Do you like this story?
Comments
Happ has a 4.22 FIP and a 4.73 xFIP, but a 2.66 ERA
Regression needed. Will the Mets bring it?
Nothing to do with the Mets, but...
Did you see the story that punts are hitting the giant video screen that hangs over the field at the Cowboys’ new stadium?
Jerry Jones says he has no plans to move it. That’s hilarious.
I saw that on Ken Tremendous's Twitter
http://twitter.com/KenTremendous/status/3478706419
Now that is a choice stadium clusterfuck. Why does a stadium need to be like watching television, anyhow? Is that screen just the ownership conceding that you can’t see the game from the nosebleed seats?
Yeah he does pitch better vs Philly
And so does Ollie. If we play our cards right we could take 3/4

that would be a moral victory at least
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 22, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Moral Victories don't count
When we rallied against the Diamondbacks from 6-0 to lose 6-5, that was considered a moral victory. This isn’t little league.
when you're a mets fan moral victories are all we have
thats why Frenchy and Omir hitting the .300 OBP in the same week was like our world series

Another gem from Tim McCarver
during the Yanks-Sawx game. He said it’s too bad that, like Mike Scioscia, Terry Francona wasn’t recognized as a “great” manager until he won a World Series. I’m guessing that’s because Francona managed for 4 seasons before 2004, with a record of 285-363. (Scioscia won the WS in his 3rd year, after going 157-167.)
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
that's fine and good
but seriously, managerial W-L records are like ten times more meaningless even than pitchers’ W-L records. At least pitchers actually play the game.
Well, yeah
But W-L is the only stat really used to evaluate managers. Judging by Francona’s W-L with the Phillies, he was anything but “great”.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
and in the AL they're even more meaningless because they dont have to do anything

I never saw 69
so I’ll go with 86 that Series vs the Astros was great and who could forget good old Buckner
by Jadden Hopkins on Aug 22, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions
i'm a bit too young to have enjoyed either at the time.
had to watch them all in retrospect.
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 22, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions
tough to argue contrarywise
Lets hope that when gut check time comes again the Mets will pass it with flying colors.
IMO, they're equally awesome
The ’86 Mets won more regular season games, but their playoff series were more dramatic (which was also awesome). But the ’69 Mets are the benchmark for miracle seasons and gigantic upsets.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
oh definitely not taking anything away from the 86 mets
its just when i think mets WS the first thing that comes to mind is Miracle Mets
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 22, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, I'm sure
I never saw either of them, so it would be dumb for me to try to choose between them.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
Let's hope it doesn't rain
That would really ruin the legacy of Howie’s comments.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
it'll rain as soon as he walks off the field
thereby never raining on the 69 mets

He's pretty awful,
and he hasn’t had a UZR/150 above 0 since 2004 at any position he’s played. The ability to play multiple positions poorly doesn’t make up for the inability to hit.

"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner
I really try not to nitpick...
but wouldn’t this ceremony been more apropos to open the stadium? You would have run absolutely no risk of doing this in a throw away stadium, and would have been able to head off the year-long criticism of having no connection to the past.
Even if the Mets were in first place in a dogfight for a division title this would have been better done at the start of the season. Just me.

Wow we really do suck ass

No one streams the games anymore. Not even this one.
Redding to Santos

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
side note
can we all agree not to predict the mets as world champions next year, whenever a bunch of people do that (like this year) it always gets fucked up
"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner
No problem
When we have no player capable of hitting 20 HR, and one good pitcher, it should be pretty easy not to predict a WS title.
Wright and beltran aren't capable of hitting 20 homers?
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Frenchy can hit 20...
I bet he can get his RBI total higher than his OBP.

I’m still trying to figure out why Omar put Sheff on waivers, then pulled him back without trying to make a deal.
Makes no sense, no how…
because if he let him go, we'd have negative offense.
and besides….why can’t Sheff be 2010’s Marlon Anderson ?.

It's getting worse...
I swear that starting pitchers now just pitch for a “win”, throwing as many pitches as needed to make 5, and only 5 IP.
I’ve never seen so many 100+ pitch counts in 5 IP as this year.
it would be rationale behavior on their part
save their arms and add to their states. managers let them get away with it.

Yeah, I know.
There’s really no incentive for a SP to pitch more than 5 innings. Their stuff isn’t going to get any better as the game goes on, and they get the “W” after 5.
Serious question...
So seriously, does Redding just leave the park at this point? I assume he’s getting his arm iced, but is he supposed to sit around for the next hour, or is he free to just beat the traffic and leave?

I seriously hadn’t followed the Mets in so long I’d forgotten how it feels to actually want them to win, and watch them lose, and watch Jerry Manuel “manage” his way out of a boner throughout the game.

His BABIP is .347, which is slightly higher than his career mark of .333. But his LD% is 21%, his highest since 2005, so he is hitting the ball hard. I’d say he’s been moderately lucky but his BA is not a fluke.

Mets fans get so frustrated about losing...
That they condemn fellow fans, just to take out their anger. I know, it’s been a disappointing season, just suck it up, and we’ll get them next year.
But your reasoning for us losing is asinine
No team loses for lack of trying or leadership, they lose because other teams are better or sometimes, just have bad luck in a game or two
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I didn't say that was the main reason though...
All I said is that we don’t show no determination to come back. Were the kind of team that has to score first, then play from behind. That’s not so much from a talent standpoint, but lack of drive. Yes, I know, were a bad team, but to totally downplay my argument as if it was false, is just as asinine.

by Abstract NYC on Aug 22, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
How can the Yankees score 20 one day and 1 the next
A new game has different results. The pitching can be better on one day, it’s not completely controlled by the hitters. Or maybe the hitters had a good day and then a bad day. Your argument is really retarded. This team just isn’t good right now, it has nothing to do with wanting it less than the other teams.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Thats irrelevant...
When the Mets play they give Johan no run support. Why is it a coincidence especially when Johan pitches. Are you telling me that the team doesn’t get complacent and it’s all because of the offense, and not the fact that they depend on Johan to pitch 1 run ball every outing?
by Abstract NYC on Aug 22, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Last 10 Johan Santana starts we scored
2 runs
4 runs
5 runs
7 runs
7 runs
4 runs
5 runs
4 runs
0 runs
3 runs
In four of those we scored 5+ runs three others 4 runs. That’s run support, not ridiculous, easy win run support but still solid. He’s been given on average 4.75 runs per 9 innings, second on the team to Pelfrey. But please, don’t let the facts get in the way of your argument.
