on the 60 day DL. Santana too. Shut Santana down there is no reason for him to have to pitch 230 innings again this year when they are double digits back. Now it is time to start tanking for real.

Tanking's for losers.
I don’t think we can win the Bryce Harper sweepstakes, so why shut down Johan? If I were Bud Selig (god help me if I were), I would be mighty suspicious of a team that DL’d their ace pitcher out of the blue, especially since he looked very healthy just a day or two before. Your plan sounds like a good way to get smacked down by the commissioner’s office.
by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 16, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
If Bud Selig were still alive,
he’d definitely do something about that.
What the fuck are you talking about?
If they shut down Johan saying his shoulder is tired who is going to say something? Who cares what Bud Selig thinks? Maybe we should keep picking guys at slot in the draft to avoid a big “smack down” by the commissioners office. I would rather have a Johan who looks like he is entering decline mode shut down, in a season that is over, regardless of what Bud Selig thinks.

I don't think it's about winning the top pick so much as
Santana not being a spring chicken anymore and us absolutely not being able to afford anything other than top tier Santana if we want to attempt to compete next season.
absolutely....
my point is just that who gives a shit what Selig thinks?

BTW, I still think someone on the Giants needs to get beaned
When your franchise player gets hit in the head, you have to retaliate. It makes no difference if it was accidental.
And hitting some scrub in the ass with a 80 MPH pitch is not retaliation.
This goes back to Piazza-Clemens as the Mets looking like pussies.
If “the book” on Wright is to bust him inside, opposing pitchers have to have some fear in their mind that if they miss and hit him, there will be consequences. Otherwise, we’ll see more and more of this.
I disagree

Santana threw behind their best hitter and then pegged their catcher/cleanup hitter in the following at bat. By the way, that alleged scrub hit a GW HR off our relief ace later in the game.

That was nine years ago. There isn’t a coach or player on this team that had anything to do with those incidents. It seems like this has more to do with the chip on your shoulder from that disappointing series than it does with anything regarding this sorry 2009 group of Mets.
If "the book" on Wright is to bust him inside, opposing pitchers have to have some fear in their mind that if they miss and hit him, there will be consequences. Otherwise, we’ll see more and more of this.
What sort of consequences? The normal procedure for these situations is:
1, Pitcher on Team A hits hitter on Team B.
2, Pitcher on Team B retaliates by pegging hitter on Team A.
3, Benches clear, flailing punches are or aren’t thrown, ejections are or aren’t made.
4, Game resumes. Arbitrary suspensions are leveled two days later.
Nothing is accomplished and the initiating pitcher certainly doesn’t have to worry about retaliation or retribution since pitchers are almost never beaned. The fact is that if an opposing pitcher thinks that Wright’s weak spot is up and in, he’s going to throw the ball there. Let’s not pretend that this is a matter of deterrence, it’s a matter of pride and stupidity.
Deterrence
I definitely think it’s part of deterrence. If you think about it, that is the where throwing “up and in” stems from. Why do pitchers throw up and in? To deter hitters from diving out over the plate.
The problem comes when pitchers get too comfortable throwing up and in. There has to be an equal detterent on the pitcher’s side, other than the fact that Wright gets first base if you bean him.
Now, say Wright was fine after being hit, and was playing today. Do you honestly think it would be likely that any of the Giant pitchers would hit him, even accidentally? No, probably not. Probably after beaning him Saturday, they would be “extra careful” not to hit him today.
But, in other series, against other teams, if everyone knows that you can hit Wright and suffer no consequences for it, then of course teams will be more bold and more aggressive about throwing inside on him. And that’s when pitches “accidentally” get too far inside.
On the other hand, if every time Wright gets hit, the best player on the other team gets hit, then of course opposing pitchers will be a little more careful.
No Cardinal pitcher would bean Wright if they knew for certain it would result in Pujols getting the same. They’d be more careful when coming inside, which is all I’m asking for.
I don't believe in the deterrence factor
A pitcher will do what he thinks is necessary to get a hitter out, whether that includes throwing in, out, up, down, wherever. When Yadier Molina calls a 1-2 fastball up and in, I can’t believe that Kyle Lohse is carefully considering the ramifications of whether that pitch might miss its target and hit the batter, which would set off a chain reaction eventually resulting in his star teammate being drilled as penance. He’s just not considering all that before making the pitch – he’s nodding and firing with minimal thought.
Nice Z, I agree with you completely.

Wright has PCS.

If Pelfrey was any kind of man, the first pitch of the game is right at the guy’s ribs.
So what if he gets run. The season is over anyway.
And who's going to pitch for us when he misses his next
start b/c he’s suspended. Look, Santana threw a warning pitch behind Sandoval, and he hit Molina. It’s done. What do you want, a guy taken out on a stretcher?
