Wow

I did not think they had the balls to do this

I'll be happy when the team announces Figgy gets the starts.

I just hope it’s not Redding.

i was just complaining

earlier today that i was going to get stuck attending another livan start. i had already seen him get shelled for 17 earned in 15 2/3 this year. now i’ll get to complain about having to attend another redding start.

Is their nobody in the Minors

That can come up?After Niese do we have any good pitchers in AAA?

by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 20, 2009 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Gee had shoulder surgery, the rest of the AAA rotation is already here.

Simple.

Short answer: No. Long answer: Nope.

by The 'Ropolitans on Aug 20, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

An honor

I saw Livan’s last start for the Mets. A day I’ll never forget.

by The 'Ropolitans on Aug 20, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent move.

Now we also save money by only having to spend 1/2 as much on the clubhouse buffet.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 20, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

For all the hate we heap upon Livan

He gave us some decent (albeit lucky as hell) starts at the beginning of the season. He never shoulda been counted on to last more than 10-12 starts

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Aug 20, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

Oh

of course not. But Livan was exactly what we expected. The angst against Maine and Ollie are well warranted

Not true...

The pizza delivery guys in Flushing will all be in tears tonight (assuming he tips at all).

Since the, though...

Month — ERA — WHIP
April — 6.75 — 1.453
May — 2.70 — 1.380
June — 3.69 — 1.359
July — 7.33 — 1.889
August — 1.30 — 2.372

by The 'Ropolitans on Aug 20, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

O duh

I was looking at that trying to figure out why August was bad, I didn’t realize that his WHIP was up over 2, thanks.

OMG.

Hubbuch:

Tim Redding is filling Livan Hernandez’s start Saturday.

by The 'Ropolitans on Aug 20, 2009 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Horrible.

Not rewarding Nelson Figueroa — a guy who pitched his ass off in AAA.

by All Shook Down on Aug 20, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Horrible performance

But 3.00 tRA in AAA is nothing to sneeze at. Sure, he’s nothing but a AAAA pitcher, but rewarding him for a job well done is the right thing to do. Following the season, the Mets are going to have to scour the list of minor-league free agents to significantly upgrade their holes at AA and AAA. Showing sought-after MiLB free agents that you reward good organizational players could be a considerable recruiting tool.

by All Shook Down on Aug 20, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

This move makes an ass out of Jerry Manuel

And rightfully so. Given three chances to take Livan’s ass out of the rotation, Jerry didn’t. Hopefully, Manuel is given his release too.

This also saves the Mets the embarrassment of having Livan Hernandez start the game following the Mets 1969 Celebration.

by All Shook Down on Aug 20, 2009 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

I hope they stick with Manuel, even if they decide to fire him at seasons end.

An interm manager can only impress Wilpon with a fluke hot streak. I’d rather take our time in the offseason, when we can actually do the job right.

This is a possible good sign

They had no patience for Jerry’s: “that guy won me a ring.” Maybe (hopefully!) they have no patience for Jerry in general.

by SupT on Aug 20, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That is a good point

Jerry’s only case is that Redding and Figgy appeared his only alternatives. But to cut him after Jerry said he would pitch shows how little influence Jerry has and is kind of a bitch slap to Jerry. Maybe Omar doesn’t like the way he is running things right now? As if it’s Jerry’s fault he’s got these guys. That sounds like Omar-type logic. Omar Lobby Jerry for Redding start.

This made my day, regardless if it’s 9 starts too late and really makes little difference.

I will miss the fat jokes most of all.

I hate that Redding has the start

But I can’t say I’m sad to see Livan go. Hopefully Wags will pitch really well.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
