WHAT HAPPENED

I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THE GAME STARTED

But I guess it’s better when the pain happens suddenly, as opposed to mulling it over and thinking about it and dreading it.

Could you guys please bet them once in this series?

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

Hypothetical case for the offseason:

Assume the Mets will spend most of their $ resources on SP, but can trade for 1 power bat. This power bat can play 1st or the outfield. Your choice of player to trade is Pagan or Murphy. Who do you move ?.

but with this awful lineup, I can see why they did it.

by fxcarden on Aug 24, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

so then yes,

what rollins said was correct. in fact, most of the commentary i heard (strategy-wise) says that managers will say the only reason you DONT try to steal on that pitch is because you might wind up getting doubled off with a line drive….which happened.

rollins said what most baseball experts agree with: it was not a smart baseball move but the mets had to try something to win the game. quit whining about rollins stating a fact of baseball.

Idea for the Wilpons...

I want to see the new stadium, so I’m going to try to go to the 9/15 game against the Nationals. Painful, huh? Two scrub teams battling for nothing.

So I was thinking, they should sell tickets to the stadium on days when the Mets aren’t playing. I would actually prefer to go then, because it would be less crowded, and I won’t have to be embarrassed and pissed off watching this team butcher the game of baseball for 3 hours.

On an off day, I could spend a pleasant hour or two walking around the ballpark, eat a hot dog, watch the bridge, the planes, etc. Maybe Mr. Met could make an appearance, but that wouldn’t be a deal-breaker.

The only potential problem is the Mets may start drawing bigger crowds to “off days” than they would for game days.

Anyway, it makes a lot of sense to me, since the new stadium is pretty much the only reason people are showing up these days.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
