Fuck Pedro

getting a good season and a half in four years isn’t good.

by painiac on Aug 23, 2009 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

i don't hold any bitterness for pedro

he was an older pitcher, the injury risk was always there. He was decent when he was healthy.

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don't understand why people from New York love him so much.

His impact as a Met really wasn’t as big as they make it out to be.

by painiac on Aug 23, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

While I'll agree with that

it’s Pedro Martinez. One of the best Left handed pitchers to ever pitch. And he’s class.

With that said, I still want Ollie to do what Ollie can do against the Phils today and our bats to come out swinging.

by MetsFan4Decades on Aug 23, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

he's a hall of famer no doubt

but came to the mets past his prime. I think what he did for the team was more in his ability to give us the air of a contender than actually which brought in other talented free agents, than make us a contender with his pitching.

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't harbor any grudge

But I don’t blame anyone who does. He did absolutely nothing after ’05, regardless of any players he may/may not have helped bring in.

i dont think he's worth a grudge

i just dont think he did enough as a met to have strong feelings one way or another

by KeithsMoustache on Aug 23, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

the one thing he did, and did very well was to strut on the field with his chest out.

which is more than most current Mets can say except maybe for Reyes, and even he doesn’t know how to do that right to this day.

by fxcarden on Aug 23, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

true he had the air of a comepetetor about him

but if pride were so important, why isnt it on the scoreboard?

I'm rooting for Petey today.

I hope he does well, and I hope Lidge blows it in the 9th. In the meantime….

But now, after this

I might have to re-evaluate these BS notions of players that rise to the occasion against the best to beat the best, or players that win on Sundays in May with humidity at 55%-65%.

“Right Gary, we might have to use more tangiable forms of player evaluation, especially given the treasure trove of data at our fingertips.”

“Yeah Ron, I mean, those stat guys have a way of being right. Hell, I called Murphy a future batting champion. Maybe I should shut up.”

If they’d been working some good ABs, drawn a walk, gotten some knocks, that’d be one thing. But they were basically handed an opportunity, and then had it taken away. Wow

could’ve been loaded with no outs. Instead of game over

Or

Castillo may well have scored
9-8, runners on first and second, no outs.

Anything

Would’ve been better than a triple play

can end a game with an unassisted triple play

Not true

I believe the Mets are the third team to do so.

I think its kind of awesome actually

I mean, its not an indictment of anyone in particular, but hell, it was exciting, and its not costing the Mets draft position, so whats the harm? Yeah yeah, I hate the Phillies as much as anyone, but whatevz, they’re doing what they do and doing it a lot better than the Mets right now

It is interesting

and I’m already laughing, but you can hardly be surprised by the frustration level when you just have a season where EVERYTHING that could possibly go wrong goes horribly, wickedly wrong.

As bad as Omar and Jerry are, they’re not historically bad.; just kinda garden variety bad. But this season is like some sort Angel Heart-style unholy revenge.

Definitely, a compound clusterfuck

I’m pretty sure the season would have gone better if they’d just forced everyone to do whippets before every game.

No, but only because of the relative places in the standings then versus now

Solely on the merits of the play this is much much worse. It’s easy to forget, the Mets still had an at bat after the drop where this play ended the game.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
