According to SNY.tv. The Red Sox have agreed to decline Wagner's option but will retain the right to offer him arbitration. The two players to be named later will be from AA, according to Hubbuch.

Here's the stats on everyone who has played for Portland, Boston's AA team, this year.

Here's a list of Boston's prospects.

The Mets seemed pretty eager to get Wagner to waive his no-trade clause, which would seemingly indicate they really wanted the salary relief, or did not want offer him arbitration this offseason. More analysis when we figure out who the Mets will be receiving.

Is there a timetable on when they will name the PTBNLs?

Do they have to wait until the end of the season or like a week or what? Is there a deadline for this sort of thing or it is completely at the disrection (sp?) of the teams involved? PTBNLs always confuse me.

Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.

Wags was one of my favorite Mets.

I’m not happy right now, but I understand the Mets’ predicament.

I just hope these two PTBNL’s are worth something.

Good Luck to Wags, and I hope he gets the ring he deserves.

that would be a phenomenal haul.

i can’t imagine that would actually be the case though.

by firejerrymanuel on Aug 25, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

These guys are both C+ prospects, right? That seems the best-case scenario we can hope for at this point.

We probably could have gotten a legitimate prospect if we threw in money but this was obviously more of a salary dump than anything else.

I’m thinking the best we can hope for is one of those two and a nothing prospect. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

by DannyMetsGeek on Aug 25, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure a legit prospect would have come just from paying some salary

We’re still talking about a late 30s pitcher coming off major elbow surgery.

by Gina on Aug 25, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tazawa is now in the majors. I doubt its him seriously......

anyway being from Greenville, SC I get to enjoy Greenville Drive games which are the Red Sox’s A team.

I really enjoyed watching Felix Doubront, Ryan Kalish, and Josh Reddick. Those 3 stand out at me.

I think Doubront has promise as a starter. I belive in 2008 he had more Ks than innings pitched (im not totally sure on that as I havent checked stats). Kalish and Reddick are positional players. I highly doubt we get Lars Anderson or Tazawa but that would be totally kick ass.

by RIPShea on Aug 25, 2009 2:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i'd scale down a lot of our expectations

there is no chance we get anderson, tazawa, kalish or reddick.

by firejerrymanuel on Aug 25, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep

I checked Doubront’s stats from 2008 with the Greenville Drive.

109 innings pitched, 111 Ks and 23 BBs. Granted that was Single A but his GB to FB was 42 to 34 which doesn’t seem really great. The kid is left handed and only 21 years of age. I really like him

by RIPShea on Aug 25, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's temper our excitement

He’s 87-91 with an injury history and mediocre control. He’s a ceiling back-end guy.

He’s one of the guys I hope we got given the information we have, but he’s probably not even a B prospect.

haven't his injuries

been non throwing arm related though?

by firejerrymanuel on Aug 25, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Injuries

He supposedly battled “injuries” that year with the hernia surgery being the big one.

The Red Sox thought enough of the guy to put him on the 40-man and protect him from the Rule V draft. He’s not insignificant but no great shakes from what I see.

My issue has always been that the mets should make enough money that, unless the Wilpons are just trying to squeeze as much profit out of everything they have, the Wilpons personal finances shouldn’t be forcing them to cut 3.5 million dollar salaries. We all know these prospects are going to suck, and there’s no way they’re going to be more valuable than the draft picks the Mets would get if they offered him arbitration and he signed somewhere else.

Well if we're going to be completely honest

Then we might as well ALL jump on the Pirates bandwagon, since they suck enough that we could go through enough losing seasons before they turn it around to be considered legit fans, since we know the mets front office will continue to do stupid and prevent us from obtaining anything other than tears.

If we werent getting anything of signifgance in return for him I feel we should have helf on to him for the year, ate the money owed to him, let him showcase his stuff and durability and then offered him arbitration in the offseason. agreed

it seems unlikely the mets, given the financial situation they’re in, were going to gamble 3.5 million on billy pitching well enough the rest of the year to make it abundantly certain that a team would sacrifice their first round pick on signing him and that he wouldn’t get shut out this winter and come back to the mets for 8-10 million.

try selling that to the wilpons, who would then have the honor of paying those two picks, which i’m sure they’d love to do.

that's understandable

but disappointing for a team playing in new york with a $140 million payroll. they should be more concerned about the long-term value of two draft picks over the short-term value of saving $3.5 million.

by englishgrey on Aug 25, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

But Carter may well be a bit undervalued. He does have above average power. He’s a pretty piss poor fielder, both according to reports and TotalZone, but there’s some offensive potential. 10.3% HR/BIA in Triple-A last year, 7.1% this year, those marks are very good and decent, respectively. And that’s paired with a pretty decent contact rate, too, and no significant platoon split. BB% is meh, but he puts the ball in play enough. He could be a useful player next year.

and RE: his "smarts"

at least he’s conscious of his failings, unlike francine.

you can’t get better if you don’t admit you’re flawed.

is he really that different from russell branyan, minus branyan’s better ability to draw walks?

and keep in mind that carter has always been able to hit lefties for avg/OBP, just minus some power, a claim that branyan could never make.

by firejerrymanuel on Aug 25, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Branyan can also field a little bit, but I agree that otherwise seems like he could be a similar value. The contact rate could/should make up for the BB% difference, though we’ll have to see how well Carter’s power plays at Citi.

My only question

Is if its Carter, why does he have to be a PTBNL? Is it just that the two teams cut it so close to the deadline that the official submission was listed as PTBNLs so the details could be worked out?

Don’t they normally submit a list of players to pick from, and the team decides later?

The PTBNL list was probably Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, or Chris Carter.

hes on the 40man

wouldnt he have to go through waivers or something? not sure

by viktor06 on Aug 25, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is that true?

In a way that makes sense, but it seems a bit strange, in that it would make a trade like this virtually impossible to pull off after the deadline. Why wouldn’t anyone claim Carter? You’d think the first time in line would be willing to add a player like this if only for depth.

nobody said

they put him on waivers yet

they could give him to us after this season.

by firejerrymanuel on Aug 25, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, its just kind of a shame

It’d be nice to get a look at him for a month this year.

Chris Carter is "of significance"?

Whatever…I knew we wouldn’t get anything for Wagner, so no big deal. Firstbaseman like Carter are a dime a dozen, every team has 10 of them.

The Sox have way too many 1B, and that was before getting Kotchman. Carter is the worst of their 1B depth, but maybe he becomes our top 1B. Who knows.

Who are the 10 Chris Carters in the Mets organization?

At this point

We don’t have 10 (healthy) Chris Carters on the major league roster.

by Gina on Aug 25, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chris Carter

"Extremely intelligent, Carter is a real student of hitting, and has demonstrated success with the bat at every level. Excellent power with the potential for more. Hits for average and consistently gets on base at a very good clip. Hits lefties and righties well. Below average speed. In the field, Carter has spent much of his career at 1B but was moved to the outfield in 2008. He has always been known as a poor fielder, and still doesn’t look particularly comfortable at any position. He has focused on his glove and footwork and has improved slightly, but still not enough."

Great, so we have a PhD, who can’t field a lick, can’t run a lick, and hits .280 at AAA, which is about .240 at this level.

He'll fit right in.

We’re amassing 4A players. Or maybe this is the first step in rebuilding Buffalo’s roster.

by Mex_17 on Aug 25, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we have so many 4A players. why is Buffalo so bad?

I thought so

until our AAAA players proved there was definitely a lesser end of AAAA talent.

AAAA guys are usually good minor leaguers that struggle in the majors.

Most of the guys we’ve used suck in the minors.

Probably because our guys in AAA are AA players

And all the AAA and AAAA players are up with the Mets.

See: Reyes, Argenis; Ambres, Chip; Figueroa, Nelson; Takahashi, Ken.

I agree..

What the heck, it’s a new face. I’ll root for him to do well. If he sucks, oh well.

from NY Post twitter

I can’t get the link, but here’s the quote

Jerry Manuel said he doesn’t expect Oliver Perez to make his next scheduled start Friday at the Cubs. Pat Misch is being considered.

Excellent
Rotation: Figgy, Pelf, Redding, Misch, Parnell

the nats are better than us right now

they have a much better offense
Willingham, Dunn, Zimmerman vs Murphy, Tatis and Francoeur

as if having Perez in the rotation makes it better.

Except we'd have gone safe with the draft picks, and ended up with a younger, less developed Chris Carter.

Yeah

Hopefully, with or top pick next year we take a top 5 talent that falls because of signability and gets paid over slot, like Pelfrey ,and Matzek this year (not that we can’t get a top 5 pick the easy way with this roster). If we do that, no way they would go high-price high-reward with other first round/sandwich picks.

All right maybe I am missing something with the Carter bashing...

His AAA stats are not awful and it seems to me the only reason why he was not given a long look at the MLB level ( you know, more than 26 PAs) was he was blocked by mostly Youk and Papi, and, to a lesser extent, LaRoche and Kotchman. While I agree I’d rather have the two high picks, this is not exactly the worst move Omar’s made.

Unless I am misreading his page on fangraphs…

Just know, if there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
