Matt Murton DFA'd by the Rockies
James Edit: The Mets should certainly try to pick him up. He would likely be a league average hitter and is strong defensively. For more on Murton, read Dave Cameron and Ted Berg (scroll to the bottom).

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
GO FOR IT OMAH
Give us something to be happy about! I want to root for Murton and Carter next year.
Do it, Omar!
Please, give us some small thing to cheer about this week.

We found out today that we don't have to see Ollie again this year.
I cheered when I found that out.

Holy crap!
Where did that come from, and how can it be turned into a limited edition Mets t-shirt?
Wait, nuts to that. This picture needs to be on the side of a limited edition Mets van.

I googled Matt Murton
and that image was one of the first ones to come up, and of course it’s from Bleeding Cubby Blue. I thought it was the most fantastic thing I’d ever seen
I've used a bit of Photoshop for things I made
like Don’t Mess With The Johan and this classic:

The difference is I suck at it.
its ok, i do my picture editing primarily in powerpoint
hence the .. quality…

he's going to triple-A Colorado Springs

no.
“Murton has to go through a 48-hour procedural window to clear waivers, given his status as a player with three years or more on a big league roster”

well the byline says

this is going to be one of those things
where i get excited about the prospects of getting him, talk myself into the fact that surely the mets aren’t stupid enough to pass him by,
and then, well, you know…
have them pass on him so gary sheffield and cory sullivan can get more of a looksy

I always liked Muton
He was a good player in the FSL when he came through. Not too much power for a corner OF, but runs well, good D, a bit of pop, gap power, solid all around player for LF. Career .345 wOBA in MLB at this point. Always hit for decent average. Might not be any better than Pagan right now, but shouldn’t really be any worse.
And much, much, better than Cory Sullivan.
and much better than francoeur
and he’ll cost a fraction.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 26, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Sounds like he wants to stay in Colorado
“I know I’m capable of competing at this level,” Murton said. “I’ve done it in the past. I was a part of a [Cubs] club in 2007 that made a run for the pennant and actually won the division. I preface it with that because it’s special to be around a team that has a chance to win a division, has a chance to make the playoffs. So when I found out that I had the opportunity to come back and play, I was really looking forward to relishing that opportunity to come in here. These guys have been playing great ball, and I want to try to do anything I can to add to what they have. I’m out of here now, but hopefully I’ll be back in September.”

This would be a completely logical move for the Mets and actually give me something to root for throughout the next month
Therefore, it has absolutely no chance of hell in happening, because as I’ve come to learn, Omar doesn’t like making moves that improve the organization, but rather, stun people with incredibly illogical and stupid moves.
it's amazing
they’re going to penny pinch next year, yet still pay francoeur 5 million dollars.
god dammit i’m going to lose it.

He's hitting .310/,337/.516 as a Met which isn't bad at all
But I suppose you have a cheaper, more productive option for RF next year???
Matt Murton
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
How much you wanna bet he hits more than .310/.337/.516 next year?
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
And it's also amazing how he's hitting .310
but still has a terrible on base percentage.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I never said he would
I’m just someone who isn’t completely opposed to seeing him brought back next year, because one, the RF FA options are horrible, and two, he hasn’t completely sucked like I thought he would
His offense has been fine since soming to the Mets
but his defense has been terrible. Small sample size for both though.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
except
his defense has been bad for years.
and so has his offense.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions
His defense has beend bad for years? More like in 2008 and as a Met
So again, I ask… who would you bring in for RF for 2010??
bias?
he fucking sucks.
oh wow, he had a 6 week hot streak, that isn’t even that hot.
sign me up!
unless you’re accusing me of being biased against shitty baseball players, in which case, yes, i hate him.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Perhaps it is a 6 week hot streak...
It’s definitely plausible, and more likely than not, accurate
The RF free agent options are:
Bobby Abreu
Expensive DHs in Vlad and Dye
Horse manure
The only plausible option there is Abreu, and he might get resigned
Would it really be that horrible to see if Francouer could put up at least league average numbers next year?
5 million bucks
for league average upside?
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions
No it wouldn't
but to presuppose he would put up league average numbers is nuts.
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
The problem isn't that Franceour isn't a viable option
It’s that he would cost 5 million. I’d rather pay 1 million to keep sending Sheffield out there.
It's biased to dislike a player because he's one of the worst players in baseball?
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
When he had his great defensive year
it was entirely because of his arm. Literally 95% of his defensive value in 07 came from his arm, and his defense suffers greatly without it. And again Matt Murton would be a better option in right
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
yes
you know what could actually be pretty god damned good?
a murton/carter platoon in LF.
that would be something somebody smart would do.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Thanks to plenty of alcohol and lsd
I’m still hoping the Rays aren’t gonna pick up Crawford’s option.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
No way he gets $5 million
You think he sucks, but you assume a panel of arbitrators will be convinced he’s one of the best young players in baseball? You really think they don’t look at the same evidence you do?
He’ll get a fraction (maybe half) of his value in his second arbitration year, same as just about anyone else in their second arbitration year.
by acerimusdux on Aug 27, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Because the arbitration system is stupid?
He got 3.375mil this past offseason (meeting halfway) after having a terrible year and never really ever having any truly good years.
These are the factors:
(1) the player’s contribution to the club in terms of performance and leadership;
(2) the club’s record and its attendance;
(3) any and all of the player’s "special accomplishments," including All-Star game appearances, awards won, and postseason performance;
(4) the salaries of comparable players in the player’s service-time class and, for players with less than five years of service, the class one year ahead of him.
Also, I highly doubt they look at WAR, or wOBA for their stats, its probably more like RBI and BA.
That wasn't an award
He got that because the Braves were stupid, and probably because they didn’t want to go to arbitration after having sold this kid in their media for years as “their David Wright”. He was also only 1 year removed from a strong season. Now he has 2 full years of suck on his resume. Over Francoeur’s first 2.5 seasons, he rung up 7.6 WAR, before the age of 24. I have no idea whether they’ll look at WAR or not, but whatever they looked at, that would have had some influence. He had only 1 down year at that point. His value has clearly not increased in the last year.
At this stage runnning down those criteria:
1. He makes no significant contribution to the Mets in terms of leadership. He is not being helod out here as the future face of the franchise. And his contribution in performance hasn’t been anything significant for 2 years.
2. The club’s record since he’s been here sucks as well.
3. He doesn’t have that much in special accomplishments or awards. He did win a gold glove in 2007, and was 3rd in the ROY voting in 2005, but nothing since then. It’s not like he’s getting votes for the All-Star game.
4. Almost none of those comparable service time players get $5M. Much better players than Francoeur usually get less.
And while they may not be so sophisticated as to use WAR, measures like OPS and runs created have been around for a generation and are pretty mainstream by now and won’t produce too much different a result. I doubt they are that incompetent when it comes to measuring performance.
A year ago, it might have reasonably been argued that Francoeur was on average a 3.0 WAR player prior to 2008, and simply had an off year. At this point, any reasonable person is going to weigh heavily the most recent two years performance and not value him at more than about a 1.0 WAR player. There won’t be too much difference in that even if they do use other performance measures.
Take a look at actual awards and settlements last year:

NYBD had that bogus Reed-for-Murton swap on July 31
If there was any shred of truth to that, the Mets would claim him. But it’s NYBD, so it was probably wild speculation.
Washington, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Arizona and Cincinnati are the only teams with waiver priority over the Mets. If he’s not claimed by anyone of those teams and doesn’t end up a Mets, that’s a disgrace.
so you're saying he won't end up as a Met
omar digs disgrace (at least disgrace to us)

a quote i like
whatever your political slant is, here’s a quote from paulson saying that bernanke would’ve been well within his rights to fire ken lewis if he didn’t absord merrill, because it would’ve shown such lack of judgment that there was no way he could be qualified to run boa:
“He added that it would be “unthinkable” for BoA to walk away – a step he described as “destructive action for which there was no reasonable legal basis and which would show a lack of judgment”."
anyway, if omar passes on murton and then brings francoeur back, it will show that he has no idea what the fuck he’s doing, and he should be shit canned for it.
and i’m usually an omar backer.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:19 AM EDT reply actions
Even if he gets Murton
but still gives Francoeur a new contract I don’t think he has any idea what he’s doing.
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
...
yea that’s true.
any scenario in which francouer is our RFer next year probably means omar should be fired.
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah.... except when you consider there are no good free agent rightfielders
and the fact that we’re not in a position to trade for a RF
so that means
we should burn 5 million dollars on hot garbage?
by firejerrymanuel on Aug 27, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions
The Wilpons
Only get cheap at the wrong times. Omar will tender Francouer and then make a “bird in hand” analogy.
by DannyMetsGeek on Aug 27, 2009 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah its odd
we wont give 14 million to a player who deserves it, but will spread 20 million to multiple players who add up to crap.
I fear the same thing
Honestly what team is going to swoop in and sign Francoeur out from under us if we did non-tender him? I wouldn’t mind bringing him back for say, 2.5-3mil, but not 5mil.
You have to love this Matt Cerrone Quote on the subject
-in the context of the Mets claiming Murton
he’s better than Ryan Church, and probably better than Jeff Francoeur, because of his plate discipline
Is he really insinuating Francoeur is better than Church?? Also, if there is one glaring area Murton is better its his defense.
Going forward maybe
Church has had the better career so far, but is in decline. Church is 31 (in 6 weeks), Murton 28 (in 4 weeks) and Francoeur 26 (in January). Church has been slightly better for his career, but has fallen off the last couple of years.
For their careers
WAR/150g:
2.4 Church
1.7 Murton
1.3 Francoeur
You also have to realize the per 150 game numbers for both Church and Murton are bosted by being used more as platoon guys, while Francoeur has played everyday. Murton for example has 36% of PA vs. LHP, while Francoeur only has 28.8%. And it’s not just the splits, some guys wear down being played everyday.
Still, I think Church is currently a very slightly better player than Francoeur, and Murton is currently better than either. But I might still take Francoeur over Church heading into next season, as a reasonable gamble on more upside for the younger player with more power.
