i don't hold any bitterness for pedro
he was an older pitcher, the injury risk was always there. He was decent when he was healthy.
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I just don't understand why people from New York love him so much.
His impact as a Met really wasn’t as big as they make it out to be.
the one thing he did was give the team credibility which let them sign other guys
from a strict performance perspective he was ok but nothing special
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
While I'll agree with that
it’s Pedro Martinez. One of the best Left handed pitchers to ever pitch. And he’s class.
With that said, I still want Ollie to do what Ollie can do against the Phils today and our bats to come out swinging.
by MetsFan4Decades on Aug 23, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions
he's a hall of famer no doubt
but came to the mets past his prime. I think what he did for the team was more in his ability to give us the air of a contender than actually which brought in other talented free agents, than make us a contender with his pitching.
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't harbor any grudge
But I don’t blame anyone who does. He did absolutely nothing after ’05, regardless of any players he may/may not have helped bring in.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
i dont think he's worth a grudge
i just dont think he did enough as a met to have strong feelings one way or another
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
the one thing he did, and did very well was to strut on the field with his chest out.
which is more than most current Mets can say except maybe for Reyes, and even he doesn’t know how to do that right to this day.
true he had the air of a comepetetor about him
but if pride were so important, why isnt it on the scoreboard?
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm rooting for Petey today.
I hope he does well, and I hope Lidge blows it in the 9th. In the meantime….
Screw Oliver Perez and his paranoia.
Screw Jerry Manuel and his gangsta crap.
Screw Omar Minaya, you know what I’m sayin’.
i wouldnt mind a pitchers duel
with lidge giving it away
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
LOL
Before today’s game, Jerry Manuel said Gary Sheffield tweaked his wrist lifting weights, but should be available to pinch hit.
maybe lifting weights is a euphemism
for hurting his wrist doing something else….

Darling with the Beethoven reference
Nothing can get by him; especially in a small room: Mike Francessa
But now, after this
I might have to re-evaluate these BS notions of players that rise to the occasion against the best to beat the best, or players that win on Sundays in May with humidity at 55%-65%.
“Right Gary, we might have to use more tangiable forms of player evaluation, especially given the treasure trove of data at our fingertips.”
“Yeah Ron, I mean, those stat guys have a way of being right. Hell, I called Murphy a future batting champion. Maybe I should shut up.”

Victorino is scrappy
That’s why the Phillies won a championship, blah blah blah.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
man he's wild today
it looks like he’s dropped that delay at the top of his leg kick that seemed to be settling him down. is that just cause he’s pitching out of the stretch or did he not do it for the leadoff guy too?
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions
He definately
has a problem pitching out of the stretch. I noticed that in his last two starts.
by MetsFan4Decades on Aug 23, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
it seems like the pause at the top of his leg kick really fixed a lot of his mechanical issues
but he’s not doing it at the moment.
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
i'd rather see him do it and give up the occasional extra stolen base
than keep walking everyone

someone on the radio was bitching that yesterday the Mets only gave out 25,000 shirts to the fans, and at least half went to philly fans who were saying they were gonna burn them and wash their cars, etc.
great planning by the mets front office.

The odds on that happening are astronomical
but with the mets, there was a 20 percent chance of that.
What's worse?
Triple play to end the game, or dropped fly ball to lose the game?
Both in one season.

That was just luck

but dude, Eric Brumlett has a lead glove. So the two errors are low probability, but not even in the same stratosphere as an unassisted triple play; only the 12th in the regular season in the history of the game.

Sure, but I'm not like, overwhelmingly disappointed
If they’d been working some good ABs, drawn a walk, gotten some knocks, that’d be one thing. But they were basically handed an opportunity, and then had it taken away. The only thing you can really give the Mets hitters credit for is putting the ball in play. And we all know once that happens, the next part is beyond significant control.

The way this season has gone, and the way my interest has dwindled, I wasn’t swearing and throwing shit the way I did when Castillo dropped the ball. Jerry what the fuck were you doing
you tried to stay out of the double play, and you got the triple play
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
haha
thats a pretty good summation of what happened
by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
it's not jerry's fault
and if you look at the play, castillo started to run and then murphy followed.
it wasn’t called.

Hey I didn't know they went on their own
So kind of uncalled for. I was just looking at gameday, and assumed Jerry sent them
its a jerry thing to do

Yeah, I noticed that too
We should see how many “firejerry…” screen names we can amass.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
Not even the islanders
are this embarrassing.we should start wearing bags over our heads like Lions Fans
The amazing thing
is that we’re still only 10 games under .500. By all rights we should be in the playoff race, but injuries, managerial/front office decisions, and just about everything else have gotten in the way.
2009 Mets---Mission: .500!
I can't believe some people are blaming Jerry for this
Who the fuck could have possibly seen an unassisted triple play coming???

im not putting it all on jerry

Did he send the runners?
But why even do it?

To stay out of the double play
I don’t think it’s a bad call as much as it is philosophical. A routine ground ball may score a run but obviously leaves you with two out. The line drive triple play is really a once in a lifetime play to end a game.

I was on Gameday
So, did the second baseman cover second? Where was it hit?

hit on a line at 2b as he covered second. he caught it (one) in one motion stepped on the bag (two; runner who had been at 2nd is out for not tagging), and (three) tagged out murphy going from first to 2nd.

I think its kind of awesome actually
I mean, its not an indictment of anyone in particular, but hell, it was exciting, and its not costing the Mets draft position, so whats the harm? Yeah yeah, I hate the Phillies as much as anyone, but whatevz, they’re doing what they do and doing it a lot better than the Mets right now

It is interesting
and I’m already laughing, but you can hardly be surprised by the frustration level when you just have a season where EVERYTHING that could possibly go wrong goes horribly, wickedly wrong.
As bad as Omar and Jerry are, they’re not historically bad.; just kinda garden variety bad. But this season is like some sort Angel Heart-style unholy revenge.

No, but only because of the relative places in the standings then versus now
Solely on the merits of the play this is much much worse. It’s easy to forget, the Mets still had an at bat after the drop where this play ended the game.
