At least

this means Thole will be added to the 40-man roster and can’t be plucked this winter the way Jesus Flores was a few years back. It’s a completely different situation, really, but the chance of Thole being left unprotected was greater than zero.

Shawn Bowman needs to be protected as well this winter.

I’d hope he’d get a look in September.

more a failure "on the part of the Mets"

but the list isn’t necessarily exhaustive. Let’s see what happens.

Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa

Both Thole and Evans better start most if not every game.

If they bring up Thole, he'd better be playing.

I’m fine with seeing Evans in a situational role.

Evans/Murph platoon, perhaps?

I doubt it, but I also wouldn’t mind seeing how they do as a tandem.

Eh

Not really, the EL season is only another week or two long anyway, so its not like he’d be playing if he wasn’t called up. The reason he should be playing isn’t so much concern over his development so much as to find out if he really is the best offensive catcher in the organization, which seems possible, if not likely.

Evans in a situational role

Unless we’ve given up on him ever being anything but a lefty masher, I’d like to see him get ABs against RHPs too.

by JoshNY on Aug 23, 2009 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions

It might be reasonable to give up

It’s nice to see, after early struggles, that Evans has gotten back nearer to where he was a year ago. But at 23, it’s not really enough for him to get back to where he was at 22. If he were going to be a big leaguer, I would have expected to see him continue to progress.

Even at AA this year he only had an .817 OPS. At AAA he hit .204 with a .674 OPS. It just looks to me like he’s topping out. If he’s not yet a decent full time player at AAA, he’s not likely to be one in the majors. With a .620 OPS vs. RH pitching in AAA this year, and a .694 OPS vs RH pitching in AA, it’s pretty clear that giving him AB against RH pitching in MLB right now isn’t going to be very productive.

by acerimusdux on Aug 23, 2009 5:43 AM EDT up reply actions

He did have a ridiculously low BABIP early in the year.

I still think he could be a good backup or platoon guy.

by Evan_S on Aug 23, 2009 6:28 AM EDT up reply actions

He also is ridculous against lefties

.341/.407/.512/.919 in 91 PA’s
Murphy is .273/.342/..404/.747 against righties in 482 PA’s

Evans certainly would have a case for a ML spot due to his performance vs lefties,

but keeping him in AAA at least gives him regular at bats. I think he’ll be a useful part going forward, if for nothing else than he’s a cheap part for the bench that can play a few different places.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 23, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

If he kept progressing, it looked like he had a chance to be a starter. I think he’s still a useful bench guy, and it will be good to have him up.

And, he is still somewhat young. Maybe not a real good future starter, but he could still be decent player by his peak at ages 26-28. Think of a guy like Nady who didn’t make the majors until age 24 and didn’t break an .800 OPS before age 28.

by acerimusdux on Aug 24, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Well the Kunz thing makes little sense, but the other 2 are good.

I was thinking they wouldn’t be smart enough to get Thole onto the 40 man roster and let he be Jesus Flores part II.

I would rather see Bostick called up than Kunz, but the other two sure should be here. Wouldn’t it be nice to see Thole be able replicate (to some degree) his contact ability against ML pitchers?

by Balagast on Aug 23, 2009 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

The Kunz thing is fine.

It’s not like we’re in a pennant race. What’s he going to do, lose us a game? We lose the majority of them anyway. I hope we call Bostick up as well, but having a ton of bodies in the bullpen isn’t going to hurt.

So sad about Kunz

His upside is now as a groundball-inducing ROOGY. Bad pick.

by OlStubbleBeard on Aug 23, 2009 12:35 AM EDT reply actions

But what about the saves!

Won’t someone please think about the saves!

by Reg Dunlop on Aug 23, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Man, I hadn't realized Kunz had been that bad

5.25 FIP and a 4.91 ERA despite a .255 BABIP…oh well, he had a 3.03 FIP in AA last year and is only 23. Gotta hope for the best.

by Pat Andriola on Aug 23, 2009 1:38 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah he's been awful

The nicest thing you can say about him is he does have a crazy high HR/FB, so he’s probably not quite as awful as his Triple-A run rates suggest.

i would

put murphy at third and keep wright on the dl, just to see if murphy can somehow hit again..then put evans at first for the rest of the season

If we leave Wright on the DL when he's healthy enough to play,

it’s not going to sit well with David. Do you really want to piss off the face of the franchise just to get Murphy and Evans in the lineup together? If Wright is healthy, let him play.

I would be cautious though and maybe leave him out until mid September instead of September 1, just to be safe.

Some of us are trying to win fantasy leagues.

by mets81 on Aug 23, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha

I’ve got him in the AA league, and coincidentally fell out of first place for the first time in months right after Wright went down. I bounced back a bit last night though, got back within 6 points of Gina just glad you guys left Mike Lowell out there :P.

Really pissed that I finally let myself drop Marmol, oh, five days before he was handed the closer gig though. That was irritating. Brandon Inge was just too tempting as a supplement for Mike Napoli, who Mike Scioscia needs to trust more. But alas, it was a luxury I did not need and should have ignored.

Hey, you could be doing worse.

I drafted Peavy, Quentin, Hamilton, Doumit, Valverde, Chris Young (the pitcher), Ervin Santana, and Mike Aviles. I think I lead the league in games lost to injury.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 23, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Ouch, that's rough

Most of those guys were preseason risks though. I had Quentin, Hamilton, Doumit, and Santana as guys I was trying to avoid unless they fell pretty far below their ADP.

by Mark Himmelstein on Aug 23, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't want Doumit.

My laptop froze up repeatedly during the draft trying to check Fangraphs, and it gave me a few guys I didn’t ask for. Doumit, Jose Guillen, Jose Lopez, Dicktorino. Okay, that one actually worked out.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 23, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

When was he going? Around the 10th? He actually seemed like a decent value there, but there was interesting catcher value earlier on.

by Mark Himmelstein on Aug 23, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, he went 10th.

To be honest, even if I’d gotten to make all of my picks, I doubt I’d be doing much better. I did intentionally take Quentin, Derrek Lee, Young, Aviles, Howie Kendrick, and Hong-Chi Kuo. I hope there’s enough interest to do another league next year; I really need to do better. At least I’m 3rd in my H2H league.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Aug 23, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice

I’d definitely be in for another league next year. The AA draft was honestly the first ever live draft I did. I did fantasy once before, but I couldn’t make the draft so it auto-drafted. It was a crappy MLB public points league anyway, still managed to win it too lol (it was back in 2007 and I managed to pick up BJ Upton, Ryan Braun, and Carlos Pena as free agents after the season started). This year I wound up doing another Yahoo public league after the AA league cause I was so happy with how the draft went, and I’m crushing that league, I literally haven’t been out of first place for more than a day or two since April.

Carp's been awesome

Whoever drafted him in the AA league dropped him when he got hurt, and I managed to pick him up as a FA and stash him on my DL for a few weeks, and he’s been huge since coming back. I have Wainwright too, but him I drafted. Plus Lincecum and Ted Lilly, I’ve managed to survive Cole Hamels’ brutal ERA enough so that he’s actually been a help in the other categories for the most part.

I hate the Mets

they announce this the day after I agreed to use my remaining Nationals coupons to by tickets to the Nats-Phillies series in a few weeks so a few of my friends would come down. I figured I had no reason to watch the Mets, now I do and I have no coupons left. Bastards.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
